The Ballon d'Or is Stupid - But Lionel Messi and Luis Enrique Should Win

The award has its flaws but since it is still recognized and important, I'll tell you why the pair should win their respective awards at the gala.

The Ballon d'Or is a stupid award.

I wanted to say this in a year when Lionel Messi would win to make it clear this is not some BB-bias at work here.

The voting period makes no sense. Why close voting in November? This year's Clasico is a perfect example. It was played AFTER the voting ended. One imagines the fates of Neymar, Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Luis Suarez may have shifted had voting closed just a month later.

Will anyone remember that match when it's time to vote for a winner next November? Probably not. You may say that's always a problem no matter when the voting ends, but it's not really the case. If the voting ended at the end of the season, end-of-the-season stats would reflect performances even from matchday 1. No one keeps November-to-November stats. Who has scored most goals since the voting closed last year and the voting opened this year? I can guess, but I don't think that information is widely circulated.

The voting is weird and political. It's already revealed Robert Lewandowski will only vote for his teammates and friends, and who can blame him? He's hardly the only case. And then there's Norwegian coach Per-Mathias Høgmo, who has voted Javier Mascherano as the world's best player, followed by Ronaldo, with Gareth Bale in third place. I cannot understand why, unless he thinks Mascherano's 2014 World Cup performance counts for this award and also overrates that performance a lot.

The reality is the voters are not looking at every match or poring over deep analytics or stats.

Because of the recency effect, voters will be swayed more by things happening closest to the time they vote. And for some reason we're highlighting late October and early November. The recency effect would probably be OK if you voted at the end of the summer, when trophies have just been handed out. For some reason we're going with the calendar year approach, and not even letting the full calendar play out. The recency effect boosts random matches and downplays others in a haphazard manner.

FIFA's decision to extend the voting period arbitrarily for the 2013 version of the award was a mistake at best, and corruption at worst. The extension put the focus on European playoffs into the World Cup, just as Messi was injured. Of course, this surely helped Ronaldo get more votes.

This isn't to say Ronaldo did or did not deserve to win. It's not really about that. If the original vote had Ronaldo losing, and a re-vote gave him the win, it seems very corrupt. On the other hand, if the original vote had him winning, and the re-vote merely extended his lead, Ronaldo should be annoyed that FIFA gave his award an air of illegitimacy when it was legit.

But again it's not about who won it. It's about taking a vote, not revealing the result, and ordering a re-vote under nebulous pretenses. It's par for the course, so maybe it's not worth getting worked up over, but it's there.

Now that I've complained enough, let me tell you why Messi should (and will) win.

It's simple. He was brilliant throughout the year, bar the time he was injured. He played possibly his most complete season ever in terms of overall contribution to the team. It was not just scoring, but creating chances, dictating play, even putting in tackles. It's hardly mentioned too much but Messi defends more now than he has in years. And you'll see him dominate games and not get on the stat sheet. It's a mistake to only look at goals, or even goals and assists. Yes, he dominates the stat sheet often, too, but his impact has to be seen, not calculated.

How often has Messi ran the show, set up teammates once and again? Played a super pass to Suarez who then passes to Neymar, who scores? The stats say Neymar goal, Suarez assist, Messi nothing. But we all know. His brilliant form was rewarded with a historic treble, and while he is surely disappointed he did not win, he still did very well to lead Argentina to a Copa America final.

Ronaldo and Neymar will sweep up second and third place, respectively. Why no Luis Suarez? Look at my rant in the beginning.

Luis Enrique should win Coach of the Year.

But it's close. Jorge Sampaoli has done a fantastic job as coach of Chile to get the team playing not only extremely well, but really attractive football. In fairness, Marcelo Bielsa started the process more than 5 years ago, but Sampaoli has pushed it to the next level. Chile have gone from "hipster picks" to a powerhouse, and Sampaoli deserves credit in that.

That said, it's extremely difficult to rate any national team competition other than the World Cup as more important than the Champions League. Actually, even the World Cup trails Europe's premier competition by a wide margin in terms of pure quality.

Copa America is great, fun, exciting, and historic, but let's be honest. Chile had to win 4 games total, draw another, and win the final in a shootout. All the matches were at home. Can you compare that to slogging it out through a European season? Beating Bayern Munich 3-0? Nah.

