Barcelona vs Celta Vigo: Pick the Lineup

It's time to play Lucho again!

After the painful loss to Real Madrid, Barcelona won their first trophy in fourteen months, beating Espanyol in penalty-kicks to win the Catalunya Super Cup. Now, it's time to retain the status of La Liga leaders, when the Blaugrana welcome Celta Vigo to Camp Nou on Saturday, eager to return to the winning ways in domestic competition.

For Barça coach Luis Enrique, it's an interesting match, since Lucho will face the team that got him into coaching Barcelona. After a very good season in charge of Celta, Enrique got the job as the Blaugrana boss. He still has a lot of friends there, so expect a friendly atmosphere for the game tomorrow.

It's time now for you to play Lucho (as Barça manager, don't forget about it) an select the lineup the boss should field on Saturday. It's simple: please fill out the attached form below and name the eleven guys YOU want to see starting the game, as well as the seven bench players. You can also use the comment section below to state why you selected a specific lineup, so we can have a nice conversation. Have fun!

FC Barcelona News: 31 October 2014; Barça Continue Preparations for Celta Vigo, Joan Laporta Considers Return

FC Barcelona have sights set on Celta | FC Barcelona

Barcelona's academy is about to face its most rigorous test. The transfer ban imposed on the club until January 2016 means that in the immediate future, reinforcements must come from within rather than signed from outside. While the Blaugrana have an undeniably exceptional record of promoting youth, they are now forced to do so as a rule rather than through choice -- risking the possibility of moving players up a grade to soon.

FC Barcelona win Catalan Super Cup (1-1, 4-2 on pens) | FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona won the first ever edition of the Catalan Super Cup at the Estadi Montilivi in Girona this evening after the game with RCD Espanyol ended 1-1 after 90 minutes. Luis Enrique’s side dominated from start to finish but were unable to add to a Gerard Piqué header after 15 minutes. Espanyol pulled back through Arbilla shortly after the break, and with no further scoring the game went to penalties. The shootout went Barça’s way, as it also had against the same side in the last two finals of the Copa Catalunya.

Due to problems finding room in the fixture list for the tournament, the Catalan Football Federation (FCF) decided to change the format of the Copa Catalunya, so that first division clubs FC Barcelona and Espanyol meet in this one-off game for the Super Cup title, while teams in the second and third division (and the winners of the Catalan First Division) contest the old trophy. There is also a Copa Catalunya Amateur for teams playing in the lower leagues.

Catalunya Super Cup: FC Barcelona vs RCD Espanyol: Full Match Coverage

Wanna win a title? Yeah, we do too!

Barcelona have a title match in front of them today. It's not the biggest of title matches, but hey, I'd like to win a title after losing to Madrid in El Clásico.

Anyway, Barça plays Espanyol in the new Catalunya Super Cup, a trophy added to the already traditional Catalunya Cup. It's the biggest Catalan derby, and it's always nice to beat Espanyol. For this year's edition, the opponents urged the Blaugrana to use at least a few first team players. They vowed not to participate unless Barça used first team players, not the Barça B squad that participated in the last few editions.

Coach Luis Enrique has answered the call, selecting thirteen first team players for the game. Only seven B-teamers are named for the squad, a considerable change compared to the previous selections.

Because it's not exactly a huge game, Enrique decided to rest the most important players from the usual starting eleven. Claudio Bravo, Javier Mascherano, Dani Alves, Sergio Busquets, Neymar and Messi have been awarded a day off. Andrés Iniesta, Douglas and Thomas Vermaelen are nursing injuries, and also out of the game.

These are the twenty players called up by Lucho:

Goalkeepers: Ter Stegen, Jordi Masip

Defenders: Martín Montoya, Gerard Piqué, Marc Bartra, Edgar Ié, Adriano, Jordi Alba, Grimaldo

Midfielders: Sergi Samper, Sergi Roberto, Xavi, Ivan Rakitic, Alen Halilovic, Rafinha Alcântara

Forwards: Pedro, Munir El-Haddadi, Luis Suárez, Adama Traoré, Sandro Ramírez

Expected Starting Lineup (4-3-3):

Masip; Montoya, Bartra, Ié, Adriano; Samper, Rakitic, Halilovic; Rafinha, Suárez, Munir

The game starts at 21:30 CET, and you can follow all the action right here, at BB. Visca el Barça!

