Kevin-Prince Boateng and Jeison Murillo have arrived on loan
It’s difficult to place Kevin-Prince Boateng in the category of a good signing. The Ghanaian has had a bit of a journeyman career, shuttling between clubs, never really impressing anywhere. His more recent spells at Las Palmas and Sassuolo have been acceptable but a major chunk of his skill-set is inconsistent.
The player may not be the signing we had all hoped for, but the idea that Barcelona is re-evaluating their transfer policy is good news. The club has invested in decent players this January, while avoiding long-term investments.
Jeison Murillo and Kevin-Prince Boateng are not world class but they are certainly on low wages with the potential to come in handy in case of injuries. Their contribution will be more or less from the bench and in rotation.
Valverde has already entrusted Murillo with a start and the Colombian hasn’t disappointed so far. Boateng, however, will have a harder time cracking the first team with a stacked front-line.
Does Boateng’s signing affect the future of Malcom? Probably. Is he better than the Brazilian? Probably not. But the idea that the club is investing with caution brings an unfamiliar sense of comfort lost to Cules in recent times.
This new approach is far from the erratic transfer business done in the last few years that lacked a sense of direction and approach, while costing the club big bucks.
Hopefully, this trend of intelligent investing is only the beginning and not a short-term solution like the duo.