Which brings us to Luis Enrique. He went from nearly being fired at the start of the year to having even his staunchest haters start to believe. Yes, of course he boasts three of the best, if not the three best, players in the world. But it's a chicken-or-egg situation as anyone will tell you, getting three superstars to cooperate the way he has is not easy. Sure, partly it's down to their personalities, but partly it is the way he has handled it, and the way he has set up the team to accommodate them.

His development of Sergi Roberto from interior without a future to pivot to right back to interior again to right winger to integral part of the team has been amazing and emblematic. It goes without saying it would be impossible without Roberto's belief or talent. But it's also hard to envision that just any coach could guide him through it, or even have the audacity of mapping it out. This is just an example.

So far this season, Lucho has coped with a transfer ban and several notable absences, none bigger than Messi's. Scratch that, he's done more than cope. He's put Real Madrid to the sword, won the Champions League group, and put Barcelona at the summit of La Liga. Again, not a perfect season (Barcelona stumbled in some games and even -gasp - lost a minor cup). But as far as coaches go, he's the winner.

Meet football's Dr. Jekyll - Dani Alves

Dani Alves has had some really good and really bad performances over the last year and a half - which has caused fans to split over their opinions. Oddly enough, his performances have also caused the numbers to split, as well.

Over the last year and a half, Dani Alves has created some polarizing opinions. Sometimes the fans adore him - like the time he assisted Luis Suarez in the winning goal of El Clasico. Sometimes fans loathe him - like any time he has to face Nolito. Sometimes the fans love and hate him simultaneously. The man that was once a fan favorite at Camp Nou now has people sitting on both sides of the fence - and it is entirely understandable.

Just looking through the statistics, Dani Alves is actually really, really good. Using some defensive figures that account for possession, Dani Alves has been a top 5 right back in Europe this season. He's winning back roughly 5.3 balls per 90 minutes - which is a really, really good rate. He's also completing nearly 30% of his crosses this season - which is somewhere between third and fourth, depending on whether you decide to account for opposition faced.

No matter how you look at it, Dani Alves has done a lot of really, really good things this season - and that's largely what has created the section of fans that love him. Dani has his avid supporters, and - given the numbers - he absolutely should. According to our friends and SportMatrix, Alves has the sixth highest rate of positive events on defense and attempts the most crosses per match (which is a good thing, considering he completes them at high rates). Unfortunately, Dani also seems to do a lot wrong.

SportMatrix also suggests that Dani does more wrong than most other fullbacks in the discussion of the top tier - coming in second, behind only Real Madrid's Danilo. This is where the polarizing opinions come in. While Dani does a lot right, he also does a lot wrong - and the difference between his good and bad actions ranks just outside the top 10. And when we flip to offense, his rate of "good crosses" isn't great, either. While he completes a lot of them, his rate of good crosses is just inside the top 10.

To be clear, none of this suggests that Dani isn't a good player. Everything available suggests that he's still a top 10 right back in Europe - potentially even top 5. While he is polarizing, his rate of doing things well is really good - which gives him a decent cushion. The only concern is the effect that has on the rest of the players. Dani's great moments help players like Messi, Suarez, and Neymar score, but his bad moments force Rakitic, Pique, and Busquets to make up for his mistakes - which often leaves the defense open and vulnerable.

His mistakes go far beyond one step, and can often result in a chain of events leading to a goal allowed by another player. Much of Rakitic's first few months with the club were spent playing out of position on the right flank because Alves wouldn't (or couldn't) - and his performance suffered because of it. Dani's poor performance has a tendency to permeate throughout the rest of the squad, and can cause the team to struggle mightily, at times.

The highs are definitely high with Alves, but the lows are also very low - and that creates both polarizing opinions and performances. Dani's become one of the few guys that can create levels of opinions - on both ends - as extreme as they come. The inclusion of Aleix Vidal in the squad should help the club find a more consistent performer, and that should help the club tremendously, but for now we just have to hope that his high stays high - and we can avoid any miscues.

Off-the-radar: Scoring four past Real Madrid – The story of AD Alcorcón

Barcelona beating Real Madrid 4-0 was amazing. Spectacular. Unreal. So today we look at another team that did the same.

Sergio Mora came onto the rugged pitch of the Estadio Santo Domingo, along with his other teammates, to the applause and cheers of 3,000 spectators. The stadium was half-empty, but for the amateur club, it was a dream to be a part of the match. This match.

This match, they were playing Real Madrid.