Real Madrid 3-1 Barcelona: Tactical Review

Luis Enrique's first Clásico as Barcelona manager ended in embarrassing defeat. Despite the heavy criticism that has come his side's way, it could have been a very different result.

Sometimes in football a few small events make a big difference. Everything can be going very well indeed, then one small mistake leads to a couple of big ones and suddenly a decent performance looks like a dreadful one. Inevitably, the aftermath sees all positive aspects swept under the rug and the negatives are highlighted, exaggerated and used as ammunition against whoever the scapegoats are.

Few games will stand as better examples of this than Saturday’s Clásico. Read almost any newspaper or internet column and you’ll be told that: Barcelona should really have lost 10-0 to Real Madrid; Lionel Messi was invisible; Andrés Iniesta is finished; Luis Enrique is out of his depth, and so on. It’s all exaggerated nonsense.

Of course Barça deserved to lose. They made basic strategic and technical mistakes that would embarrass most amateur footballers and gave themselves a mountain to climb. Having to chase the game, they overcommitted and left themselves open to the counter, allowing Madrid to create even more chances. Had they not repeatedly messed up the final pass, Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and company could have achieved a manita. That wasn’t a real reflection of the contest, however.

The first half was probably Barça’s on balance. Luis Enrique’s narrow 4-3-1-2 system and his surprising selection of Xavi Hernández worked well, allowing Barça to dominate the centre of the pitch and have a majority of ball possession. Sergio Busquets was regularly free to keep the ball moving quickly and he slipped Messi several incisive vertical passes, allowing Messi to turn and drive at Madrid’s defence and combine with Suárez and Neymar, who were moving out to the flanks to play 1v1 against Marcelo and Dani Carvajal.

RMAFCB12

Real Madrid looked vulnerable. Their 4-4-1-1 seemed too reactive, drawing too many attacking players into primarily defensive roles, a problem that has been their Achilles’ heel for years. As expected, they quickly assembled in two banks of four, waited for Barça’s moves to break down and then counter with quick vertical bursts past players who simply couldn’t match their physical capabilities.

Though they played as the reactive side, Carlo Ancelotti was far from doing a Mourinho. Madrid did not park the bus for the entire match. Luka Modrić, Toni Kroos, James Rodríguez and Isco are all excellent footballers at or approaching their peak and their quick, accurate passing and positional interchange gave Barça big problems, especially when Ronaldo and Benzema dropped into midfield and Marcelo and Carvajal came forward on the flanks.

Still, for the majority of the half, Barça were in control. Busquets, Xavi and Iniesta set the tempo, maintained possession, found pockets of space and covered the full-backs. Dani Alves and Jérémy Mathieu ventured forward only sparingly, wary of leaving space behind that Madrid could exploit. Gerard Piqué and Javier Mascherano played sensible passes, finding their more creative teammates in good positions to start moves.

RMAFCB2

Neymar’s goal was excellent, the result of a fine move and an exploitation of a weakness identified by this blog’s Clásico preview: the cross/cutback played in front of Madrid’s back four as it reflexively dropped back into the box, leaving space on the edge. That Messi miss followed another great passing move and cross from the right, and in the 28th minute Neymar had another huge chance after yet another break down that side.

Barça’s problems began when they became broken in defensive phases almost immediately before the penalty award. The defence dropped too far while the strikers pressed high and the midfield was repeatedly caught narrow in between the two lines. Suárez and Neymar rarely tracked Marcelo and Carvajal back and consequently Madrid’s full-backs were always available when Madrid needed a passing option to keep a move going or to change the angle of attack.

