A new season, a new formation
Ernesto Valverde is reportedly planning a new tactical system for the new season and wants to revert back to a 4-3-3 formation.
The Barcelona boss predominantly played a 4-4-2 last season as the club won a domestic Double in his first season in charge. It was not wholly popular with supporters who felt the team’s style of play was being compromised under Valverde despite the good results.
However, according to Sport he’s intent on returning to a 4-3-3 with Philippe Coutinho set to play a major role in his first full season with the club.
The versatility of the Brazilian means he can play either as part of the front three with Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi, or in the midfield with Sergio Busquets and Ivan Rakitic.
How Barcelona will line up in midfield next season is also dependent on whether the club manage to bring in any more signings in the transfer window.
Arthur has already arrived from Gremio, but the 21-year-old will not be expected to go straight into the team. The Brazilian looks to have an exciting future ahead of him but needs to learn to adapt to life in a new country and at a new club.
Much may also depend on which players stay at the Camp Nou. Paulinho has already departed, Andres Gomes is expected to leave while Denis Suarez may stay.
Carles Alena will also hopefully be an option this season once he recovers fully from surgery.
The club are also looking to bring in another midfielder with Frenkie de Jong or Adrien Rabiot looking the most likely. If one were to arrive it could be that Coutinho plays further forward more often.
