Barca and Man City clash in De Jong transfer - report

Both clubs are keen on the midfielder

Barcelona and Manchester City are going against one another in the battle to sign Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt, the Ajax duo who have captured the attention as big clubs around the world prepare for the future.

According to Goal’s Sam Lee, the 21-year-old was reportedly most in favor of heading to Barcelona to pair with Lionel Messi, but in recent weeks Manchester City have made a comeback in the race.

The Citizens comeback appears to be linked to the travel and effort of sporting director Txiki Begiristain. He’s gone to visit De Jong and Ajax multiple times and has closed the at one time wide gap between City and Barcelona.

De Jong is saying all the right things at the moment: “For the moment I’m staying at Ajax, at least another year and maybe two or three more, I’m really enjoying it here.”

The transfer could come to a conclusion this January, it remains to be seen which side will put forward the final effort that gets a deal over the line.