Iniesta and Piqué have been criticised for their errors in giving away the penalty, but it would all have been avoided had Barça not been in a very poor defensive shape when Madrid’s attack started, with Carvajal afforded thirty yards of space and all the time in the world to assess his options while carrying the ball forward. Needless to say, if you repeatedly give a side of Madrid’s quality that sort of time and space, even when the ball is with their right-back, keeping them out will be extremely hard.

RMAFCB3

Once Madrid had equalised, everything changed. The home side grew in confidence and half-time seemed to arrive just when Barça needed it. However, it was clear as soon as the second half started that Barça had lost their rhythm and that they were going to find it very hard to cope with a Madrid side that was flying. Xavi and Iniesta seemed flustered and overworked pulling wide, no longer getting forward into central zones to support Barça’s attacks and struggling to get back to cover Madrid’s ferocious advances.

Errors crept into Barça’s game. The focus on Madrid’s second goal will be on the mistakes at the corner that allowed Pepe a free header on goal from eight yards, but origin of the attack that led to the corner itself was more worrying.

Barça seemed to have everything under control in Madrid’s half. Iniesta, Xavi and Messi exchanged passes in front of Modrić and Kroos but found no forward passing options available. They went back to Mascherano, who played an assertive forward pass to Neymar’s feet. Spooked by Carvajal closing from behind and Modrić and Kroos rushing at him in front, Neymar played a careless pass back that Messi and Busquets could have picked up, but both were caught flat-footed and it rolled to Benzema.

Busquets was turned and suddenly, after a one-two with James, Benzema had played in Ronaldo, who was in acres of space. Piqué, Mascherano and Alves were back in covering positions but they were exposed. All involved in the turnover bar Iniesta jogged back or simply stood and watched as Madrid countered. Piqué blocked the shot and it went out for the corner, and the rest is history: horrible marking, a silly attempt by Alves to con the referee into giving a free-kick and a free header for Pepe.

RMAFCB5

What happened next was brutal. Xavi and Iniesta simply couldn’t cope with the physicality of the game – their roles meant that they had to contribute more in attack as well as defence and neither had the stamina or the pace to play wide of Busquets, who was left horribly exposed – and Madrid seized control. Barça suddenly looked one-paced and positionally rigid, their defence was hopelessly exposed and Madrid’s fast and fluid attacks were devastating.

The attitudes of both sides’ forwards to their defensive work contrasted strongly from this point. Messi, Neymar and Suárez did almost nothing in the defensive phase besides showing Madrid’s passes wide, whereas Benzema made sure he always stayed close to Busquets and Ronaldo became a man possessed, dropping into fill gaps in midfield wherever they came up. The counter that led to the third goal after Ivan Rakitić’s disastrous delivery and a huge error by Iniesta came after Ronaldo had blocked a cross by his own corner flag. When Cristiano Ronaldo is outworking your forwards, you’ve got big problems.

Barça’s strategy ended up playing into everything they know Madrid are good at. They dallied in midfield and allowed Madrid to get back into position. They passed the ball to players who didn't want it, inviting Madrid to force errors. They overcommitted even at set-pieces, which is obviously suicidal: countering from opposition corners could hardly be more associated with Madrid and impotency from attacking set-pieces could hardly be more associated with Barça, but still they sent everyone forward and left Busquets and Mascherano back to deal with the inevitable sea of white that flooded towards them immediately afterwards.

Once Madrid were two clear, Barça’s structure deteriorated even further. The strikers became basically unreachable and Messi started playing in front of the defensive lines rather than between them. The midfield had no forward passing options besides the full-backs and the full-backs had no real options besides coming back inside. Barça’s moves went nowhere.

RMAFCB6

Lucho needed to change it with his substitutions but his changes were unlucky or came too late. Rakitić was desperately needed to replace Xavi, but after his corner led to the third goal he was clearly spooked and repeatedly made bad choices. His wide positioning in possession left Busquets exposed at turnovers, and when he came inside to support him, he exposed Alves.

Suárez played well for the first half hour but should arguably have been replaced at half-time. He rolled Sergio Ramos twice in the second half, but neither dribble was in a dangerous position and he was clearly too tired to track Marcelo, who was killing Barça at transitions. Pedro should have come on before it was too late.

