From the chosen one to no one
Denis Suárez used to be a hot topic. About a year ago the fans were asking why he was left out of the squad so often. He had come off a run of good performances, notably scoring an equalizer off the bench in a 2-1 win over Getafe. The fans wanted him to get more time. How can a player this good not be playing more?
Fast forward a year, and he’s playing even less, except this time the fans don’t really care. They do want Ernesto Valverde to make changes, but not in favor of Denis.
The 24-year-old recovered from an injury last month but he is not being selected even for the bench. He’s yet to feature this season at all.
The player has told media repeatedly he intends to try his best to break into the team. But while he has shown flashes of brilliance, they have just been that - flashes. He’s good enough, given his successful loan spells, to play for good La Liga teams. But is he good enough to play for Barça?
Given his age, we really should have an answer very soon as we can no longer consider him simply a prospect. It’s time to put up or shut up.
We saw another Barcelona player, Paco Alcácer, explode when given regular playing time and a different system to operate in. Denis could be the same. It’s going to come to the point that he will want to leave to finally get a chance to play and prove himself.
