FIFA World Cup: 30 June 2014: Live Thread

A live thread for day three of the FIFA World Cup knockout stages

Another day, another couple of great games at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. We were so close to a couple of shock results too, but on both occasions, the favourites salvaged a late result. First we saw Holland come within minutes of elimination, only to overturn a one-goal deficit and defeat a resilient Mexico defense, albeit courtesy of a suspicious fall from renowned fair-play advocate, Arjen Robben. Then in the evening kick-off, Costa Rica nearly gave up a one-goal lead against Greece, only to survive thanks to the heroics of Levante keeper, Keylor Navas, who shone all throughout the 120 minutes and in the penalty shoot-out.

Costa Rica will square off against Holland in the quarter-finals at the end of the week, but before then, we must find out the identity of the final four quarter-finalists:

France vs Nigeria, Kickoff: 6pm CET

France stormed through their group to emerge as one of the tournament's real dark horses, devastating a number of teams with their lightning fast counter-attack. Nigeria on the other hand stumbled out of Argentina's group as entirely unconvincing runners-up. It's a mismatch on paper. It's a mismatch in the form guide, but who knows what will happen. France have a tendency to implode when you least expect it, and have stumbled against African teams in previous World Cups. So, while they might be clear favourites, don't rule out Nigeria just yet...

Germany vs Algeria, Kickoff: 10pm CET

Yes, Algeria weren't tipped to reach the knockout stages, but let's be honest -- Group H was probably the weakest in this World Cup. Belgium topped the group playing poor football, so why are we surprised that a side like Algeria made it out? However, they aren't facing South Korea anymore -- this is Germany, the real deal. Let's see how Algeria cope with that threat.

Here's hoping for another great day of football. Enjoy!

FIFA World Cup: 29 June 2014: Live Thread

A live thread for day two of the FIFA World Cup knockout stages

Man, what a day of football yesterday was. Things kicked off with a brilliant game between Brazil and Chile, and even after 120 minutes the two sides couldn't be separated. David Luiz and Alexis Sanchez scored for their respective sides in the first half, but that was to be all the scoring until the penalty shootout. There Brazil raced to a 2-0 after misses by Mauricio Pinilla, but going into round five teams were tied at two. Neymar stepped up first and calmly scored, but Gonzalo Jara hit the post immediately after to send Brazil to the next round.

That performance put the next game of the day, Colombia vs Uruguay, in a terrible spot as there was no way it could live up to the standard of the early one. It wasn't a bad game by any standard though as Colombia showed why many considered them a dark horse favorite, dismantling Luis Suarez-less Uruguay behind two goals from now World Cup top scorer James Rodriguez.

Those two games also set up the first Quarterfinal pair as Brazil will take on Colombia at Fortaleza of the 4th of July

Netherlands vs Mexico, Kickoff: 6pm CET

No disrespect to the two teams playing in the later of the two slots, but this earlier game promises to be the better game. A barn burner even as both teams posses explosive offenses but both at times struggled to control their opponents on the defensive side of the ball. The Dutch have a 100% record going and have impressed especially against Spain, but were also very good against Chile, while Mexico also haven't lost yet, winning the decider against Croatia and beating Cameroon while showing good defensive form in a draw against Brazil. The pressure is surely larger on Netherlands as they are considered favorites and the team spirit of Mexico could be just what could derail the Dutchmen.

Costa Rica vs Greece, Kickoff: 10pm CET

The match-up between the No.1 surprise of the World Cup against the No.2 surprise of the World Cup. In my opinion at least. Raise your hand if you had this one written in ink before the tournament began. I thought so. But despite the fact that these two teams weren't expected to make it out of Group Stage that doesn't mean this game will be a snooze fest. Costa Rica have impressed every step of the way, winning against Uruguay and Italy, and sharing the spoils with England. Greece have been less dominant, squeaking through with a last minute penalty to book a place in the Round of 16 with just four points. This just might be the first time that Costa Rica go into a World Cup match as favorites.

Here's hoping for another great day of football. Enjoy!

