The league leaders returned to action with a destruction of one of their biggest challengers
Following a two-week international break that saw 19 of their players in action, Barcelona Femení returned to action last Sunday. It was supposed to be a very tough match against the second best team in the Primera División, Real Sociedad.
There was quite a bit of pre-match buzz that this could be the first upset of the season for the reigning champs, especially coming off an international break where so many players were in action all over the world against a very good team.
And it certainly started that way, with Sociedad fighting Barça for possession early on and responding to Fridolina Rölfo’s opening goal with a 10th minute equalizer from Franssi. The visitors were not afraid to take the game to the leaders and for about 25 minutes it seemed like something shocking was brewing.
But then Barça turned on the style. And then some. Alexia Putellas and Lieke Martens completely took over the game, and led Barça to a truly exceptional 8-1 victory in front of the largest crowd to date at the Johan Cruyff Stadium. Putellas finished with four assists, Martens had two goals and an assist of her own, and the Blaugrana scored some great goals in the process.

The win against Sociedad maintained Barça’s perfect record to start the season: 10 wins in a row in all competitions, and a staggering 51 goals scored in just 8 league games. Jonatan Giráldez has seemingly achieved the impossible task of improving last season’s Treble winners, and the attack is simply unstoppable right now.
Barça’s women’s team is now enjoying a full week of rest and training after the win against La Real, which is good news considering they’ll have 5 games in 15 days starting on Saturday against Eibar. There are two Champions League group stage matches against Hoffenheim in which Barça could clinch a spot in the quarterfinals, as well as what is always a tough game against Levante in that schedule.
But if they destroyed the second best team in Spain with such ease, then the next five games shouldn’t be that hard. What a team.