Once Iniesta went off injured and Sergi Roberto came on, it was clear that Barça’s race was run and it was all about damage limitation from then on.

Despite the suggestion that there is now a clear gap between Real Madrid and Barcelona, this was a match decided by fine margins. The Messi and Neymar misses at 1-0 would have changed everything – although the same could be said of Benzema hitting the woodwork twice in a few seconds at the same scoreline – while Piqué’s handball for the first Madrid goal, Alves’ gamble that the ref would blow the whistle if he simulated a foul instead of marking for the second and the catalogue of errors led to the third swung the game away from Barça.

That being said, Luis Enrique’s system was again shown to be flawed and the Barça manager has work to do to make sure that other big sides don’t find it so easy to play his side when they’re losing. The front two remain prone to becoming static in central areas and they’re uninvolved in the defensive phase. Put simply, they were hard to find for the midfielders and easy to bypass for the opposition.

Messi is more involved in this system, but his impact is relatively easy to limit. He is repeatedly forced into areas where he can’t play a key pass or take a shot without taking on three or four players every single time he receives the ball and his tendency to come deep to get the ball when things are going badly makes him much less effective.

RMAFCB7

Once they needed to chase the game, Barça’s midfield became unbalanced and impotent. Xavi and Iniesta and then Rakitić and Sergi Roberto were hugely overworked and Busquets went from being composed and influential to exposed and overrun. The latter has been criticised strongly by several writers, but how well is anyone going to do when they’re constantly outnumbered?

It must be reiterated that Barça’s first-half build-up was incisive and effective, but in the second it became convoluted and counterproductive. Instead of supplying the front two and making chances for them to score, the midfield often dragged them out into wide areas, where they too couldn’t attack with any real purpose. With Messi holding back and no runners coming from midfield, Suárez and Neymar had no forward passing options.

RMAFCB8

RMAFCB9

In contrast to Barça’s needlessly complicated system, the beauty of Madrid’s was its balance and simplicity. Kroos and Modric were at the heart of everything, playing with better positional discipline than we have seen them display before for Madrid, while their passing was inevitably near perfect. Isco and James weren’t completely diligent defensively, but they were very energetic and their intelligent running at transitions gave Madrid’s forward bursts structure.

While Ronaldo and Benzema did the most damage, the key men were Marcelo and Carvajal, who were left almost completely unattended and allowed Madrid to keep the pressure on Barça in exactly the manner that Barça failed to do when they needed spare men to keep Madrid pinned back.

RMAFCB10

RMAFCB11

It’s worth stating again that despite the nature of this defeat, it wasn’t a total disaster. Barça aren’t finished and nor are Messi, Iniesta, Busquets and Luis Enrique, as many would have us believe right now. On another day it would have been a very different result, but individual errors put them under pressure and exposed the worst side of Lucho’s tactics. Under those circumstances, a defeat was unavoidable.

La Liga El Clasico: Real Madrid 3-1 FC Barcelona: Player Ratings

A detailed, player-by-player breakdown of Barcelona's gut-wrenching La Liga loss in the El Clasico.

Claudio Bravo
5.9

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 42

Passes: 13

Pass Accuracy: 85 %

Shots Faced: 6

Saves Made: 3

Aerial Duels Won: 1

Bostjan says: 6.5

The streak is over, and it was over in a big way. Bravo was lucky not to give up the first goal of the match in the 10th minute when two Benzema shots hit the frame of the goal. He only saved three of the six Real Madrid shots that were on target, but he had absolutely no chance on any of the three that ended in the back of the net. Still, Bravo was a commanding presence in goal, doing his best to collect all the crosses that were in his reach.

Dani Alves
4.6

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 96

Passes: 67

Pass Accuracy: 98 %

Key Passes: 0

Shots/Shots on Target: 1/1

Tackles: 8

Fouls Won: 1

Clearances: 2

Fouls: 0

Interceptions: 2

Bostjan says: 5.5

Clearly Alves’ focus in this game was defense, but that doesn’t mean he was actually good at his job. Most of Real’s traffic came down his side and Alves could do little to prevent people from getting past him. The Brazilian made a few important plays, but it was far from enough to make the lives of Barcelona’s center-backs and Bravo’s job any easier. In attack he didn’t fare much better, losing the ball too often, and sending crosses into areas where no Barcelona players were located.