World Cup: Brazil vs Chile Match Review

Brazil did survive their worst performance under Big Phil Scolari. A horrible game, and yet somehow they pulled it off

I swear I'm alive. Well, I think I'm alive. I'm still not sure. Well, if it's the last time you're reading anything by me because I died, it was great to know you guys.

It's tough to be Brazilian. We live to suffer, and agonize, and ... and ... God, I still don't know what exactly to say after what transpired against Chile. It wasn't easy. It wasn't even hard. It was like you're playing Battlefield in Expert Mode without even knowing what the controls are -- I don't even know if that's the hardest Mode to play in Battlefield, or if there's an Expert Mode in BF for that matter, but screw it, you get my point.

It was painful to watch. Brazil played what was probably their worst all-around game in more than a year under Big Phil Scolari. Nothing was good. Absolutely nothing. David Luiz did score after a corner kick, but that was it. Neymar got hurt three minutes in, after he injured his knee while flopping/suffering/flopping a foul. From that point on, we didn't see the Group Stage best goalscorer Neymar. We only knew Fred was playing when he was subbed off by Jô, who did ... well, Jô Stuff.

Scolari was terrible at making subs. None of his three changes made any impact, and Brazil lost the midfield battle again. No creation, too much fouling, too much direct passes from David Luiz or Thiago Silva, too much crosses by Dani Alvenue, too much bad play.

Chile, on the other hand, played the way they should against Brazil. High press on defense, quick and efficient offense, capitalizing on the opponent's mistakes. After a miscommunication between Hulk and Marcelo on a throw-in, Alexis Sánchez scored the equalizer, and a drama was on.

The second half saw Brazil stumbling on their own mistakes. Chle O-W-N-E-D the Seleção, creating opportunities and keeping possession of the ball. The hosts tried to do something, but they were in a bad, bad day. The crowd in the Mineirão Stadium was stunned by Brazil's lack of creativity, and got more nervous as the game went into overtime.

In the overtime, Chile's legs gave up, and they did everything they could to stop Brazil and go to the penalties. They got it, and the PK's were going to be the decider.

Then, Brazil's villain in their 2010 QF loss to Netherlands became a nation's hero. Júlio César saved the day, stopping two straight penalties and giving Brazil the edge. Hulk and Willian missed their opportunities, but Neymar converted his shot. Then, Jara's final penalty for Chile hit the post, enough to put Brazil in their sixth straight quarterfinal.

They'll face Colombia next, and an entire nation hopes Brazil can do better on Friday. If today happens again, I don't know if I can live.

Barcelona Player Grades

Alexis (Chile) - 8.5: Alexis was the best player on the field. Amazing match, not only because of the goal scored, but because of all of his contributions, offensively and defensively.

Claudio Bravo (Chile) - 8: Second best player of the match, Made impressive saves during a quick stretch in the second half where Brazil created three good chances, plus saved a Hulk penalty. Nice signing, Barça.

Neymar (Brazil) - 6.5: Let's put into consideration that Neymar was hurt. Legit. He played through it. He played a bad game, but he had two great chances and scored the game-winning PK.

Dani Alves - 2.5: No, it's a PLUS-2.5. Although it could've been a minus-2.5. Alves was HORRENDOUS.

Brazil: Júlio César, Dani Alves, Thiago Silva, David Luiz, Marcelo; Luis Gustavo, Fernandinho (Ramires), Hulk, Oscar (Willian), Neymar; Fred (Jô)

Goal: David Luiz (18')

Chile: Bravo, Silva, Medel (Rojas), Jara; Isla, Aránguiz, Díaz, Mena, Vidal (Pinilla); Alexis Sánchez, Vargas (Gutiérrez)

Goal: Alexis Sánchez (32')

Penalties: Brazil 3 (David Luiz, Marcelo, Neymar), Chile 2 (Aránguiz, Díaz)

FIFA World Cup: 28 June 2014: Live Thread

A live thread for the first day of the FIFA World Cup knockout stages

The sparring is over; now it's time to get down to business in Brazil as the knockout stages of the 2014 FIFA World Cup start today in Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro. Peculiarly enough, the hosts Brazil will not be playing in Rio today at the Maracana -- instead, South American rivals Uruguay and Colombia will set foot in the hallowed home of joga bonito to battle for a place in the quarter-finals. However, Brazil will get the honour of raising the curtain on the Round of 16 in their early evening kick-off against Chile at the Estadio Mineirao.

