The club has been linked with a new winger
Barcelona have been struggling with their identity for the past couple of seasons. The club has always been popular for playing a 4-3-3 formation but that has changed in recent years due to the departure of iconic midfielders like Xavi Hernandez and now, Andres Iniesta.
Barcelona experimented for much of last season playing central midfielders in wide areas to compensate for the departure of Neymar. Ousmane Dembele was still finding his feet and the decision to switch to a 4-4-2 remains a bone of contention with the fans.
Buying a true winger like Willian or Pavon would change that. The club has been linked with the duo in the last few days and which of those names, if at all, will arrive is still speculation. But do Barcelona really need a winger?
The answer is a “yes”. The club has Coutinho and Denis Suarez who have similar profiles but neither is a pacey winger. The club also seems to look at the two of them as interiors and moving them inside would mean that a spot would open on the wings.
Personally, I would like to bring neither of those players and scout the market for someone more influential. Willian is a bench-piece at Chelsea and Pavon’s hype burned bright and fast but has died after abysmal performances in the World Cup.
Barcelona can do better than a washed up bench-piece and a over-hyped youngster. There has to be some sort of middle ground.
