The boss’ current deal expires in the summer
Barcelona went on an undefeated streak last season but the sense of pride that came from such an accomplishment was wiped clean after Real Madrid won the Champions League once again.
It has been a while since Barcelona played boring football or benched players who didn’t deserve it. Yet, Ernesto Valverde epitomises everything wrong about the club’s philosophy.
Barcelona was never about winning and the accolades were always a second thought as opposed to playing beautiful, dominant football.
This thought process remains relevant in the hearts of the fans and they’re not willing to settle. Then why is the board? Valverde has brought in players that I would have never envisioned playing for Barcelona a few ago.
Barcelona’s footballing identity has been diluted and the board is feeding the fans Kool-aid with clever lines and reactionary decisions.
Many had hoped that Ernesto Valverde will not continue but recent reports suggest that the deal to extend his time at the club has already been signed which makes me wonder if it really is the right thing to do.
When the club signed Lucho, there was fidelity to the club’s ideals. The same goes for someone like Tito Vilanova or Pep Guardiola.
These coaches represented an idea of loyalty to the club’s principles and while it is okay to change with the times, every organisation needs to have a certain identity that remains unchanged no matter the situation.
Extending Valverde’s contract is the easy choice but perhaps, not one that will do any good to this remarkable group of players capable of winning everything.