Hands up if you're excited...

Brazil vs Chile, Kickoff: 6pm CET

Neymar versus Alexis Sanchez. Dani Alves vs Claudio Bravo -- FC Barcelona might not have the most representatives from these two teams, but they arguably have the most important. Neymar of course is the poster boy for the tournament in general, and has predictably lived up to the hype, scoring four goals in the group stage and generally dragging Brazil to top spot in Group A. He was the star, the puto jefe as Guardiola would say. Certainly, it would be a devastating blow to FIFA and the tournament if he were to depart at such an early stage. And as such, I know I'll be rooting for Neymar to progress.

That being said, Alexis Sanchez has been incredible as well. Perhaps not as decisive as his Blaugrana teammate, but impressive nonetheless -- and it would be a similar shame to see him head back to Catalunya. So, can new Barcelona signing Claudio Bravo keep Neymar at bay? Will Sanchez be able to get the better of Dani Alves and the Brazil defense? It's probably the best tie of the round, and I know I'll be glued to the TV, watching and enjoying every second.

Colombia vs Uruguay, Kickoff: 10pm CET

We can't even talk about reported Barcelona target, Luis Suarez given his ban. Juan Cuadrado probably won't sign for the Blaugrana, so there's little point in focusing on him. So, I suppose the only logical thing to do would be to focus on the football (gasp!) -- and if we're talking about football, we have to first talk about James Rodriguez. Anyone with a relatively broad knowledge of football will have known about his talents long before this tournament, but it's nice to see James making a real name for himself, outside of that hefty pricetag and move to AS Monaco.

Finally moving out of the shadow of Falcao, James has been the driving force behind Colombia's incredible group stage and it would be a surprise if he didn't muster similar heroics tonight against a Uruguay team that escaped Group D by the skin of their teeth. Ahem. Without Suarez, it's hard to take them seriously, even if they do have some good players. However, the World Cup has been full of surprises and I wouldn't bet against seeing another one tonight.

Enjoy the games!

FC Barcelona News: 27 June 2014; Barça Continue Luis Suarez Pursuit, Jeremy Mathieu Wants Transfer

Messi is also the only player who was named FIFA Man of the Match in every game.

Claudio Bravo's historic free kick | FC Barcelona

His duty, like any other keeper’s, is not to score goals but to prevent them. But in the 2009/10 season while playing for Real Sociedad in the second division, he did quite the opposite against Gimnastic Tarragona, beating rival stopper Rubén Pérez with a free kick in the finals seconds of the first half – what eventually turned out to be the winning goal! Luis Suárez conversation with Andoni Zubizarreta on FC Barcelona Rumours

We try to imagine what a conversation between Luis Suárez and Barça's front office leader Zubi would look like

Luis Suárez is a work of art. He can be one of the best strikers on the planet when his mind is into it. The problem is figuring out when his mind is going to be into football. Sometimes, even during games, he'll do something that will leave us wondering what the heck does he have in his head. He did it again, this time playing for Uruguay in an important game vs Italy in the World Cup. Until he lost his mind and, well, you know what happened.

Still, even with another showing of imature, childlike behavior, Luisito has been linked with a move to FC Barcelona, who is allegedly offering more than 60 million to Liverpool. We know that's something our own Andoni Zubizarreta would do, right?

So, we tried to imagine what a conversation between Suárez and Zubi would look like...

Zubi: Hello?

Suárez: Oh, hey, is that Zubi?

Zubi: Yes! How are you doing, Luisito?

Suárez: I'm good, getting ready for our match with Italy. You know, big game today.

Zubi: Absolutely! I will definitely watch it. I think it's going to be a nail-biter.

Suárez: Oh, I can assure you something is going to be bit tonight.

Zubi: What do you mean?

Suárez: No, nothing special. By the way, I've been listening to the rumours, and I'm really thankful to hear that you guys are thinking about me.

Zubi: Don't thank me, you deserve it! You know how our track record of going after people we don't really need works, right? You're perfect for us!