Gerard Pique
3.2

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 50

Passes: 37

Pass Accuracy: 92 %

Tackles: 1

Interceptions: 3

Clearances: 5

Aerial Duels Won: 1

Bostjan says: 4.5

I don’t want to talk about Pique. I really don’t. He made a couple of good plays, but there were clearly more bad ones than there were good ones. That’s all I’m going to say.

Javier Mascherano
5.8

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 66

Passes: 85

Pass Accuracy: 94%

Tackles: 4

Interceptions: 4

Clearances: 2

Aerial Duels Won: 0

Fouls: 0

Bostjan says: 6.5

Without Mascherano this game could’ve easily ended much worse for Barcelona, as in 5-1 or 6-1 worse. The Argentine was cleaning up Pique’s messes throughout the game, making tackles, clearances and interceptions all game long. His lack of height and physicality was exposed on Real’s second goal, and the mix up caused by Iniesta in the third goal left Mascherano out of position, but that were about the only two negative plays involving Mascherano.

Jeremy Mathieu
5.3

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 67

Passes: 48

Pass Accuracy: 79%

Shots/Shots on Target: 1/1

Tackles: 3

Interceptions: 1

Clearances: 4

Aerial Duels Won : 0

Key passes: 1

Bostjan says: 6.0

We’ll never know how this game would’ve turned out if Mathieu played at center-back instead of Pique, but Mathieu did his job admirably on the left side of the defense. Defensively he wasn’t tested much, but when he was the results were mostly positive, though, he was beaten on a few of occasions. In attack he wasn’t nearly as dangerous as Jordi Alba has been usually, but he made a couple of good plays. In the first half he created a great scoring chance for Messi that the Argentine squandered, and in the second he fired a booming shot from the left wing that surely would’ve went in off the post had it not been saved by Casillas.

Sergio Busquets

Aerial Duels Won: 0

Inder says: 4.5

A horrid game, period. Sergio Busquets is adding to the theory in the press and amongst certain sections of the fan-base that Mascherano deserves to start as defensive midfielder. Purely on the performances of the two in this game? There can be no argument. Busquets found himself making tackles that were at times, great but mostly a blunder but worse, he then would regularly proceeded to give the ball away. Considering his passing is his "main selling point", today's display was just unacceptable. In the 2nd half, Busquets had the chance to show some leadership, as our 4th captain, and put in a couple of crunching tackles to change the flow of the game, which never happened.

Andres Iniesta
4.6

Minutes played: 71

Touches: 69

Passes: 65

Pass Accuracy: 88 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0

Turnovers: 2

Key Passes: 1

Successful Dribbles: 1

Tackles: 0

Inder says: 5.5

Had a couple of moments where he was in space and couldn't produce the final goods. Picked up a yellow for a foul in the defensive third and was responsible for giving away the ball for Madrid's third. Finally, picked up an injury. As discussed on twitter, one of the many flaws in Barca's game was also the total lack of real pressure from midfield, which added to our defensive woes.

Xavi
4.9

Minutes played: 59

Touches: 59

Passes: 62

Pass Accuracy: 94%

Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0

Fouls Won: 0

Interceptions: 1

Turnovers: 0

Key Passes: 1

Successful Dribbles : 0

Inder says: 6.0

Lucho's first mistake was starting Xavi and that is NOT Xavi's fault. The Barca legend (like his team mates) started the game well and then just disappeared. Worse, he was expected to cover for our full-backs who had a horrid game. This was only going to work if Barca was a well drilled, smooth flowing team and the PSG and Madrid games showed that is not the case. Difficult to really rate Xavi cause he just wasn't visible for the most part.

