Barcelona vs Leicester City, Preseason Friendly: All Updates

Full coverage of Barcelona's second preseason fixture, a showdown with Premier League champions, Leicester City

Following a comfortable victory over Scottish champions, Celtic FC, in their International Champions Cup preseason opener at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday, FC Barcelona will be looking to make it two wins from two tomorrow as they take on Leicester City in Stockholm. The Foxes seemed to captivate the entire footballing world last season with their shock title win, apparently proving that "miracles can happen", even in the modern game.

Their success, we are told, came against all the odds – a real David vs Goliath story as they stood up to the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City, emerging victorious in the process. Some have even gone as far as to claim that it’s the greatest footballing achievement in recent memory – after all, nothing catches the eye quite like sensationalism.

Of course, Leicester City were a very good team last season, and what they achieved was in many ways unprecedented in the Premier League era. Since 1992, very few teams have ever lifted the trophy and for Leicester to add themselves to that list, no-one can deny that this was an incredible accomplishment.

That being said, there was an element perhaps not of fortune and luck, but certainly of opportunism about their success. Their title win came in what could easily be deemed the weakest Premier League of the millennium; Manchester City were out of sorts, Chelsea were in crisis and Arsenal were, well, Arsenal were Arsenal.

Buoyed by a light schedule, Ranieri’s side almost became the best side by default in the sense that it wasn’t solely down to improvement on their part; largely it was actually down to considerable regression from the usual contenders.

It was down to English football’s descent into irrelevance.

Consider that while Leicester were far and away the best and most consistent team in last season’s Premier League, would any football fan now deem them to rank amongst Europe’s elite? Did their title win elevate them to the same level as the other major domestic champions, like Juventus, Paris Saint Germain, Bayern Munich or Barcelona for instance? Certainly not. Would it even place them in a theoretical top ten? Again, there are doubts.

This title win doesn’t appear as though it will serve as a building block to something greater. In spite of being gifted with the significant revenues that comes with being a Premier League club, Leicester have struggled to retain key players, and whether by design or otherwise, they have also struggled to recruit, thereby failing to address the concerns regarding their squad depth.

As the Blaugrana well know, expectations skyrocket after a title win. For Leicester, the expectation is that they deliver on multiple fronts after such a targeted campaign last season and while it is true that preseason results are generally a poor indicator, the signs from the Foxes preseason thus far are far from promising.

I opined that Celtic are a bad football team last week, and the manner in which we brushed them aside both without moving out of second gear, and at a far earlier stage in our comparative preseason preparations validated that suggestion. Yet, in their match against Celtic, Leicester struggled and could only draw.

Next up, they faced their first "real test" as Premier League champions against Paris Saint Germain and they were embarrassed. The same central defensive pairing that inspired the team to the Premier League title were routinely beaten, the midfield that provided such ample cover last season was largely anonymous and Riyad Mahrez aside, the entire team were simply outclassed. By the end of the evening, PSG had run away 4-0 victors and more than anything; it was the manner of the victory that will have left Ranieri feeling dejected.

Preseason by definition may not be competitive, but that’s no excuse for why his players couldn’t turn that fixture into a contest.

And so, we come full circle to focus back on the match ahead; La Liga champions against Premier League champions. The best that Spain has to offer; against the best that England has to offer. For Leicester, it’s a chance at redemption – a chance to prove they belong. For Barcelona? It’s just another game closer to the start of the season.

TEAM NEWS

BARCELONA

For Luis Enrique, tomorrow’s match represents another opportunity to test his squad and experiment with new ideas. On Saturday, we witnessed Juan Camara feature at left-back to good effect, and to the surprise of many, we saw Sergi Roberto once again thrive at pivote. We saw Denis Suarez in midfield and in attack; we saw Arda Turan given more freedom and we saw Munir just about everywhere at one stage or another.

We also saw that the future remains bright; for all the hyperbolic statements about the demise of La Masia, Carles Aleña, Sergi Samper and a whole host of B team players proved otherwise. It’s naive to read too much into a preseason friendly, but to be honest, this is just a continuation of last season – we’re still good at football, and usually much better than our opposition.

There were of course signs that some players were yet to get into their usual groove. Lionel Messi wasn’t weighting his passes quite as perfectly as he usually would, while Luis Suarez was largely anonymous – but it was a step in the right direction for everyone. Another game under our belts, bringing us one step closer to being ready for the real thing starting in a few weeks.