Suárez: I'm happy to hear that! You know, I'm just not happy here anymore. I've done a lot here at Liverpool, I'm very hungry and I feel like I need someone to sink my teeth into.

[Silence at the other end...]

Suárez: I mean, something!

Zubi: Okay... Uh... Yeah, we definitely think that you can do great things for us here and we're happy to know that you feel the same way.

Suárez: Yeah, I'm sure I can eat shoulders in La Liga next season. I mean, I think I should win La Liga next season! You know, my English is kind of bad. I'm from Uruguay, LOL

Zubi: Nevermind, I don't understand things half the time (laughs). Anyway, good luck tonight, show me how hungry you are!

Suárez: You got it, Zubi. Thanks a lot!

Zubi: Oh, just one more thing before I forget. Do you play center back?

Suárez: No, I'm a forward.

Zubi: Good. That's exactly what we need. I'll be in touch in a bit. Good luck!

Suárez: All right...................

This explains a lot, doesn't it?

FC Barcelona News: 26 June 2014; Lionel Messi Leads Argentina to Top of Group F, Six Barça Players Left in World Cup

Messi and Mascherano, group winners with Argentina (2-3) | FC Barcelona

This Wednesday Leo Messi and Javier Mascherano’s Argentina closed out the group stage of the World Cup with a perfect record of three wins from three matches. The men managed by Alejandro Sabella defeated Nigeria by 2 to 3 which saw Messi, who scored a brace, put in a stellar performance. Nigeria equalised twice, but a goal from Rojo on 50 minutes sealed the three points.

FC Barcelona's second Chilean and sixth South American keeper | FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona’s long history is full of players who are from all around the world. Curiously, no Chilean had played for the Club until 2011, when Alexis Sánchez was signed from Udinese. Now, in addition to Alexis, we add Claudio Bravo.

Ten things you should know about Claudio Bravo | FC Barcelona

Claudio Bravo came up through the ranks at Colo-Colo in Buin, Chile. He was originally a defender until he asked his coach for the chance to try out as goalkeeper instead. He soon impressed in his new position, and made his Chilean League debut in 2002 at the age of 19.

Real Madrid makes 57.4 million in Champions League; FC Barcelona ranks Eighth

The UEFA Champions League champions Real Madrid made a lot of money for winning the tournament. Barça got a little richer, too

It turns out that winning the UEFA Champions League not only gives you a trophy with two big ears. It also gives you TONS of money.

UEFA has released on Wednesday the ammount of revenue generated by the 32 clubs involved in the tournament for the 2013-14 season, and not surprisingly, the champs made the most money. Real Madrid, winners of their tenth UCL trophy, received a total of 57.4 million euros, for their record in the group stage, national and international TV and publicity deals (known as "market pool") and, of course, a 10.5 million bonus for winning 'La Décima'.

In second on the list comes Paris Saint-Germain, despite being knocked out on the quarterfinal. They made 54.4 million, 34 of them coming from the 'market pool', the most TV money of any of the 32 teams who played the UCL. That can be atributed to PSG being the most popular team from France on the tournament, since Olympique Marseille doesn't have the same star-power and media coverage.

FC Barcelona, knocked out by Atletico Madrid in the quarterfinal, ranks eighth on the revenue list, making a total of £42 million. Of the Spanish teams competing in the UCL, Barça was the one who made more money out of TV deals (£21M), more than Madrid, Atlético, and Real Sociedad.

Here's the list of the Top 10:

1. Real Madrid (ESP) £57.414.00

2. PSG (FRA) £54.417.000

3. Atlético Madrid (ESP) £50.048.000

4. Manchester United (ENG) £44.775.000

5. Bayern München (GER) £44.616.000

6. Chelsea FC (ENG) £43.391.000

7. Juventus (ITA) £43.098.000

8. FC Barcelona (ESP) £41.975.000

9. Napoli (ITA) £38.598.000

10. AC Milan (ITA) 37.599.000

World Cup: Argentina Defeat Nigeria, But How Long Can they Rely on Lionel Messi?

Argentina secured a 3-2 victory over Nigeria, topping their group and heading into the next round. But, the team has not given Lionel Messi enough support.