Luis Suarez
6.3

Minutes played: 68

Touches: 45

Passes: 33

Pass Accuracy: 91%

Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0

Turnovers: 3

Successful Dribbles: 3

Key Passes: 3

Tackles: 1

Fouls: 2

Inder says: 6.5

Great pass to register his first assist in Blaugrana, when he found Neymar who scored. Was quiet otherwise and not on the same wavelength or speed as the other players (which says a lot considering the others were pretty bad as well). That said, it is difficult to judge him since it was his debut.

Lionel Messi
5.0

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 81

Passes: 62

Pass Accuracy: 88%

Shots/Shots on Target: 4/2

Fouls Won: 2

Successful Dribbles: 4

Key Passes: 3

Turnovers: 2

Tackles: 0

Inder says: 6.0

Unfortunately, instead of Messi looking to reach top form at the Clasico, it was the opposite. His finishing deserted him when he missed from a few yards out, what definitely should have been Barca's 2nd goal (which would have made it 2-0 to Barca). Seemed disinterested for the rest of the game, while also picking up a yellow (let's not even start on the referee). Quite frankly, Messi's most disappointing performance this season by a margin. To add to that, most of the players lacked any movement around him and so his passing angles were as invisible as him.

Neymar
6.6

Minutes played: 90

Touches: 64

Passes: 42

Pass Accuracy: 88 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 5/1

Fouls Won: 4

Key Passes: 1

Turnovers: 5

Inder says: 7.0

Did extremely well to wrong foot Carvajal and Pepe before passing the ball into the net out of the reach of Casillas. Did well to get involved in the first half, but found very little space later. Carvajal had Neymar in his pocket for pretty much the whole match with exception of the goal. Picked up a yellow as well

Ivan Rakitić

Minutes played: 31

Touches: 41

Passes: 33

Pass Accuracy: 88 %

Shots/Shots on Target : 2/0

Interceptions : 1

Bostjan says: 6.0

Rakitić’s substitution didn’t have the effect Luis Enrique envisioned. While his passing was mostly on the mark, his crossing from corner kicks was too predictable and usually helped Real Madrid more than it did Barcelona. The Croat will surely not be proud of this cameo.

Pedro4.0

Minutes played: 22

Touches: 13

Passes: 7

Pass Accuracy: 100%

Tackles : 2

Bostjan says: 6.0

Pedro was his usual hard-working self while on the pitch, but it’s a sad day when your right winger has more impact on the defensive side of the game than on the attack. While it’s great that Pedro helps out on defense, don’t get me wrong, it’s about time he starts doing what he’s getting paid for – score goals.

Sergi Roberto
3.7

Minutes played: 19

Touches: 16

Passes: 13

Pass Accuracy: 100 %

Tackles: 1

Bostjan says: N/A

Once again Sergi Roberto was put on the pitch in a lose-lose situation for him. Clearly, his teammates lost just about all the motivation that late in the game, and without a creative midfielder alongside him Roberto can't be as effective. He did well to step on the ball on a couple occasions, but I can’t give him a full grade for his time on the pitch.

The Team4.1

Passes: 624

Pass Accuracy: 90 %

Shots/Shots on Target: 15 /5

Tackles: 23

Aerial Battles Won: 38 %

Fouls Won/Committed: 11 /10

Bostjan says: 5.0

Simply put Barcelona did not perform at a standard needed to win an El Clasico match. The start to the game was brilliant, and the first half as a whole was mostly good, but as the game went on Barcelona’s performance dropped. The defense, save for a couple goal-saving plays was in shambles, the midfield couldn’t control the game, and the forwards were often not on the same page. A showing not worthy of a team like FC Barcelona…

Luis Enrique
3.7

Bostjan says: 5.0

Lucho got a few things wrong in this one, but I still believe the starting line-up wasn’t one of them, though I would've started Rakitić in Xavi's place if you asked me before the match. On paper, playing Mathieu should’ve brought the team more defensive stability, and to an extent it did, but it was the right side that was ran over. The substitutions were questionable, especially the one where Xavi was taken off, but those did not lose Barcelona the game. The game was lost before that, in the first half when Barcelona missed their chances, and I can’t (fully) blame Lucho for what the players failed to accomplish.

