FC Barcelona President, on Lionel Messi: "Not Transferable"

Josep Maria Bartomeu has spoken. A lot. Barça's president commented on everything, from tickets to biting and the immediate future of the club

The old man has spoken. Finally.

FC Barcelona president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, gave the media a lot of time during an interview on Wednesday afternoon. Bartomeu opened it with a quick statement about his plans for the immediate future, including ticket sales, social efforts and business decisions. Then, the president answered questions. A LOT of questions. He responded to all of them, and was honest and clear about his answers. Well, not including transfers, but you know how it goes ...

On his opening statement, Bartomeu talked about the expansion plans. He wants to add qualified people to the board of directors, to help improve decision-making and marketing and bussiness strategies. He talked about some social projects and promised a record on ticket sales for next season.

Then, it was time to give the people what they want. Here are some highlights of his answers:

Lionel Messi

"He's not transferable. He is not going to be sold under any circumstances. We love Leo and he is the guy we're working with, because he is the key to the rebuilding project we are into. That's why we adapted his contract, he is very happy. I know that he doesn't want to leave and he knows that he is our leader. I wish good luck to him and Argentina in the World Cup."

Luis Suárez and meeting with Liverpool officials

"We are working on a deep rebuilding of our team, so I can't tell you exactly what signings are we negotiating. There are things going on but I can't tell you."

"We've been on a lot of trips for months but I can't explain it. We are trying to be as cautious as possible".

"Suárez is a Liverpool FC player. He is not one of our players, so I can't comment on him too much. What I will say is: I think it's very important that he apologized. It's honorable for a person to admit he's wrong when he makes mistakes. I understand that things can happen in the heat of competition, but it's important to his career, whether it's at Liverpool or anywhere else, it's important for him to admit that he was wrong and apologize. I'm happy for him".

Transfers

"Like I said, we can't comment on our transfers until they're official. You know we've signed Ter Stegen, Bravo and Rakitic, but there are nothing else official yet. I can tell you that there are a lot of negotiations advancing well, and we expect them to happen. As for the center-backs, Zubi told me he has the names and the talks are advancing but we won't reveal anything."

"We have the money to complete all signings we are planning. It can be exactly what I told you (around 150 million euros). It can be more, it can be less. But I assure you we have the money to complete every operation."

"We have all the names, yes. We're negotiating and we're happy with how it's going. I can't reveal the names, but we have them. The negotiations get a little tricky during the World Cup because teams want to wait to see if their players value is going up, but that won't stop us. We are negotiating and the signings are happening soon".

Xavi

"Everybody has some opinion on the 'Xavi Subject'. We will respect his decision, doesn't matter what it is. We trust him, we love him and we believe he is the greatest player and representative of this great institution. He has earned the right to do whatever he wants and we will respect his decision. And I can guarantee you he's coming back in the future, because we believe he is going to be an amazing manager for us."

Cesc Fàbregas

"We are sad he is leaving. We loved him, and we tried everything we could to sign him when Pep Guardiola asked for him. We always treated him well and he's done the same with us. It's probably a good career move to him to join Chelsea. I wish him the best."

There you have it, folks. What do you think of Bartomeu's interview? Do you like his answers?

FIFA World Cup: Lionel Messi Assists Angel Di Maria as Argentina Beat Switzerland

Argentina are through to the next round, but it took some doing, as the score was level until extra time. However, a typically brilliant run from Messi resulted in Di Maria scoring the winner

All group winners are through to the next round, but most of them had to work hard for it. Argentina were not any exception, beating Switzerland 1-0 with an extra time goal from Angel Di Maria.

Ezequiel Lavezzi came on for the injured Sergio Aguero in the starting lineup, but otherwise Argentina were unchanged. Lavezzi was not any more efficient than Aguero, however, though at least he helped out defensively.

Early on, Argentina had more chances on goal, but Switzerland maybe came closer. Notably, Josip Drmic had a chance to put Switzerland on top, but put through one-on-one, his attempted chimp went tamely into the hands of Romero.

Gonzalo Higuain again provided very little, and it's worrying that one of their best players during qualifying is sleepwalking through the tournament.

Marcos Rojo put in a good shift at left-back again, though he picked up a yellow card, which rules him out for the next match. Jose Maria Basanta did a decent job today and should start in the quarterfinal.

It was all about Lionel Messi again for Argentina, as he nearly single-handedly kept the team ticking. Tasked with both creating chances and recovering the ball, he simply wasn't close enough to goal, though he came quite close to scoring with a wicked volley.

The Swiss keeper, Diego Benaglio, had an inspired day and kept the scores level. But as the game wore on, gradually Argentina took control.

Di Maria had a very uneven game - on the one hand, he never stopped running and tried to force the issue, eventually scoring the winner... on the other, his imprecise decision-making resulted in giveaway after giveaway.

The Real Madrid player took 12 shots, but only 3 were on target. He attempted 19 crosses, but only 4 were accurate. With a 63% pass accuracy, he was second-worst on the team behind Romero, the keeper.

Argentina were so reliant on Messi that he actually led the team in successful tackles and dribbles. This could only work if Higuain, Lavezzi, and Di Maria were creating or finishing chances, and by and large, they really weren't.

Still, despite not convincing, Di Maria persevered. His boundless stamina was a great virtue and, with both teams tired, he took the spotlight.

But it was Messi, who dribbled into the defense and found Di Maria for the score, who ran the show.

Argentina aren't dominating, but few teams are. There's no reason to think they can't win it, but they probably will need to improve. Next up, Belgium.