Messidependencia. That's what many called FC Barcelona's crisis at various points the past few years. The height of it was maybe two seasons back, when a couple young nobodies like Isaac Cuenca and Cristian Tello were two of Messi's primary offensive partners. He had to do it all himself, almost.

At that time, many were dissatisfied with his work for the Argentine national team. "He's more Catalan than Argentine," his detractors would sneer. "He just doesn't try for the national team."

How times have changed.

Messi is currently on fire for Argentina, scoring 24 in the past 23 games. He's continued that form into the World Cup. Today, with a brace in about an hour of game play, Messi tied his Barcelona teammate Neymar in the race for the Golden Boot.

More importantly, he made the difference again, as Argentina defeated Nigeria 3-2. Marcos Rojo, who has been surprisingly good from left-back, became the first Argentine besides Messi to score in Brazil.

Still, Argentina did not really silence the critics. They gave up two goals to Nigeria, hardly an impressive defensive performance.

And in the context of their first two matches, there's not much reassurance. It's not just that Messi has scored the majority of Argentina's goal. It's how he has scored them - doing it mostly without help. Messidependencia. It's asking for trouble.

Argentina played 4-3-3 using their expected lineup. Nigeria had not conceded all tournament long, the only team at that point still to concede. It took Messi all of 3 minutes to change that.

Angel Di Maria received a deep pass on the right flank and dribbled into the box. Nigeria's star GK Vicent Enyeama kept it out, with the aid of the post, but it bounced temptingly in front of his goal. Messi was the quickest, and he thumped the ball in as two Nigerian defenders clattered into each other attempting a block.

Yet, Nigeria drew level just a minute later. Pablo Zabaleta has not had a great World Cup and he could not contain Ahmed Musa, who rifled a shot into the net.

In the 36th minute, Sergio Aguero left with an injury, which just means Argentina have one less potential scorer, at least for now. But maybe it's a blessing in disguise. Ezequiel Lavezzi, the forward most likely to replace him, is not nearly as clinical but he can bring width and workrate to the side.

Messi would warn Enyeama with a long range free kick, but the Nigerian swept it aside. However, in the 45th minute, Messi got another chance and this time he did not miss, firing a rocket into the corner.

Argentina's defense still looked fragile in the second half, and Musa again was through on goal. This time his task was even easier, and he made no mistake. The score was 2-2.

With the score tied, Argentina again benefitted from a deadball situation. Ezequiel Garay nodded a corner kick down into the path of Rojo, who was able to redirect it past Enyeama for the Albiceleste to take the lead once again, 3-2.

With the job essentially done - Argentina needed only a draw to win the group - Messi was withdrawn for Ricky Alvarez, to rest him for the knockout phase.

Given how heavily Argentina have relied on him in the first stage, Messi might just need it if he's to make another supreme effort.

FIFA World Cup: 25 June 2014: Live Thread

Live thread for the World Cup matches played on the fourteenth day of the 2014 World Cup

Another two Round of 16 pairs have been set as Costa Rica will face Greece who earned a second place finish with a last minute penalty against Ivory Coast while Colombia will take on Uruguay who in a head to head match-up took a bite out if Italy's World Cup hopes.

Another four games are on the schedule today, and six teams will be fighting out for three available spots in the next round. Argentina are the only team that have already clinched a spot in the Round of 16, while Bosnia and Herzegovina can't make it out of the Group Stage anymore.

Nigeria vs Argentina, Kickoff: 6pm CET

Nigeria have fate in their own hands as all they need is a point for them to finish in second place, but the African side can still top the group if they manage to overcome the strong yet unconvincing Argentinians. Nigeria can also advance if they lose, but for that to happen Iran mustn't win by more goals than Nigeria loses by. Argentina will look to hold on to the first place as that would most certainly see them avoid France who look set to top Group E.

Bosnia and Herzegovina vs Iran, Kickoff: 6pm CET

After their unlucky and by most accounts unfair loss to Nigeria, Bosnia has nothing left to play for unless to restore some pride and finish their first World Cup appearance on a positive note. Iran on the other hand can still hope for a place in the next round, but they desperately need a win to do so and Argentina must beat Nigeria. Still, that scenario is difficult to imagine as I full expect Bosnia and Herzegovina to go out on the pitch and demolish Iran.