MOTM - Neymar
30%

Bostjan says: Mascherano

From the beginning of the voting this was two horse race, and in the end Neymar just edged it, with Javier Mascherano finishing in second place just three percent removed from first. The Barcelona debutant, Suarez, finished on the podium as well with 15% of the votes.

REALity Check: El Clásico Loss a Painful Reminder for Barcelona

A reminder that this is just the beginning and the road to redemption is a long one.

As Barcelona fans, we are used to win. A lot. So any loss is a weird moment, a moment to get mad, anxious and nervous about the future, only to get happy again once the team wins the next match. Victories are almost a certainty, something we've become so accustomed to see over the last decade that we absolutely take it for granted.

So, naturally, losing to your biggest rival is a difficult thing. You hate the team on the other side, and your day is completely ruined after a loss. That's what happened to Barça on Saturday, when the Blaugrana got dominated and destroyed by Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu. After a promising start, the Catalans had no answer to the level of intensity shown by the Blancos, especially in the second half, and saw an early 1-0 lead get shattered by the hosts in a span of 30 minutes. And really, Madrid could have scored a lot more, but ended up wasting many counter-attacking opportunities and weren't able to stretch their lead to a humiliation.

Still, they dominated and totally deserved to triumph. After a sloppy start to the season, trying to fit all the pieces of the complicated puzzle created by the controversial transfer moves made by its president, Real are back on track, and now they're looking even scarier than they already were last season. Even without Gareth Bale, Madrid killed Barça with their ridiculously fast counter-attack, but yesterday they showed one more ace in the hole: the capability of maintain ball possession and create scoring opportunities with accurate passes and killer player movement. Toni Kroos is already a key part of this squad, and his association with Luka Modric have made Madrid's midfield even more dynamic. They control the tempo of the game when the team is on offense, and they have incredible awareness to help each other and cover spaces on defense. In Isco, they have a simpler version of Ángel Di María. The current midfielder is not as talented as his predecessor, but his work-rate and intensity are incredibly helpful.

James Rodríguez has shut up all critics by doing his part to make the team successful. He's not the protagonist some might think he would be, but his contributions have been gigantic. Especially yesterday, James' off-the ball work was sensational, and he played a big part in Karim Benzema scoring the third and final goal of the match.

In essence, Madrid are better than they were last year, and they are ready for the big games. They were the better team on Saturday, and Barça deserved to lose.

Speaking of Barça, the loss in El Clásico served as a painful reminder for the Blaugrana: there's a long way to go in the road to redemption. The team lost the two biggest games of the season so far in an undoubtful manner, and they looked hopeless in both matches. The problem is: Barça had played great in the previous matches, and they always seemed to be ready for the big stage. And then, the bunch of players running around like little kids looked nothing like the efficient, unbeatable team we saw only three or four days before the games against PSG and Madrid.

Something's wrong. Let me rephrase that: some things are wrong. Let me rephrase again: a lot of things go wrong. Everything goes well when Barça face Eibar, Elche, Rayo, Ajax... When the big match atmosphere involves the players and the coach, all of the good things go out the window, and the ugly, repeated mistakes happen, the team looks hilariously lost, and the strongest defense in Spain becomes a Liga Adelante bunch.

One thing is clear: there are two Barcelona teams. The one that can blowout and convince in the easy games, winning the ones they should win. And then there's the team that can compete and cope with the big teams for a portion of the game, only to get exposed and beat at the end. To their credit, the players didn't give up in any of the losses. They fough hard to the final whistle, unfortunately they didn't know what to do because the current scheme doesn't give them alternatives to change things (hold that thought).

That doesn't mean we didn't see good stuff when we lost. Neymar Jr. is CLEARLY adapted to the team, the city and the new life as a backup franchise player. The Brazilian has become an integral part of Barça's system, and his 9 La Liga goals in eight games already match the TOTAL of last season's campaign, when Ney needed twenty-six league contests to bag the same number of scores. Neymar is arguably the best player of the start of the season. He hasn't had a marginal performance yet, and that's huge.

