The Spanish side used his criticism as motivation
Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong may have inadvertently played a role in former team Ajax’s Europa League exit at the hands of Getafe on Thursday.
The Dutch champions won the second leg 2-1 in Amsterdam but went out 3-2 on aggregate, with Getafe reportedly using criticism from De Jong as motivation.
The Barca midfielder was critical of Getafe after their 3-0 first leg win and said: “The match between Getafe and Ajax was painful. For me, it was especially frustrating. Getafe does not play to entertain the crowd. I find it annoying to watch their games.”
A picture of De Jong with those comments printed out was found in the Getafe dressing room after the match, according to Voetbal Primeur:

An ill-tempered tie saw Getafe boss Jose Bordalas hit back at the team’s critics after the match saying: “We hit the woodwork three times, we scored and had a goal ruled out. If that’s a defensive team then I don’t know what football is.”
Getafe have been drawn to face Inter Milan in the last 16.