Expect a similar approach from Luis Enrique tomorrow; he has a squad of 21 players at his disposal and we should expect to see them all. That will mean preseason debuts for Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano, and more time for the likes of Aleña and Samper; again starting line-ups are all but irrelevant but we can keep an eye on the key subplots emerging from this preseason.

Firstly, can Aleix Vidal continue to shine at right-back? Against Celtic, the ex-Sevilla star was simply sensational at both ends of the pitch, playing a pivotal role in Arda Turan’s opener and making countless interventions at the back, including a number of well-timed recovery slide challenges. It’s apt that he looks a little thinner on top than I remember, because this was a mature performance from Vidal as he looks to stake his claim for Dani Alves’ vacated starting spot. Another strong performance could see him enhance his chances.

Separately, what about Sergi Roberto? Luis Enrique’s utility man looked excellent in every position on Saturday, but he didn’t feature at all in the one position we were sure was his: right-back. Will Lucho debut Roberto at full-back tomorrow, or does he continue to see Sergi as a solution for a variety of positions?

Then we have Messi and Suarez; they are operating without the third musketeer at the moment, but one would expect them to still be amongst the goals. Leicester may be Premier League champions, but as we know these two are rarely discriminatory about who they score against – could they get off the mark tomorrow with a couple of goals of their own, or will it be the supporting cast who once again provide the killer touch in front of goal?

LEICESTER CITY

Jamie Vardy continues to miss out for Leicester, presumably still recovering from all the effort that was expended in England’s memorable Euro 2016 campaign, but leaving their top-scorer aside, Leicester are all but at full strength. Riyad Mahrez continues to feature despite speculation linking him with a move away, while new big money signings Nampalys Mendy and Ahmed Musa are likely to play some part, starting and off the bench respectively.

MATCH PREDICTION

I called the Celtic scoreline down to a tee; I’m going big and upping the ante to 3-0 this time.

Reports: Barcelona goalkeeper situation complicated after board meetings with Bravo and Ter Stegen

Both want to start, and both might leave

When you have great squad depth in a football team, sometimes there's problems. And if the latest reports are accurate, Barcelona's goalkeeper situation is going through problems.

According to reports from Catalan radio, the agents of both Marc-André ter Stegen and Claudio Bravo requested meetings with members of the Barcelona board regarding their status in the first team. Both players want to start in goal in La Liga and the Champions League next season.

Ter Stegen especially is the keeper most bothered by the situation. He has been the man between the posts in Cup games, and after two years in that position, the young German wants the permanent starting spot in league matches as well. Bravo is aware of the situation, and he won't sit on the bench while Stegen takes over the gloves the entire season.

The situation is clear: both players want to start, and both will leave if the other is the starter. Ter Stegen's agent met with the board, and while he didn't make any demands, he did mention the interest from Pep Guardiola and Manchester City, who are prepared to pay over €50 million to sign the 24-year-old. At the moment, Barça won't sell unless any club is ready to activate Stegen's €80 million buyout clause, but if the player isn't the starter by the season's start, he could force a move to England.

Bravo has a lower buyout clause (€40 million), but could force a move out and leave for less as well. Bravo and Stegen are not willing to go through a third season in the current setup, and Luis Enrique must make a definitive decision in regards to his number one keeper.

As soon as that decision is made, and it must be made this summer, the "loser" of the battle will leave Barcelona, and the club is already prepared to sign Diego Alves from Valencia to substitute the departing keeper. Let's wait for the next chapter of this complicated story.

A Fan's Perspective: First Team Roles

A break down of some of the performances from Barça's first friendly against Celtic.

Barcelona played their first pre-season friendly against Celtic in Dublin, which ended in a 3-1 win for the Blaugrana, with all goals coming in the first half. There were some players, that the fans were more intrigued by than the rest, and I'm  going to go ahead and break down a few of those players' performances.

Let's start with Aleix Vidal. After barely featuring in his debut season, there were concerns regarding his future at the club. Not only did the coach not count on him to start, but he was being excluded from matchday squads altogether. This past week, Vidal mentioned in the press about how he had a chat with Luis Enrique regarding his situation, and admitted that he wasn't working hard enough, and vowed to give the coach a selection problem this coming season. So how exactly did he do in his first friendly? The honest answer would be that he played a poor game defensively and an excellent game on the other end, which is understandable looking at how he isn't a natural fullback.