Honduras vs Switzerland, Kickoff: 10pm CET

Officially, nothing in Group E is set, but with the impressive goal difference of France it's highly unlikely that France wouldn't top the group. The second place though is up for grabs as Honduras, Switzerland and Ecuador all can still advance. Honduras, however, are in the worst spot, sitting fourth without any points and even a win wouldn't guarantee them a second place finish. Heck, they could still place fourth even with the three points. Switzerland also aren't guaranteed a promotion with a win as an Ecuador win would end the European side's hopes.

Ecuador vs France, Kickoff: 10 pm CET

As I said above, a miracle would have to happen for France not to top the group, Ecuador on the other hand are in the driver's seat, currently sitting in second place. Even a loss could see Ecuador finish in second place, but in that case Honduras mustn't beat Switzerland by more than three goals (if Ecuador loses by one). On the other hand, Ecuador could drop down to third even if they beat France if Switzerland wins against Honduras by more than three goals (if Ecuador wins by one).

In any way, Group E promises tons of twists and turns while Group F is a bit more straightforward. Enjoy!

Official: Claudio Bravo Joins FC Barcelona

Barça has officially announced the signing of former Real Sociedad and current Chile International goalkeeper, Claudio Bravo

FC Barcelona has officially signed its two new goalkeepers for the future. Marc-André ter Stegen is already a Blaugrana for more than a month, and his backup was officially annonced on Wednesday.

It's Claudio Bravo. The former Real Sociedad GK and current Chile captain in the World Cup comes in for a fee of about £12 million, and will sign a four-year contract. Bravo, 31, is a starting goalie since 2002, when he was promoted from Chile's Colo-Colo youth system. He joined the big leagues at 19 years old, an has since impressed with his skills, inside and outside of the pitch. He was Colo-Colo's captain until 2006, when he joined the Basques. At Sociedad, Bravo became a fan-favorite and the team's leader and captain, becoming the second non-national with most matches played, and the third GK in Sociedad history with most appearances between the goalposts.

Bravo is known from his leadership, how he is respected by all of his peers on the squad, and his calmness. He's been described by Colo-Colo players as the "perfect teammate", which, combined with his experience, should help a lot as Ter Stegen develops as Barça's starting goalkeeper. Bravo will also add world-class quality skills to the backup job, something the Blaugrana didn't quite have with Jose Pinto in the years before.

The goalie becomes the second Chile player in Barça history, along with his buddy Alexis Sánchez. Bravo will sign his agreement and be presented as the newest Barcelona signing immediately after the end of the World Cup .

Xavi Hernández Departs: A Tribute To FC Barcelona's Greatest Ever Player

After 784 appearances, 87 goals and 14 major honours, Xavi's FC Barcelona career has finally come to a close. There will never be another quite like him...

After a summer in which many eras have come to a close at the Camp Nou and in Spain, no departure leaves a void as gaping as that of Xavi Hernández. Nearly sixteen years after making a scoring debut away to Real Mallorca, the midfield maestro walks away from FC Barcelona not just as its all-time record appearance maker and its most decorated player but as the club’s most iconic symbol: the La Masia graduate from Terrassa whose refined style revolutionised football and left him with a strong claim to being the sport’s greatest ever player.

It is difficult to explain just how much Xavi has achieved during his career, nor how improbable it seemed at the start. He arrived at a time when football’s tactical norms were rapidly moving away from his style of football. He was small, not particularly fast and never capable of dominating opponents by sheer power alone. He was never going to be seen galloping fifty yards with the ball at his feet, muscling off defenders en route to goal. Despite this, he leaves a legacy perhaps greater than that of any other footballer.

Of course, it would be wrong to say that Xavi invented pass-and-move football. It was around for decades before him and it will not go away now he’s gone. That said, no-one else perfected the art like he did. He is probably the best passer in the game’s history and, as is often overlooked, its greatest mover.

Once Luis Aragonés and Pep Guardiola identified the latter characteristic and moved him forward into his now familiar free-roaming role, he was near unplayable for five years – five years which changed football forever. Nowadays, every young footballer is taught to play like Xavi, regardless of their position. Find space, receive the ball, give it to someone else. Repeat. And repeat. And repeat. And repeat...