Report: Liverpool FC and FC Barcelona Begin Luis Suárez Negotiations; Mathieu Gets Closer to Deal

The two latest signings for FC Barcelona this season are closer than ever, according to multiple reports from England and Spain

FC Barcelona has gone strong to the transfer market this season, and two more signings are getting closer and closer as the preseason begins in two weeks.

Luis Suárez, the ultra-talented/controversial Liverpool FC star, has reportedly agreed to a five-year contract, in which he will make 10 million euros per season, according to reports from England and Spain. Liverpool and Barcelona have already started the transfer negotiations, and Barça's initial offer is expected to be around £50 million, way down from the £80 million starting offer that was reported last week, because of the biting incident during the World Cup game between Italy and Uruguay, when Suárez attacked Italy's Chiellini, resulting in a nine-game international suspension and a four-month ban from any football-related activity for Luisito. He can still be negotiated, and both clubs have interest in the transfer.

The second signing is Valencia's Jeremy Mathieu, who's highly recommended by new manager Luis Enrique, who asked for the transfer. Valencia is reportedly reluctant to accept the €10 million offer, which is only half of Mathieu's buyout fee. The center-back has already met with the team's officials five times to ask for the transfer, and the deal is expected to be done by next week, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Luis Enrique doesn't expect to have a full squad by the start of preseason, but both Suárez and Mathieu could be part of the team soon rather than later.

What do you think, Barça fans? Are Suárez and Mathieu good signings for the club?

FIFA World Cup: 1 July 2014: Live Thread

Live thread for the last day of Round of 16 World Cup matches.

We're down to the last two games of the Round of 16 of the competition, and if the last three days are any indication we're in for a great day of football with one of the matches going at least into extra time. Yesterday France and Germany booked a spot in the Quarter-Finals after tough battles with Nigeria and Algeria, respectively.

Argentina vs Switzerland, Kickoff: 6pm CET

The day will kick off with two Barcelona players in action, Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano. Expectations for Argentina are sky high, but after unconvincing performances in an arguably very weak group it will be very interesting to see if La Albiceleste can step it up against the toughest opponent they have taken on so far in the World Cup. Apart from a strong showing against Honduras, Switzerland also haven't impressed many as they have done just enough to make it out of the Group Stage. But even though both teams struggled at times so far anything but a Argentina win will be a major upset.

Belgium vs USA, Kickoff: 10pm CET

Even though most experts are siding with a very impressive Belgium side in my opinion this one could really go either way. So far Belgium were bailed out by late heroics as goals late in the second half saved them on more than one occasions. In fact, all of their three game winning goals were scored after the 77th minute. USA on the other hand have advanced with only four points, but had a few bounces went their way they could've easily had at least seven points. All in all this is a USA team that could surprise today and give the Belgian youngsters a run for their money.

Make sure you enjoy today's football day as the next one doesn't come until July 4.

FIFA World Cup Round of 16: Argentina vs. Switzerland Match Preview

Argentina will play their first elimination game against Xherdan Shaqiri and the Swiss. Will Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano prevail?

The favorites have not had it easy so far.

Germany had to endure extra time after going 0-0 in normal time with Algeria.

Brazil won on penalties after a Chile shot deflected off the crossbar in extra time.

The Netherlands were about 5 minutes away from elimination before drawing level with Mexico. They won with a somewhat dubious 95th minute penalty score.

This made France's 2-0 win - which was a tense 0-0 draw until almost the 80th minute - seem like a stroll in the park.

No big favorite has been knocked out of the round of 16, but they all have had their scares.

Argentina will want to follow Colombia, who got their lead in the first half and never looked back. But to do so, they will have to contend against a hungry Swiss team led by their star, Xherdan Shaqiri.

The Bayern Munich man scored a hat trick in the last game of the group stage with the help of striker Josip Drmic. That combination will be the main problem for an Argentina team lacking true stars in defense. Barcelona's Javier Mascherano will have a big role to play yet again in the middle of the park.

Meanwhile, Diego Benaglio is a talented keeper and will have to do his best to keep Lionel Messi quiet. Argentina will hope Gonzalo Higuain will rediscover his form. The Napoli striker has not been up to his best this World Cup but remains an important figure,

This is doubly so because Sergio Aguero picked up an injury and may be out for the rest of the cup. "Kun" looked off and unfit in his previous games, but with him out, it only increases the pressure on Higuain to become the secondary scoring option.

His replacement, Ezequiel Lavezzi, is not nearly as clinical, but does offer pace and width. Crucially, he could be tasked with a little more defensive responsibility than Aguero.

Messi's supporting cast will have to deliver more if Argentina aspires to win the cup. Angel Di Maria showed sparks lately and if he reaches his highest level, look out.

Should Argentina continue to improve as they affirm they are confident they can do, they should make short work of a talented but unfancied Swiss side.

Otherwise, one of the favorites may be in for a long 120 minutes yet again.

Argentina (4-3-3): Romero; Zabaleta, Garay, Fede Fernández, Rojo; Gago, Mascherano, Di María; Messi, Higuaín, Lavezzi

Switzerland (4-2-3-1): Benaglio; Lichtsteiner, Djourou, Schär, Rodríguez; Behrami, Inler; Xhaka, Shaqiri, Mehmedi; Drmic

Barcelona vice-president Javier Faus says there is money available to sign whichever players the club wants, as speculation continues that Liverpool's Luis Suarez is bound for the Camp Nou despite being currently banned from all football for four months.

Is there a hidden agenda behind Suarez apology? -- Graham Hunter - ESPN FC

It's the kind of purchase which stinks of old-style Presidential transfer market policy - "dodgy season?" "Buy a superstar, drinks all round!" Nevertheless Barcelona have set their sights firmly on him, they are totally convinced that they'll get him and the Catalan media has been briefed to get the ticker-tape ready.