While his nutmeg that created the first goal of the game for Arda Turan, was probably the highlight of the match, his inability to time his tackles created a lot of trouble on the other end. While Vidal has improved his defensive positioning exceptionally well, relative to last season, he still gets turned by his man with ease; once the player gets by him, Vidal ability to turn, and get back on his marker was lacking. He also failed to put in a tackle when necessary, often back-paddling, till he was joined by his team mates in defence. While his over-all game was promising, his defensive abilities, still appear to be lacking which would need to be worked on, if he intends to be first choice, by the start of the season. Nonetheless, his offensive contribution is still world-class, and it was on display in spades against Celtic. He timed his runs well, in tandem with the movement on his side of the pitch, which I will covering further ahead.

The next player on the list would have to be Arda Turan. While there were multiple reports, of the player being available on sale, the coaching staff have time and again mentioned publicly, that they count on him; the player has echoed these sentiments, by claiming his desire to stay and prove his worth. Starting in the center of midfield alongside Denis Suarez, Arda still looked a little like his old self, but to say that he hasn't improved his game at central midfield would be false. There were some huge changes in Arda's game, that showed how much he has worked on his positioning. In contrast to last season, Arda looked mobile, and got into good passing lanes. He showed the composure of a seasoned veteran, often taking advantage of split second chaos, that his young teammates weren't able to do. His passing was good, and he took a mean shot in the first half from Aleix Vidal's pinpoint cross, that rocketed into the top right corner, from outside the box. His movement was intelligent, and he showed some of the tenacity that he'd lost since his move from Atletico Madrid. While some of his old traits from last season, like focusing too much on maintaining formation were still visible, he was mostly a positive, and it's a good sign, moving into the season.

The third player, who was also the biggest question mark from this summer, was Denis Suarez; While few argue about his quality as a player, there are many who question his ability to play as a central midfielder. If this game is anything to go by, Denis Suarez could be the future of Barça's midfield.

Let's give some context to that statement.

Everyone knows, that Lionel Messi is the best player on the planet; everyone also knows, that in the past few seasons, Messi has started to play incredibly deep, almost acting as a central midfielder positionally. While this seems like a good move for Messi to prolong his career, it is detrimental to the team, as Messi isn't mobile enough to play as a CM; he drops deep, but can shut down, when he feels like the ball is too far away, to make a significant impact. His lack of movement off the ball, is his biggest setback in changing roles. This, is where Denis Suarez comes in.

Throughout the match, Denis Suarez and Messi, switched roles, with Denis moving to play on the wing, every time Messi moved deep. The second Messi felt like the ball was too far away to make an impact, he would move back to the forward line, with Denis picking up the slack, and operating as a CM. Not only did Denis display organic movement alongside Messi, he also played as a genuine central midfielder every time he vacated the wing to get back into position. He showed mobility, pressed well, and displayed intelligence in creating the first goal, with a beautiful lobbed ball that found a pacing Vidal on the by-line. While Denis Suarez is new to the roster, he linked well with his older teammates. He controlled the midfield alongside Turan, adjusted to Messi's movement on the field, payed attention to the runs made by his teammates, and showed a lot of promise.

All three players mentioned above went into the match with a point to prove, and having played their bit in the first goal, I think they all did what they intended to do.

Honourable Mentions:

Aleña: Having come on in the second half, Aleña was one of the most talented players on the pitch. His awareness, and touch were eerily reminiscent of Xavi, and it will be interesting to see more of him, in the upcoming friendlies.

Borja Lopez: Despite having played for only twenty minutes in the second half, Lopez showed intelligence and passed well, making some important defensive plays. While he didn't play for long, he showed that he is someone to look out for.

Camara: As a winger turned fullback, much wasn't expected from Camara, as he formed a part of the volatile backline that comprised of the unpredictable Mathieu, JA Martinez, and Aleix Vidal. To say the least, he had one of the best performances on the pitch, contributing heavily in attack and defence. While he definitely needs some polishing, he could go on to make himself a part of the coach's plans, if he keeps performing at the high level that he displayed at Dublin.
