A cohesive squad is important when it comes to winning trophies in European football. While you can win trophies and many games without being one unit, its a bit more difficult. What Marc-Andre ter Stegen did in Barcelona’s win over Atletico Madrid over the weekend really displayed something interesting about the team.
In the game Barcelona fans began to boo Andre Gomes who, let’s be honest has been less than exceptional during his team at the club, to put it kindly. Ter Stegen took exception to the fans booing Gomes and rightly so.

Booing the lad probably won’t help him, and Ter Stegen knows that. What was neat to see is that Gomes also took the high road on Instagram:
“Thank you cules. Your support makes us invincible! Step by step we get closer to what we want,”
Andre Gomes
After the game Ernesto Valverde sort of defended Gomes, and the fans at the same time.
“The fans have to be conquered,” he said. “The player has to get them on his side.
”I like it when they applaud players if things go wrong, because it strengthens them, but you have to face it and fight to change these things.”

Like a highly trained politician Valverde somehow tried not to offend the fans and defend Gomes, because let’s be transparent, Valverde is probably just as skittish of the fans as the players can be.
