Luis Suarez can make amends for Uruguay against France

Time to put things right

Luis Suarez returns to World Cup action on Friday as Uruguay take on France in the quarter-finals of the competition in Russia.

Oscar Tabarez’s side have enjoyed a strong tournament and Suarez has two goals and an assist in his four games so far.

He also has a bit of making up to do after being sent home in disgrace from the last World Cup after taking a chunk out of Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini’s shoulder.

He’s also remembered for his antics at World Cup 2010 when his deliberate handball on the line prevented Ghana scoring as Uruguay made it to the semi-finals.

Suarez seems to know this is a good chance to create some happy memories for his country in Russia.

“I have said I want to put things right after the way I left the last World Cup, and this can be my time, this can be our time,” he said.

“It is not like I’m thinking about the last World Cup, but in 2014 I know there were three million very disappointed Uruguayans, and this time I want to play my part and make sure there are three million very happy Uruguayans.

It isn’t about living in the past – this for me is about making things right.”

Uruguay have been dealt a bit of a blow with an injury to Edinson Cavani. Suarez and Cavani have formed a great partnership up front but it looks as though the Paris Saint-Germain will not start the match.

All of which means the goalscoring onus will fall even more heavily on Suarez against France. The Barcelona man is already his country’s top goalscorer and will be expected to provide the goals against les Bleus.

Suarez will also come up against Samuel Umtiti on Friday which should add a bit of extra spice to which is already a pretty interesting match-up.
