World Cup: Lionel Messi Heroics Save Argentina vs. Iran

Argentina scraped by in what many anticipated as an easy match. With the sides level at 0-0 at the end of 90 minutes, Messi made the difference.

Argentina did not look good. They were sloppy and languid.

Iran were organized and showing belief.

And it almost resulted in a shock - with 90 minutes gone, Iran and Argentina stood on a goalless draw.

You could even say Argentina were fortunate to be in this position. Iran came close to scoring more than once, with GK Sergio Romero having to make important saves.

A side fancied to win the World Cup should not be having these kinds of problems against a minnow like Iran (with all due respect).

But credit where it's due: Iran played a great match. They worked hard for each other. They were intelligent in their positioning, drilled by globetrotting coach Carlos Queiroz.

Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain were off-color. Angel Di Maria, though he showed more spark, was still a long way from his best. And Messi himself was quiet, too isolated and lacking a clear shot at goal.

And yet there it was. Messi found himself with a patch of grass to his own for once. It was injury time and he was outside the penalty box.

With a mighty whack of his magical left leg, he broke 77 million hearts back in Iran. It was another solo effort. His highly-vaunted forward partners had little to do with it.

Argentina are in the knockout stages now, with a 1-0 victory. For the second game in a row, the difference for Argentina was an act of divine inspiration. Against Bosnia, they won 2-1. The first goal from a Messi free kick that resulted in an own goal, the second from a magical Houdini-like escape of a dribble and a cannon of a shot.

Argentina in general made too many simple mistakes. They lacked real conviction. They perhaps lacked a good gameplan. The few times Argentina were able to counterattack, they looked menacing. But against opposition that sat deep, they looked out of ideas.

It's worrying, to be sure, when seeing much more complete opposition such as Germany and France play. But if Argentina's defense can hold up - and it will be crucial if Romero continues in a good vein of form - they will always have their #10 card in the backpocket. And this one's better than an ace.

FIFA World Cup: 21 June 2014; Live Thread

Live thread for the World Cup matches played on the tenth day of the 2014 World Cup

This preview is going to be short as the day has only just begun (I wrote this in the morning) and I'm already late...

Some very exciting football was played yesterday, highlighted by a goal-fast between France and Switzerland while Costa Rica shocked the world once again, recording their second win in as many matches, beating Italy 1-0 and securing a place in the next round, eliminating England in the process.

Argentina vs Iran, Kickoff: 6pm CET

After two days of World Cup football without Barcelona involvement, two Barça players will be in the thick of it today, Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano, with Mascherano expected to earn his 100th international appearance. Argentina should really have little to no problems with this Iran side, but if the 2014 World Cup has taught us anything it is that at no point you can rule out the underdog.

Germany vs Ghana, Kickoff: 9pm CET

With the way Germany demolished Portugal a few days ago they are going to be considered heavy favorites in just about every match and that is very true for this match. Ghana have a solid team, but it's unlikely they will be able to match Germany's talent. This match could offer something never seen before as two brothers, Jérôme and Kevin-Prince Boateng, could play against each other for the second time in a World Cup.

Nigeria vs Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kickoff: 0am CET

The winner of this match is very likely going to be advancing out of the group stage into the knockout round so expect a hard fought game. The Bosnian side is considered heavy favorites, but Nigeria are no pushovers and with their style of football they can be a very difficult team to play against. But Bosnia can't afford to lose as they will be, coupled with an Argentina win, already eliminated.

That's the schedule for today, enjoy!

Barca Stars To Finally Get Silverware in Rio

Special guest author David Donaldson shares his thoughts on Argentina's World Cup dreams as Barcelona stars Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano set their sights on the Jules Rimet Trophy

The necks of Javier Mascherano and Lionel Messi will be feeling unusually light after a trophyless season at Barca this season. Losing is a feeling they’re not used to. And it’s a feeling they certainly won’t be enjoying.

So it’s just as well the World Cup is here – and Argentina have got off to a flyer.

The South American side opened up their Group F account with a 2-1 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina in Rio de Janeiro, with Leo Messi being the star pe rformer.

There’s been a lot of pressure heaped on the superstar in the run up to the tournament with even the likes of Fabio Cannavaro stating he can’t be considered better than Maradona until he has won the Jules Rimet.

And this year could be the one. The Argentina World Cup odds are looking good this summer, with only the hosts fancied higher. Of course, a strong Messi performance will go a long way to sealing that. He’s proved for Barcelona time and time again one moment of magic from the 26-year-old can turn a game on its head.

And it’ll be a familiar set-up for Messi with the strength of teammate Mascherano sitting behind him giving the little wizard license to thrill.

He’s proved that so far scoring a superb individual effort to finish the Bosnian’s off, whilst Mascherano almost broke the deadlock early on to kick start La Albiceleste’s campaign with a bang. That bang wasn’t needed and with perhaps the trickiest tie in the group out of the way, they can go into the game against Iran on Saturday confident on qualification, giving them a bit of respite next week when they take on Nigeria.

