Brazil 1-2 Belgium: Knocked out

The Selecao had their chances but go out

Brazil were knocked out of the World Cup on Friday after being beaten 2-1 by Belgium. It’s another big shock as the Selecao were the tournament favourites and now the World Cup really is up for grabs.

FIRST HALF

Brazil went closest in the early exchanges and hit the post after just eight minutes through Thiago Silva. The ball hit his thigh and then smacked against the post as Belgium escaped.

But Tite’s men suffered an early blow as a corner hit Fernandinho and flew past Alisson after 13 minutes to hand Belgium the lead.

Brazil almost equalised straightaway but somehow Neymar and Gabriel Jesus could not quite find the right contact and the Red Devils cleared.

And then it got a whole lot worse as Belgium doubled their lead just after the half-hour mark with a quick counter-attack. Romelu Lukaku turned and raced forwards before feeding De Bruyne who fired it past Alisson.

Philippe Coutinho went close with a curling shot which Thibaut Courtois saved, but Brazil could not get one back and went into half-time with all sorts of problems.

SECOND HALF

Tite brought on Roberto Firmino at half-time and Douglas Costa arrived as well as Brazil completely bossed the second half.

Chances were few and far between initially apart from a few penalty shouts. One from Neymar which was quite rightly waved away and another from Gabriel Jesus which VAR did not like the look of.

Brazil finally grabbed a goal back when Philippe Coutinho came up with a moment of real quality. He floated a ball in for Renato Augusto who headed past Courtois to give the Selecao hope.

Coutinho then had a brilliant chance to equalise as Neymar picked out his run into the box but he blazed over the bar when he really should have done much better.

Brazil kept pressing and Neymar forced a brilliant save from Courtois in stoppage time, but they could not find an equaliser and their tournament is over. Belgium go through and face a very tasty semi-final against France.