Read the Madrid lineup - Dudek; Arbeloa, Albiol, Metzelder, Drenthe; Mahamadou Diarra, Guti, Van der Vaart; Granero; Raúl and Benzema - and you would have goosebumps as a first division side, forget an amateur third division side with an average annual salary of €36,000. Oh, and Gago, Marcelo and Van Nistelrooy also played in that match.

It was AD Alcorcón vs Real Madrid, and it was spectacular.

It was spectacular because it was Alcorcón’s first match against top-flight opposition. And what better way to have a match like that than against nine international players in the starting eleven.

It was spectacular because no one had known about this small club or that it was based in Madrid itself.

It was spectacular because of the financial gap between the two teams. The wage bill of Alcorcón’s matchday squad was one million euros, exactly 110 times less than that of Real Madrid.

It was also spectacular for another reason. Real Madrid were destroyed.

Alcorcón’s midfield, who nobody knew about, suddenly looked better than internationally capped players. Ernesto Gómez and Fernando Béjar, the interiors, ran like dogs, chasing the ball and hassling the opposition at every opportunity. Ruben Sanz, on the tip of the midfield diamond, was neat and tidy in possession, keeping the play ticking and the ball flowing in the final third. And donning the number 10 shirt, Sergio Mora, sitting in the base of midfield in a regista role, became central to every play.

The passing, pressing and possession was excellent. Real Madrid’s midfield looked liked the ones in the third division. They were being outplayed in every department.

The desire to win was evident. Shot after shot, world-class pass after world-class pass, recovery after recovery, Alcorcón had the game in their hands.

The first goal was precisely that - a beautiful pass from Sergio Mora found Real reject and striker Borja Pérez, who dribbled past two Real Madrid defenders and scored past a third.

The second came from Mora again - released by Béjar, he passed to Borja in the box for a certain goal. It was a goal, just that Arbeloa had got there first.

Real were shocked. And it was disappointing that they had only two shots to show as a recovery, which former Atlético Madrid goalkeeper Juanma easily parried away.

Alcorcón were still dangerous, still playing extremely well. A deadly cross from right-back Nagore found the post, the goal-line but not the goal.

A deadly counter from Alcorcón saw second striker Diego Cascón play the ball into the box again. This time, Ernesto made a perfectly timed run to slot past Dudek.

By half-time, Alcorcón were ahead by three goals. By the hour mark, they would make it four, as a poorly cleared set piece found Borja, who coolly finished home.

Real Madrid tried. But as hard as they tried something always came in the way - Juanma was spectacular but so was the team. Whenever a Real Madrid player got the ball there was an Alcorcón player in his face. Whenever there was an Alcorcón player on the ball there were four more ahead of him to pass the ball too. With passing that exquisite and moves that intricate, all that was left was to walk the ball into the net.

AD Alcorcón 4-0 Real Madrid. On 27th October, 2009, the damage was done. Real Madrid went trophyless that season; the psychological damage had been too much.

By contrast, Alcorcón were promoted that very season, and for the first time were playing in the professional leagues in 2010-11. They have not looked back since, and are constantly pushing for promotion to the top flight - they even made it to the final of the playoffs in 2011-12, only losing to Valladolid.

This season, they are just two points away from the promotion playoffs, and have the squad and the quality to have a breakout season. And even if they don’t, the fans wouldn’t care that much.

For they will forever remember the Alcorcónazo.

FC Barcelona News: 29 November 2015; Barcelona Brush Aside Real Sociedad, Celeberate 116th Birthday

FC Barcelona cruise to a 4–0 victory over Real Sociedad | FC Barcelona
It was another scintillating performance by the Trident, FC Barcelona’s ruthlessly effective forward line, which, after getting all four goals on Saturday, has now scored 30 of the team’s 33 league goals so far this season, an astonishing 91 per cent share, just one in a panoply of staggering figures being put up by the big three this season.

Five keys to FC Barcelona's 4–0 victory over Real Sociedad | FC Barcelona
Barça under Luis Enrique are yet to drop a point this season at home in the league. Their seven league games have seen them score 22 goals and concede just five. The last time they conceded at home was on 5 October against Eibar. A great part of their league success is down to this fact

Neymar: 'The victory is what's important' | FC Barcelona
Onward and upward. That seems to be the only way to describe the current trajectory of FC Barcelona striker Neymar Jr, who scored two more goals in Saturday’s 4–0 victory over Real Sociedad at Camp Nou. Neymar continues to top the La Liga scoring list, where he currently sits with 14 goals.

