The Barcelona captain is currently on a break from international duty
Former Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli reckons that Lionel Messi and Argentina can win World Cup 2022 but admits plenty will need to change with the national team
Messi is currently taking time out from La Albiceleste after a tough time at the World Cup in Russia, and it’s unclear when he’ll return to the international scene.
Sampaoli left his post after last summer’s tournament but says Messi and Argentina could be crowned world champions in Qatar.
“Of course yes, but this needs a process, for everything that has happened up to now and you don’t break the process; you correct it.
“For the next World Cup or Copa America you need organisation, unlimited confidence and knowing that everything requires a process.
“If you don’t win the Copa America, you have to keep the process, not break it. Enough of this madness that if you do not ‘win’, ‘you’ are a loser. It’s not like that: if you believe, you can win even later. But you have to believe.”

Messi will be 35 when the next World Cup swings around. He’s so far not spoken about his international plans, although Ernesto Valverde has said he thinks he will play for Argentina again.
