The boss spoke after the game
Ernesto Valverde was generally satisfied with the way in which his team played as a whole against newly promoted side Huesca.
If the offensive end was a positive aspect el Txingurri was more critical about the defense as he mentioned that on the night FC Barcelona, “didn’t receive many occasions. They [Huesca] had two. One when our legs were still cold which hurts because it means we didn’t start the match well. We need to analyze this because nobody likes to start the match 1-0 down. But the opponent also plays and look to annoy.”
Huesca took a shock lead inside three minutes through Juan Camilo Hernandez. Barcelona hit back to move 3-1 up before Alex Gallar scored again for the Liga newcomers.
The second half was a different story as Barca romped to victory, and I got Valverde’s thoughts at his post-match press conference.
“How important is it to be LaLiga leaders? This has only just started. There’s only a relative importance in being leaders through goal difference. There are teams such as Valencia and Atletico who are behind us but there are still many games left to play.”
“Rakitic deserves all the credit he’s getting. But all my players deserve awards, which is why I place relative importance to these prizes.
“VAR? It takes some getting used to. There’s an initial uncertainty, which is why I ask the referee what’s going on. What I see is that the linesmen usually get it right. Today wasn’t the case but in Valladolid it was. You realize that the plays are so tight but they usually get it right. It means you celebrate a goal with some delay but “what are you gona do? We’ll get used to it. You feel like it’s more fair. I don’t think it looses much time neither. Just half a minute or so.”
“Pique is not affected by what happened over the weekend. He’s always on the tip of everyone’s tongues and many times without wanting to be. We spoke and all is fine.”
Finally, Valverde, who decided not to make any rotations, argued his case by saying that “the intention is that all the players who fight to get a spot on the starting 11 try not to leave. Everyone will get their chance. We have many matches to play. There’s no “11 de gala” (11 untouchables). That’s something for the press. Our objective is that the 11 players out on the pitch are the best to obtain a win for that particular match”