Luis Enrique: players responded to the challenge | FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona head coach Luis Enrique was glad he was right. After using Friday’s press conference to alert his players that Real Sociedad were no laggards, the Catalans appeared to heed that advice to the fullest, putting in a quintessential team effort to down the Txuriurdin by a score of 4–0 at Camp Nou.

La Liga News: 29 November 2015; Atletico Madrid Edge Espanyol, Lose Tiago to Broken Leg

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone sends love to Tiago | Sky Sports
The Portuguese was taken off on a stretcher during the first half of the match at the Vicente Calderon, having fallen awkwardly after an attempted challenge on Espanyol forward Marco Asensio. The injury is expected to rule the 34-year-old out for the rest of the season, but Simeone says he is already plotting his recovery.

Tiago stretchered off as Atletico Madrid beat Espanyol - ESPN FC
A solitary goal by in-form Antoine Griezmann saw Atletico overcome Espanyol to keep the pressure on league leaders Barcelona -- but they were rocked by a serious injury to midfielder Tiago. France international Griezmann netted his third goal in two games with under three minutes on the clock at the Vicente Calderon, and was enough to beat the Catalans and ensure a third straight league win for Diego Simeone's side.

Nolito strikes it lucky to fire Celta Vigo back into top four - ESPN FC
Celta Vigo owed their return to the top four of the Primera Division with a 2-1 victory over Sporting Gijon to a huge slice of luck. The Galician outfit's excellent start to the season was becoming a distant memory after losing three of their previous four games.

Villarreal face Getafe with no healthy strikers - Villarreal USA
As if that wasn't bad enough, EPM reports Bakambu didn't take part in training yesterday and there's only about a 10-20% chance he'll be able to play--his ankle is still bothering him. At least Eric Bailly has been cleared to play after his clash of heads versus Eibar.

Deportivo La Coruna extend undefeated run to four Primera Division matches - ESPN FC
Deportivo La Coruna extended their undefeated run to four Primera Division matches with a 2-0 win at Las Palmas. The visitors took the lead on 16 minutes when Lucas Perez beat the offside trap to get away down the right, carrying the ball on towards the edge of the Las Palmas penalty area as defender Vicente Gomez tracked back.

Late capitulation leaves Malaga bottom Primera Division - ESPN FC
Brazilian forward Charles headed home a cross from Miguel Torres to give the hosts the lead on the stroke of half-time, and Pablo Fornals struck on the rebound to double their advantage after 57 minutes, just moments after Fernando Tissone had been dismissed for picking up a second yellow card.

Gracia not afraid of Malaga sack | Football Espana
Malaga boss Javi Gracia has insisted that he is not afraid of losing his job, despite Saturday’s visit of Granada being portrayed as a must-win. The Andalucians head into Week 13 rock bottom of La Liga, with only five goals scored and three successive defeats to their name, but the Coach is adamant his side are only one victory away from all their "wounds being healed".

MSN dominates: Barcelona wins 4-0 over Real Sociedad

In this column, Xoel Càrdenas gives you his take on FC Barcelona's 4-0 win over Real Sociedad at the Camp Nou on Saturday evening. Xoel talks the win, Dani Alves' big match, and the trio of Leo Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar making more magic.

Luis Suarez had the first chance at goal in the third minute, as a Neymar through ball found Luis heading towards goal, but La Real goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli was there to make the save. Ivan Rakitic was wrongly called offside just a few minutes later. Rulli had to come out to deny a Neymar run toward net in the 11th minute. Andres Iniesta hit the post on a header in the 13th minute. Claudio Bravo made a nice grab on a La Real cross into the box in the 18th minute. Neymar opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, as a great low cross into the box by Dani Alves found his countryman who slammed it into the back of the net. Great setup by Lionel Messi who found Dani to start the play.

L

Suarez picked up the second Barcelona goal in the 41st minute, as another Alves cross into the box found Luis, who sent a bullet volley past Rulli and into the back of the net. Golazo de Luisito!

Neymar made it 3-0 in the 53rd minute, as an Iniesta through ball found Jeremy Mathieu on the left who then crossed it into the box and Neymar tapped it in for his second goal.

Messi nearly had a goal in the 60th minute, but his volley went straight into the arms of Rulli. Late in the match, Bravo made a nice save on a La Real shot on goal, then a minute later, Messi's shot at goal hit the crossbar. In stoppage time, Messi got his goal thanks to an assist from Neymar and setup by Suarez.