The Second Round might not look too bad either, with the likely draw being the Swiss who only just managed to see off Ecuador in the final minutes of their first group game. Alejandro Sabella will certainly be planned for beyond that stage.

It’s an important tournament for Mascherano and Messi, with it probably being the former’s last World Cup. And for Messi, well he needs to prove himself as the world’s greatest – especially since losing the Ballon d’Or to Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi only has two World Cup goals to his name, and has been regarded as somewhat of a flop despite a decent 2010, where he picked up the Man of the Match against Greece. He’s seemingly become a victim of his own standards, with a lack of goals snatching his legendary title away from him.

Brazil 2014 has already started differently for him though. He’s scored a typically Messi goal, and alongside an in-form Gonzalo Higuain – who the Argentine captain would like to see join him at Barcelona – the goals could keep coming.

There’s certainly an air of optimism this competition under Sabella. In 2010 the likes of Jonas Gutierrez was preferred to Pablo Zabaleta, while Sergio Aguero and Angel Di Maria are taking the side to another level.

Will they be walking out into the Maracana on July 13th? You can probably count on it.

Report: Xavi Hernández leaving FC Barcelona for Qatar

According to a report from Ràdio Barcelona, Xavi Hernández already has an offer on the table. He has decided to leave and it's just a matter of time for this to be official

It's hard for us to digest it, but one of the greatest eras in FC Barcelona history is getting close to an end. Xavi Hernández has decided to leave Barça after two decades as a Blaugrana, and already has a chosen destination.

It's Qatar, according to reports from Ràdio Barcelona this Friday. It's said that it is just a matter of time for the move to be official, but Xavi has indeed made up his mind and is not going to be at Barça anymore. He has reportedly informed his closest friends, his teammates and the higher-ups in the club -- including manager Luis Enrique -- about his choice, and now he is going to analyze the offers and make a decision about which team he'll play for in Qatar.

The report also says that Xavi has received the offer directly from the Qatar government, since they want the 34-year-old midfielder to be a part of the country's preparations for the 2022 World Cup, which is going to be played there -- at least for now, or until FIFA decides to do something about the alleged schemes that included bribery from the Qatari officials to the people who voted to decide the location of the '22 tournament.

The government wants Xavi to be not only a player, but a catalyst for the evolution of football in the peninsula. That includes the young players, who play in the Aspire Academy. If he accepts the offer, Xavi is going to coach that team, and bring people from outside of Qatar to help the players to improve physical and technical skills. The actual football league in Qatar lasts only six months, and Xavi would spend a part of his vacation months to coach the youngsters.

Xavi is also set to make 8 million dollars a season, according to the report, no matter which team he chooses. There are two current options: Al Arabi, the government team, or Al Sadd, perhaps the most succesful club in the country, winner of 64 total titles, including a record 13 Qatari League championships.

The Barça legend was just eliminated from the World Cup with Spain, and they're expected to come back home next week. If that happens, we could have official word on Xavi's departure.

As of right now, we can just thank him for everything.

FIFA World Cup: 20 June 2014: Live Thread

Live thread for the World Cup matches played on the ninth day of the 2014 World Cup

Another day, another disappointing England defeat. You’d think that I would be used to it by now – and indeed I am – seeing reported Barcelona target Luis Suarez single-handedly see off Roy Hodgson’s side really was par for the course. It leaves England on the brink of elimination, as they hold out hope for a miracle. They’re probably the only ones though.

Unfortunately, there’s no Barcelona representation on show today – but there are a few interesting games nonetheless. Italy take on one of the surprise packages of the tournament so far, Costa Rica, as they look to maintain their 100% record. France will be hoping to build on their impressive win over Honduras with a victory against tougher opposition in Switzerland. Then we have Honduras facing off against Ecuador. That one doesn’t really sound encouraging, but given that it’s Honduras, we can at least expect some gratuitous violence.

Let’s take a closer look at each game:

Italy vs Costa Rica, Kickoff: 6pm CET

True to form, Italy dismissed their mediocre results in the build-up to the tournament to defeat England in their opening game, controlling the midfield in a 2-1 win. Costa Rica on the other hand shocked the world to upset Uruguay and top the group after a two-goal win. Now, the two teams will square off against each other hoping to move one step closer to qualification. Only a fool would bet against Italy, but lightning might just strike twice for Joel Campbell and Costa Rica if complacency sets in…

France vs Switzerland, Kickoff: 9pm CET

France’s opening game was devoid of drama, purely because Honduras were predictably terrible and capitulated under pressure. Switzerland on the other hand provided us with arguably the most dramatic moment of the tournament so far with their injury-time winner against a plucky performance from underdogs, Ecuador. Will we see excitement in Salvador? Tune in to find out.

Ecuador vs Honduras, Kickoff: 0am CET

Honduras are terrible and boring. Ecuador are mediocre and struggle for goals. This has all the ingredients of another bore draw – so I’m going to ignore the game and make a tenuous link to Barcelona to justify this paragraph. Tonight, Ecuador and Honduras square off in Coritiba – that’s the club that we bought Keirrison from; how fitting that the former and current home of a disappointment would host what should be a disappointing game.

Enjoy the matches!
