So this has become a right old mess...

Barcelona can never seem to do things the easy way and it appears the club’s desire to bring in Xavi as coach isn’t quite as straightforward as it seemed when Al Sadd announced on Friday morning they had agreed to let Xavi go home to the Camp Nou.

The Qatari side released a statement on social media which claimed Barca had paid Xavi’s release clause of €5 million but it seems that may not be the case after all.

The Catalan giants reportedly don’t want to play the clause at all and are pretty hacked off by Al Sadd’s statement, according to Mundo Deportivo.

There’s also an update from Diario Sport that claims Barca can’t pay the release clause for financial fair play reasons. The Catalans are therefore still trying to find a way out of this latest mess which is why they haven’t announced Xavi as coach yet.

For now it seems there’s no danger of Xavi not being granted his wish and moving back to Barcelona but negotiations will have to continue and an agreement reached if the Catalans don’t stump up the cash required.

There has been speculation that Xavi could pay the clause out of his pocket, although those rumors have been just as quickly dismissed.

Barcelona still seem to be optimistic that they can finally announce Xavi as the club’s new manager today, but it seems we may have to wait a bit longer to hear the official word from the club.