FT: FC Barcelona 4-0 Real Sociedad

Xoel's Take

Overall, it was a solid match for Barcelona, minus the last 15 minutes of the match when FCB allowed La Real to gain possession.

The Barcelona defense tends to slip up, at times, but doesn't break. Barça has only allowed one goal in its last seven matches, with the lone goal allowed being Edin Dzeko's last second goal for AS Roma in the 6-1 Barcelona win Champions League play last week.

Sergio Busquets continues to show why he's the best CDM in the world. Via Barca Numbers: In the last six matches, Busquets has won back 47 balls, has made 20 successful tackles and has only caused five fouls. Andrés Iniesta continues to grow his legacy as one of the greatest midfielders of all time — not just this era. For me, I thought it was a good move by Luis Enrique to bring on Adriano for Alves because as we get further into the season, rotations will be more needed, and having Adriano — being the utility player that he is — with some playing time may come in handy later on in the season.

What a performance by the Barcelona fullbacks against La Real. Jeremy Mathieu picked up an assist. My man of the match was Dani Alves. The Brazilian has been on fire lately, and against La Real, he continued his good form. Two assists for Dani and fine defending on the night. If Dani continues his solid play, it will allow Lucho to keep Sergi Roberto at midfield and allow Aleix Vidal to play RW in January.

Once again, MSN did damage to another club. I can't recall a trio of players doing this in world football. Just when one thinks they are about to have an off night or they're about to cool down, MSN gets hot and goals for four or five goals. It's not just that all three are great players, it's that all three can take over a match and end the opponent's night. Other clubs are lucky if they have one player who can do this occasionally; Barcelona has three players who take over matches every single game.

It's not just that MSN are talented and great, it's that their chemistry on and off the pitch is so great that makes them unstoppable. They are not just teammates, they are great friends who thanks to unselfishness; understanding and accepting their roles; teamwork; and desire to make the team better, has made MSN and Barcelona an unstoppable, historic force.

We know Messi will win his fifth Ballon d'Or in January. It's unlikely MSN will be the top three finalists for the FIFA Ballon d'Or, which is a shame and a disgrace because we all know they deserve it. I doubt any of them will feel bad about it because for them, it's more about team trophies than individual awards.

MSN: made of football sugar, spice and everything nice.

Lastly, Leo Messi played in his 600th career match. What better way to celebrate in front of your family than scoring a goal in a win to continue pace atop the La Liga table. #Messi600

FC Barcelona 4-0 Real Sociedad: Match Review

A review of Barcelona's comfortable home win against Real Sociedad courtesy of goals from Neymar, Luis Suárez and Lionel Messi.

After facing Madrid last week, it was another Real for Barça this time as they met Eusebio Sacristán's Real Sociedad. Eusebio, a player who made over 200 appearances for Barcelona, was facing the Catalans for the first time as a manager having replaced David Moyes.

Immediately from kick off, La Real were looking to adopt a high press. Not allowing Barcelona to have time on the ball and looking to make it tricky for the home side to get their natural, passing game going. However, Barcelona were looking for the chip over the top frequently in the hope of getting a player in behind Sociedad's high line. The first to do this was Luis Suárez. The Uruguayan raced away but the pass was a little too long and Gerónimo Rulli managed to collect it.

Barça were probing but so were Real Sociedad and both sides were looking through a long ball as a route to get at the other team. After scoring last weekend, Andrés Iniesta again came close in the 13th minute. A dink from Suárez found the midfielder in the box but he could only direct his header onto the foot of the post.

Filling in for Jordi Alba, Jeremy Mathieu was regularly looking to get on the overlap down the left flank but it was on the opposite side that the opening goal came. Lionel Messi found a charging Dani Alves and the Brazilian drilled in a low cross to his compatriot, Neymar. Neymar made a run inside the box, beat the defender to the ball and finished past the keeper at the near post.

Real Sociedad were adopting a more physical approach in order to stop Barcelona breaking through again but Barça's quick passing was making it tough for the opponent to get near them. It wasn't long after Neymar's goal that Barcelona doubled their lead. After registering his first assist of the season, Dani Alves got his second. This time he floated the ball towards the back post and it was met by the foot of Suárez. On the volley, Suárez scissor-kicked the ball and it flew past Rulli to make it 2-0 to the home side.