"That's what I do: look for spaces," he told Sid Lowe during an interview for the Guardian in 2011. "All day. I'm always looking. All day, all day. [Xavi starts gesturing as if he is looking around, swinging his head]. Here? No. There? No. People who haven't played don't always realise how hard that is. Space, space, space. It's like being on the PlayStation. I think shit, the defender's here, play it there. I see the space and pass. That's what I do."

His ability to glide across the pitch for ninety minutes, covering a considerably greater distance than everyone else on it, was the foundation of his skillset. It allowed him the chance to take possession of the ball more often than any other player and to play more intelligent, inventive and incisive passes than they could ever dream of trying.

The simplicity and persistence of his passing game made it unstoppable. All manner of complicated tactical plans were hatched to try and stop him but, until age finally caught up with him, no-one ever could. There would always be space somewhere on the pitch and Xavi would always find it. The best anyone could do was tacitly concede defeat and put a wall of ten men between Xavi and the goal, hoping that by doing so they could at least keep the score respectable.

In a globalised age in which every tiny mistake is not just seen all over the world but magnified, every top-level footballer must be near perfect. They are obliged to maintain Herculean levels of fitness and technique and are subjected to constant and rigorous statistical analysis. Xavi’s individual figures – number of passes attempted, passes completed, distance covered, assists/key passes provided – have consistently ranked him above everyone else. As ever, though, the stats only ever told half the story.

As anyone who saw him play can attest, Xavi’s style of play was as beautiful as it was productive. YouTube is full of ‘Xavi’s Best Passes’ compilations. One could debate which was his best assist all day. The first time I saw him play in person in 2010, he combined with Andrés Iniesta for a double-backheel one-two in the middle of the pitch that received a roar as loud as any of the five goals scored that night. I couldn’t join in with the cheers, though – my breath had been taken away.

It would be a mistake for Barcelona’s new manager, Luis Enrique – as well as whoever takes over from Vicente Del Bosque with the Spanish national team – to try and find someone to replace Xavi. Such a talent comes along once in a lifetime. They must move on and maximise the abilities of the players they now have.

Having said that, it would also be wrong for them to stray too far away from the basic principles of tiki-taka, the style with which his name will always be synonymous. The problem is not that tiki-taka has become outmoded – it is more that Xavi’s advancing age meant that he could not do the pressing required to make it work. While both teams will miss his presence more than words can say, the mouth-watering reserves of talent they possess means that neither is finished now that he is.

Xavi may never have been as gloriously spectacular as the likes of Diego Maradona, Pelé or Lionel Messi, but he leaves Barcelona and Spain every bit as great. He was the most important player in the greatest club side ever assembled; the heartbeat of the most successful international team of all-time; a World Cup winner; a two-time European Championship Winner; a three-time Champions League winner; the standard-bearer for a style of play that re-shaped the global game.

The unprecedented success he enjoyed means that his influence will be felt on almost every game at football’s top-level for as long as the sport is played. No other player can say that.

Adéu, Xavi. Gràcies per tot.

World Cup: Cameroon vs Brazil Match Review

After a hard-fought tie with Mexico, Brazil confirmed their favorite status and cruised through Cameroon in a dominant 4-1 win, that saw Neymar at his best

FIRST HALF

The first 45 minutes were loaded of action from both teams. Even being eliminated and full of lineup changes, Cameroon came to play and gave Brazil a hard time for a while, with dangerous crosses and shots from outside the box. The Indomitable Lions were also a little violent, commiting hard fouls and trying to break Brazil's balance. Neymar, especially, was the target of Cameroon's tackles. Not just tackles, but unnecessary cheap shots after the play ended just to make Neymar angry.

And they got Neymar angry. Not a good idea, though. Just a couple of minutes after being shoved, he put Brazil ahead. Luis Gustavo (player of the match BY FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR) pulled off a beautiful cross that came right into Neymar's right foot. Boom. 1-0.

