Report: Barcelona miss out on transfer target as Manchester City agree deal for Athletic Bilbao defender

Barcelona is set to miss out on one of their biggest targets.

According to a report from Basque Country outlet ETB, Athletic Bilbao and Manchester City have agreed a deal for Aymeric Laporte, one of the best young defenders in football. City will pay the €50 million release clause, and the Frenchman will join the Citizens on a five-year deal this summer.

The outlet is known for pretty accurate information when it comes to the Basque teams, mainly Real Sociedad and Athletic. They've broken news like Antoine Griezmann's move from Sociedad to Atlético Madrid and Raúl García, who left Atlético to join Bilbao this season, just to mention some of the most recent reports. ETB claims that Bilbao's coach Ernesto Valverde and the club president have agreed with the move, and the player is keen on leaving.

Laporte was Barça's main target for the summer transfer window, but decided to give up on the signing when the 21-year-old broke his leg during international duty, and is not expected to return to action until late August. The Catalan giants want to sign a healthy player to train and play in the entire preseason, switching their attention to Paris Saint-Germain's Marquinhos.

But if the Marquinhos deal doesn't work, then they're not getting Laporte.