Having won the last 14 of this fixture, Barcelona were looking comfortable and the half time whistle came with the side enjoying a two goal cushion.

However, not content on just a two gaol lead, Barcelona burst out of the traps for the second half. Eight minutes after the restart, Barcelona got their third. Messi, again, started the move having slid the ball into the path of Mathieu. The defender narrowly beat the offside trap before laying the ball on a plate for Neymar. The forward got his second and the fans were enjoying what they were seeing.

Having set up many attacks, Messi was now looking to be on the end of one. Neymar sprinted down the left wing to meet an Iniesta pass and he cut the ball back towards Messi on the edge of the box. The Argentine volleyed towards goal but it whisked just past the post.

With his job done, Dani Alves was substituted just before the hour mark. Two accurate cross had led to two gaols and Alves' departure was met with a standing ovation from the Camp Nou crowd. With one full back having been substituted, it was just six minutes later that the other one was. Having also registered an assist, Mathieu put in a good performance before being replaced by Jordi Alba in the 66th minute.

The Barça attacks just kept coming and it was looking like it wasn't going to end 3-0. Hunting his first league goal in two months, Messi lined up a free kick on the edge of the area. It curled up and around the wall but didn't dip down in time to test the keeper. Immediately after the free kick, Luis Enrique made his third and final change as Javier Mascherano made way for Marc Bartra.

Going into the final stages of the match, the game seemed to open up more and it allowed Real Sociedad more chances. These chances were more half chances than anything and every time they missed one, Barça looked to counter. The pace of Neymar was a constant threat as Messi looked to pick out his strike partner routinely.

However, Claudio Bravo was required late in the game. Bruma worked his way into the box and attempted to look for the far corner only to be denied by the keeper. At the other end, Messi tried the same, only to see his effort rattle off the bar.

As we entered injury time, Messi finally got his goal. Neymar tricked his way down the wing before playing a quick one-two with Suárez. He squared the ball into the path of Messi for the tap-in. The game ended 4-0 and it was a routine win for Barça thanks to the brilliance of the front three.

Lionel Messi finally gets his goal after some nice passing

Lionel Messi has finally found the score sheet in today's match against Real Sociedad. After Barcelona scored three goals, they tried everything they could to get the reigning World Player of the Year a goal. Finally after a beautiful passing sequence, Neymar slid a pass across the face of goal for Messi to hammer home.

It's his fourth La Liga tally of the season and his ninth in all competitions. With Messi, Neymar, and Suarez in unbelievable form, it's hard to see anyone stopping this Barcelona train anytime soon.

Barcelona vs Real Sociedad, 2015/16 La Liga: Final Score 4-0 as teamwork does the (beautiful) job

Barcelona continue to dominate La Liga, winning 4-0 at home against Real Sociedad with another fantastic performance. The whole team was dominating, and the 'MSN' trio all got in the scoreboard to give the Blaugranes one more victory, extending the unbeaten streak to 10 matches. The team still looks unstoppable, if you're wondering.

FIRST HALF

Barça had a difficult start to the match due to Sociedad's very high and intense pressing. The visitors were solid and recovered quite a few balls close to the box, but the Blaugranes were always quick to erase any remote chance of a shot. As the minutes went on, the Catalans started gaining territory, and Lionel Messi got more involved. The Argentinian played a nice little ball to Dani Alves, who crossed it to Neymar that buried home the opening goal.

With a cushion in the score, the hosts were much more comfortable and didn't get the same pressure from La Real. Barça continued to dominate possession and pick the right moment to attack. Not a lot of chances were created, but the efficiency was there. A sensational long pass from Iniesta found Alves again, and the Brazilian again delivered a great cross, this time to Luis Suárez, who scored a magical goal with an unbelievable volley.

Two-nothing, and a very good and satisfying half.

SECOND HALF

The game got easier very early in the second period, thanks to a lackluster defensive start by Sociedad, who went forward and left gaps behind. Iniesta saw one and found Mathieu with a through ball, and the French left-back assisted Neymar for the third. Game over.

But there was still time for Leo to score. Beautiful one-two between Suárez and Neymar, who served Messi to give all MSN members a goal. Great win again.

