The veteran fullback could replace Aleix Vidal
La Gazzetta dello Sport is reporting that Stephan Lichtsteiner could be joining Barcelona. This rumor has been talked about for a while now, and the fact that it is still in the news as the winter transfer window beckons could be a portent for a coming deal.
Lichtsteiner, 32, has lost the starting job at Juventus, where former Barcelona man Dani Alves is now the starter. Not only that, but Juan Cuadrado can play in his spot, meaning he could be absent even more. The Swiss was not included in the Champions League squad, and while he is making regular appearances in the league as part of the rotation, he surely would like to go to a place where he is appreciated more.
His contract is up soon, so Barcelona could get him at a knock-down price, while Juventus could at least salvage some money out of him, rather than let him go for free.
Aleix Vidal looks completely out of the picture for Barcelona, meaning only Sergi Roberto is trusted to play right-back. An injury to him could be catastrophic, and even replacing him to give him a rest can cause a headache. A backup RB would be quite useful, and who knows, Lichtsteiner could even challenge Roberto, or at least free him up to play in midfield if needed.
The deal may hinge on Juve first acquiring Milan's Mattia De Sciglio. Some fans will probably lament Juve getting the younger option while Barcelona get the 32-year-old, but cost is likely to be a huge factor in that decision, if it indeed goes that way.
