La Liga set to use VAR in 2018/19

VAR looks like it is going to be introduced into the Spanish top flight next season after La Liga released a statement saying it hopes to implement the technology in 2018/19.

La Liga will now begin training match officials on how to use the technology ahead of implementing it in matches from the start of next season.

VAR is already used in the Bundesliga and Serie A and it is expected to be used at the World Cup in Russia this summer also.

The technology has hit the headlines this season for its use in the English FA Cup, where it has made quite an impact, but perhaps not in the way expected.

A prime example is Monday’s FA Cup fifth-round replay between Tottenham and Rochdale which saw a goal disallowed and Son Heung-min’s penaly chalked off as he hesitated in his run-up.

The delays saw six minutes of stoppage time at the end of the first half which led to boos from supporters and manager Mauricio Pochettino branding it “comical” and “embarrassing,”

Clearly VAR still has a long way to go before all the problems are smoothed out and it will be interesting to see how it fares in Spain.

VAR may well have come in handy during Thursday’s draw at Las Palmas when there were a number of controversial decisions, including a handball from goalkeeper Leandro Chichizola and the decision to award Las Palmas a penalty.