Barcelona: Bravo; Alves (Adriano), Piqué, Mascherano (Bartra), Mathieu (Alba); Busquets, Rakitic, Iniesta; Messi, Suárez, Neymar

Goals: Neymar (21', 52'), Suárez (41'), Messi (90')

Real Sociedad: Rulli, Aritz, Mikel, Iñigo, Yuri; Pardo, Granero, Prieto, Canales (Oiarzabal); Vela (Bruma), Agirretxe (Hernández)

Neymar taps in for his brace

It's three for Barcelona! Neymar Jr. has his 14th goal of the season after finishing off a Jeremy Mathieu pass from the left flank. The Frenchman was played into space by Andres Iniesta and the low cross into the box was finished easily.

Barca lead 3-0 within 55 minutes. This one could get ugly and if recent form is any indication, it probably will.

This Luis Suarez flying volley should be worth more than one goal

Unreal strike!

Ho-hum, Barcelona are two goals to the good once again. Like it's routine they are scoring highlight reel goals like they are nothing. This time it's Luis Suarez on the end of a Dani Alves cross. The Brazilian's ball found the striker in space and he hit an amazing flying volley into the back of the net.

You just won't find many goals in the world better than that and Suarez makes it look like child's play. Simply incredible stuff. We should all be thankful we get to witness this Barcelona team play scintillating football on a weekly basis.

Neymar finishes off a typically brilliant Barcelona goal

Picking up from right where they left off on Tuesday, Barcelona have pulled in front of Real Sociedad 22 minutes into their La Liga match. Neymar Jr.'s 13th goal in 12 matches gives the Blaugrana a well-deserved lead. It hasn't been a masterful performance, but they've clearly been the better side.

Lionel Messi chipped a pass out to the right flank and Dani Alves. The right back played a driven low pass into a streaking Neymar and the Brazilian made no mistake in burying it into the back of the net. Barca lead 1-0!

Full Coverage: FC Barcelona vs Real Sociedad: News, Lineups, and Goals

Everything you need to know about FC Barcelona vs. Real Sociedad

FC Barcelina will be looking to extend their recent run of good form tomorrow and secure their sixth consecutive victory in all competitions when they welcome Real Sociedad to the Camp Nou for Saturday’s early afternoon kick-off. The Blaugrana currently hold a five point lead at the top of the table courtesy of their thrashing of arch rivals Real Madrid last weekend and a win against the struggling Basque Country outfit would see them extend that gap to eight points, albeit temporarily.

But, with Real Madrid generally reeling and facing a tough trip to face SD Eibar, while second place Atletico Madrid also face a potentially tricky test at home to RCD Espanyol, who knows whether that extended lead could stick after all. Certainly, Luis Enrique must be feeling confident regarding his side’s chances tomorrow; their decimation of Real Madrid was a joy to behold, and the footballing masterclass only continued in midweek with a humbling of AS Roma.

So, what chance does Real Sociedad stand, particularly given their start to the season?

Roughly 10 and a half months ago, Real Sociedad welcomed the Blaugrana to the Anoeta, and under the guidance of a somewhat stubborn and archaic Scottish manager, they upset all the odds to claim all three points against FC Barcelona. Luis Enrique’s fate hung in the balance, star players were reportedly unhappy; the rest, as they say, is history.

Barcelona rebounded from that defeat to not only take La Liga by storm, but take the entire footballing world by the throat. Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid; no matter the opposition, Barcelona grew stronger with every match and consistently emerged not only victorious, but dominant. The successes in these matches built the foundations for a historic treble, and now, Enrique’s side appear to be climbing to an ever higher level.

Truly, we cannot overstate just how impressive Barca have been in the past two matches; it’s been Harlem Globetrotter-esque at times; but we aren’t playing the Washington Generals in a fixed match, we’re playing real teams in real matches and just making them look… well, stupid. And who better to halt the Blaugrana juggernaut than, Eusebio?

Yep, that’s right. The same guy who coached Barcelona B to relegation is the man tasked with stopping them tomorrow at the Camp Nou. Admittedly, his playing staff are a little better, and far more disciplined, but it’s pretty much beside the point – this guy literally played everyone out of position on a regular basis and probably had a detrimental impact on more players than he ever helped.

Frankly, his status as a member of the Dream Team doesn’t factor into this; just because Pep Guardiola, Ronald Koeman and others have found success on the touchline, it doesn’t mean they were all given the Midas touch by Cruyff. He struggled at Celta, then struggled at Barcelona B, achieving moderate success very much in spite of himself and somehow that’s qualified him for a job at one of the country’s top-half teams.