Another plus for Barça in both losses is Javier Mascherano. Personally, I think his season is absurd. Even in the negative results, Masche was the best defensive player of the team by far, even if he was put in a position he shouldn't be playing (hold that thought). Javier has solidified himself as the 12th starter, and Sergio Busquets needs to worry about his previously untouchable spot as defensive midfielder.

In Saturday's loss to Madrid, we witnessed the much anticipated debut of Luis Suárez. Barça's biggest signing of the season was finally able to play, and he started the game, a somewhat surprising decision made by coach Luis Enrique. As expected (at least as I expected), Suárez had a wonderful start, in which he assisted the first goal and later gave Lionel Messi an easy shot that could have changed the story of the game, but Leo wasn't able to score. After this great start, Suárez obviously felt the lack of playing time, got tired, then exhausted, and finally left after 60 minutes, when he was replaced by Pedro. Overall, it was an OK game, though a very promising one. From what we saw, especially in the beginning, the trio of Neymar-Messi-Suárez can be deadly once Luisito is ready, physically and in terms of understanding his teammates, and vice-versa.

After all of that, we have to address the coaching. In both losses (and especially in the Clásico), Luis Enrique deserves a considerable part of the blame. His judgement calls were poor and tactically flawed. In the PSG match, Lucho started Jordi Alba in the left side, and poor Alba was swallowed by Lucas Moura and Van der Wiel with no help from Andrés Iniesta, who failed to fulfill his defensive duties. Also, Enrique used Mascherano as a center-back against a tall opposition, and that choice combined with other individual mistakes led to two Paris goals coming from set pieces.

Against Madrid, Lucho decided to bench Alba and put Jérémy Mathieu as a full-back. That would be a good idea, if Gareth Bale was on the pitch. As you know, he was not. On the other side, Enrique said "screw the defense" and started Ani Alves (yes, it's Ani Alves because there's no D). To make it even worse, the coach decided to have Xavi on the right midfield spot. A wise decision offensively, but terrible in terms of helping the Brazilian fella who doesn't know how to defend. Ivan Rakitic was a better option than Xavi, especially because the focus of Madrid's attack would be the left side, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcelo in great form. The result was a laughable performance by both Xavi and Alves, who got destroyed by their opponents.

And once again, Mascherano played as a center-back. That is not a good idea in a game like this, as the second goal scored by Pepe showed us. On the ground, Masche is a monster. In the air, he's a baby. He simply doesn't have enough height to defend the best aerial challengers of any team, let alone Madrid. That's a fact. And that is something we know since the first game he played as a CB. After all, Javier's ability of being so good in different positions hurts Barcelona. It's not his fault, though. The coach is so blindly confident in Masche being a very good CB that he makes the wrong call by putting the Argentine in a bad spot. It happened with Tito, it happened with Tata, it's happening with Lucho. That's a problem, especially when you have Marc Bartra begging to have a real opportunity to show he is legimately good to be a starting center-back at the club.

The amount of criticism thrown in Lucho's way after the defeat in El Clásico is definitely unfair. He made bad decisions, but most of the players had a really lousy game. Everyone deserves the blame for the result, but a loss this big can also be a very good thing. If you put this in perspective, you can see that Messi won't have a performance that bad again, Dani Alves is leaving soon, Luis Suárez will get better, Neymar is living up to the hype and then some, and more importantly, that this was only the TWELFTH game of a rebuilding season. As bad as losing to Madrid is, this is too early to say that everything is terrible. We have to give this group more time. As talented as this group is, it takes a while to make all those individual stars become a true team.

And hey, we're still La Liga leaders. And the only true big game we have left this calendar year is against PSG, at home, and that happens in more than 40 days. Which means that there's time to make things better, and get this group ready for the next huge test. As painful as losing a Clásico is, losses like that are almost a necessity in a rebuilding season. It makes you think, analyze, plan, change. There are corrections to be made, but only time will make those corrections be effective. It's not the end of the world. In the end, this is just a loss. And if losing in October means winning in May, I'll take losing in October any day.