A little bit later, Cameroon scared Brazil. Taking advantage of the Dani Alves 'Alvenue', Nyom crossed from the left, no Brazilian defender got to the ball, and Matip scored the equalizer.

The drama didn't last long, though. Eight minutes later, Neymar scored his second goal of the match, in good old Neymar fashion, facing the defender, doing a quick cut to the right foot and striking from close range. 2-1 and Brazil regained full control of the match.

SECOND HALF

Big Phil Scolari decided to make a change in Brazil during halftime. Paulinho, who had a terrible performance in the first 45 minutes, came off for Fernandinho. And the Manchester City's midfielder took over and probably solidified himself as the starter for the rest of the tournament. He gave Brazil something they didn't have in neither of their first two games: midfield control. The Seleção finally had somebody to run the show, move the ball from side to side and orchestrate the offense. The Brazuca got stuck in the CBs feet too much in the first half, but Fernandinho changed that and created huge opportunities for himself and others.

With more ball possession and better pass accuracy, Brazil dominated the rest of the game, and quickly scored the third goal. Fred, the invisible Brazilian center-forward, finally appeared to complete a cross from Marcelo and make the score 3-1 for the Seleção.

Cameroon spent too much energy defending, and had no gas to do any harm on the offensive end. Brazil continued to control the game and tried to score another goal. And they did it, when Fernandinho saw himself alone at the box to score the fourth.

In the end, a dominant, important victory to guarantee the first place in Group A for the hosts. Brazil will now face Chile at the Round of 16, next Saturday. We will see Neymar vs Alexis, and this should be fun.

Interesting Neymar Facts:

  • With the two goals scored against Cameroon, Neymar is the scoring leader of the World Cup so far, with four total. He is also the first Brazilian to score four goals in a single World Cup since Ronaldo did it in 2002.

  • Neymar surpassed former Barça legends Rivaldo and Ronaldinho and became the sixth best scorer in Brazil international history, with 35 goals in 52 games.

  • Neymar became the second youngest Brazilian ever to reach 35 goals. First on the list? The best player ever, Pelé, who scored 38 at age 22.

Brazil: Júlio César; Dani Alves, Thiago Silva, David Luiz, Marcelo; Luis Gustavo, Paulinho (Fernandinho), Hulk (Ramires), Oscar, Neymar (Willian); Fred.

Goals: Neymar (17', 34'), Fred (49'), Fernandinho (84')

Cameroon: Itandje; Nyom, N'Koulou, Matip, Bedimo; Mbia, Moukandjo (Salli), Enoh, N'Guemó, Choupo-Moting (Makoun), Aboubakar (Webó)

Goals: Matip (26')

Report: Jeremy Mathieu meets with Valencia, asks for FC Barcelona Transfer

Reports from Spain claim that center-back Jeremy Mathieu met with Valencia general manager to ask for a transfer to Barça

The search for a new center-back has turned into a soap opera for Barcelona. It has become difficult since Barça decided to distract themselves with signings that don't really fit the team needs, like old fullbacks and incredibly expensive strikers.

Now, there is hope that an actual good and reliable CB will be a Blaugrana next season. That's what he wants, at least.

Jeremy Mathieu, a 30-year-old defender that always did a great job at Valencia, has been linked to Barcelona for a long time now, and with Carles Puyol retirement, combined with new manager Luis Enrique's desire to use Javier Mascherano as a defensive midfielder, is almost a no-brainer for a replacement.

And he wants to do it, according to a report from Spanish newspaper SuperDeporte. Mathieu has reportedley met with Valencia's general manager, Rufete, to ask for a Barcelona transfer. Jeremy insisted that he wants to be a Blaugrana, and asked Rufete to consider their offer. Valencia refused to sell Mathieu after a meeting with Barça officials last week.

Barça reportedly offered less than Mathieu's buyout fee, and Valencia doesn't want to sell because there are a lot of years left in Mathieu's contract and they will not negotiate if the Blaugrana do not completely buy him out. Barcelona's hope is that Jeremy's desire to leave Valencia can finally convince the club.

So, let me understand this. Barça doesn't want to pay £8 million for Mathieu, but they're willing to spend 80M on Luis Suárez, a guy they don't really need?

Ok, Zubi probably knows what he is doing...
