WHAT A PERFORMANCE!
Barcelona finished the first month of the new La Liga season in style, dominating Huesca at Camp Nou on their way to a 8-2 victory. Barça conceded a bad goal early on but recovered quickly, putting on a passing and shooting clinic for the rest of the game and giving the home fans a very entertaining show.
FIRST HALF
The game started with Huesca taking a shocking lead through Cucho Hernández in the second minute, and Barça had their work cut out for them for the rest of the half. Huesca naturally dropped deep and defended with eight men behind the ball, leaving their two strikers free to create problems on the counter.
But Barça did not have any problems with Huesca’s counter and dominated the rest of the half, creating chance after chance and forcing goalkeeper Axel Werner into many saves. They also got goals, first with Lionel Messi, then with an own goal from Jorge Pulido and a tap-in from Luis Suárez.
The 3-1 lead looked strong and safe as we approached halftime, but another defensive lapse from Barça saw Álex Gallar score for Huesca and leave the game wide open at the half. For fans of both sides, this was nerve-racking. For neutrals, this was the game of the weekend.
SECOND HALF
Things seemed wide open at halftime, but Barça made sure to leave no doubt about the winner right at the start of the second half. In just 15 minutes, through goals from Ousmane Dembélé, Lionel Messi and Ivan Rakitic, Barça made it 6-2 and ended the match for good. Some of the passing and finishing in those three goals was just ridiculous, and the players were clearly having a lot of fun on the pitch.
With a 6-2 scoreline and Huesca completely stunned by how quickly they got destroyed in the second half, we didn’t see much action in the final minutes as Barça pretty much passed their way into the final whistle. There was still time for Jordi Alba to join the scoring party, and Luis Suárez scored a penalty in the final seconds to make it 8-2 on the night.
Midfielders Arturo Vidal and Arthur got around 20 minutes on the pitch, which is good news since the two will have big roles when the Champions League starts and Valverde needs to rotate his squad.
The final whistle came at Camp Nou, and what started out as a potential disaster ended in a very encouraging performance and a fantastic result heading into the first international break of the season.
