A move is getting closer

Barcelona hope to announce Xavi as the club’s new manager on Friday, according to the latest reports.

Vice president Rafa Yuste and director of football Mateu Alemany are in Doha to do the deal, while Xavi is believed to have met with Al Sadd owner Mohamad bin Khalifa al Thani on Thursday to try and seal his exit from the club.

Xavi made it clear on Wednesday, after Al Sadd had insisted they had no intention of letting him leave, that he feels the time is right to finally head home. The former midfielder said it would be “spectacular” to return to the Camp Nou and take charge of the team.

Mundo Deportivo are now reporting there will be one final meeting on Friday to sort out Xavi’s exit, and if an agreement can’t be reached by all then Barca may just end paying his €5 million release clause.

Catalunya Radio have a similar report and believe an official announcement will be made tomorrow as the deal is close. Barca have apparently offered a friendly with Al Sadd in Doha or even in the Gamper Trophy as an alternative to paying the release clause.

Over at Diario AS the word is that Xavi could even be willing pay some of the release clause out of his own pocket if necessary.

Al Sadd are said to be “astonished” that Joan Laporta didn’t make the trip to Qatar but talks will continue on Friday with Xavi “convinced” the club will honor a gentleman’s agreement to let him leave if Barca ever came calling.