In related news, this will be my last post for the blog, as apparently I might qualify for a La Liga coaching position too. I recommend applying as well, because if this appointment has taught us anything, it’s that their recruitment process isn’t all that rigorous.

Well, now that I’ve spent a few paragraphs disparaging his managerial ability, you can probably guarantee that Eusebio will put on a tactical masterclass tomorrow and somehow escape with a favourable result. Of course, given how we manhandled Real Madrid in their own backyard, a favourable result by comparison might be something like a three-goal defeat. Loses 0-3, still technically better than Real – that’d be a great tagline for Eusebio really.

Barcelona have no new injury concerns to worry about, so expect another strong selection. Claudio Bravo will start in goal, and while last week was his first clean sheet in a while, the quality of his performance will come as no surprise to fans of either club; of course, he was club captain at Real Sociedad prior to joining the Blaugrana, where he excelled in last year’s title win. Rumours of him leaving are also terrible, and arguably as stupid as those about Messi, but that’s a story for another time.

In defense, Dani Alves is all we’ve really got at right-back until January when Aleix Vidal is cleared for action by FIFA, so the Brazilian will start. Jordi Alba will likely start on the opposite flank, and I suspect that Marc Bartra might get a game after sitting the last two out of the squad and on the bench respectively. We’ve seen Jeremy Mathieu and Thomas Vermaelen; now give us Bartra. Of course, Gerard Pique will round off the defense.

In midfield, Sergio Busquets got a half to rest in midweek, so he’ll start with some fresh legs ready to dominate the midfield. Luckily, he won’t have to do it alone either, because Sergi Roberto and Ivan Rakitic will be there to help him and we’ve seen just how awesome each of them can be – and in Sergi’s case, have been in recent matches.

Oh, and it helps that we have those guys upfront. Lionel Messi isn’t 100%, but he’s a genius anyway, so could easily score or assist a few goals on his own, while Neymar is experiencing a dreadful goal drought having not scored for an entire game. Ergo, look for him to compensate with a brace or something. Then there’s Luis Suarez, who seems to be compensating for his trademark teeth by bagging himself a tonne of braces just this past week alone. It’s too late for you Luisito, but carry on anyway, just in case.

REAL SOCIEDAD

Former Galactico midfielder, Asier Illarremendi is suspended and so joins a long list of Sociedad absentees including Markel Bergara, Ion Ansotegi, Joseba Zaldua and Chory Castro – the latter three of whom were merely dropped for tomorrow’s trip to Catalunya. Having only taken charge of one match thus far, it’s difficult to know what Eusebio might be planning – or for him to have gathered much of an idea about who he can, and cannot trust in a game of this magnitude.

However, if last week’s win over Sevilla is anything to go by, expect a heavy dose of pressure from the frontline and attacking midfield, coupled with a disciplined, well-coordinated defensive effort at the back. A lot will ride on the shoulders of Imanol Agirretxe, who only trails Luis Suarez and Neymar in the race for Pichichi with nine goals to his name so far this campaign.

La Liga: FC Barcelona vs Real Sociedad: Predict the Score

A chance for you to predict the score of this afternoon's La Liga clash between Barcelona and Real Sociedad

Another landslide win? Certainly that's what the bookies are suggesting today as Barcelona prepare to welcome Real Sociedad to the Camp Nou. After utterly destroying both Real Madrid and AS Roma in the past week, it's only logical to assume that a similar fate would await an under-performing Sociedad. However, with the appointment of a new coach in the form of former Barça B manager, Eusebio Sacristan, La Real look as though they might be ready to turn a corner.

In his first match in charge, Sociedad comfortably defeated Sevilla at the Anoeta, and Imanol Agirretxe continued his fine start to the season with the second goal in that victory. It brought his tally up to nine goals on the season, a total that is only bettered by Luis Suarez and Neymar. The Basque forward is essentially playing like Aritz Aduriz, and we all know how much trouble he has caused us in the past.

Equally, Sociedad have always been something of a 'bogey' team for the Blaugrana; last year's defeat at the Anoeta, and a humbling loss at the same venue a year prior to that. Then again, our troubles only become apparent in the Basque Country -- Barça have won their last 18 home matches against Sociedad, in a streak that stretches all the way back to 1995. In to other words, Barcelona have never drawn or lost to Sociedad at the Camp Nou in my lifetime.

You know what? I don't expect them to start today. Predict the score of tonight's match by commenting with your prediction below. Best of luck!
