Rose warns Barca that CL clash is a must-win for Spurs

Spurs were beaten by Inter Milan last time out

Tottenham defender Danny Rose has warned Barcelona that Spurs can’t afford to lose their Champions League clash at Wembley on Wednesday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side suffered heartbreak in their opener against Inter Milan. They took the lead through Christian Eriksen, but two late goals condemned them to defeat.

Another defeat on Wednesday would put a huge dent in their hopes of qualifying for the knockout round, and Rose says they will be going for the win.

“It’s a massive game,” he said.

”We have to win. We’re fully aware of that. We’re all bitterly disappointed from how the Milan game finished and no mistakes, we have to win on Wednesday.”

Spurs face a Barcelona side that is having a bit of a wobble and have gone three games without a win in La Liga.

They did, however, kick off their Champions League campaign with a 4-0 win over PSV Eindhoven and do have fond memories of Wembley Stadium of course.

Jordi Alba: It’s clear we must make changes

But the defender says there’s no need to panic

Jordi Alba says it’s clear Barcelona need to make changes after going three games without a win in La Liga.

After a good start, Barcelona have now dropped points against Girona, Leganes and Athletic Bilbao, although Alba is not too worried by their form.

“That’s three games without winning,” he said. “It’s clear that we have to make changes to try and get three points.

”We have to look at a lot of things. But the team tried, we just lacked a little luck. We got into the box a lot and the ball didn’t want to go in.

”There’s no need for alarms. I think it’s clear we’re not satisfied with the results and that we can all give more.

“The season is just getting started. Despite the three slip-ups, we’re still up there and there’s a long way to go. We all have to give a lot more.”

Ter Stegen says he wants to create more history after 150th outing

The German made his 150th appearance on Saturday

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen made his 150th appearance for the club on Saturday and has been given a special shirt to commemorate the landmark.

The German has proved to be a simply brilliant signing since joining from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2014 and gave thanks for all the support he’s received during his time at the club.

Ter Stegen has developed into one of the best goalkeepers in the world at Barcelona and, at 26, we may not even have seen the best of him yet.

Does Gerard Piqué Need a Rest?

The defender has not covered himself in glory lately, yet he is playing every minute

Gerard Piqué has had a recent run of mistakes that has some fans pulling hair out. The defender has had good moments, too, of course, including a goal against Girona. But the 31-year-old has had lapses that are hard to excuse, including a terrible pass against Leganés which gifted them the go-ahead goal.

Yet there is a curious stat here too: the defender has completed every single minute of the season, something only matched by the keeper, Marc-André ter Stegen.

True, Piqué had the international break off as he retired from international duty. But the reality is he has played quite a lot, even then. Messi and Alba also had the international break off, for example, and they have been rested from time to time.

Remember, sometimes mental mistakes are a product of a slight lack of physical sharpness.

Ernesto Valverde may be resistant to sub him off as his backup centerbacks are all left-footed. But he also doesn’t have a natural left-back in the senior squad, and Alba got time off. Plus, the other central defenders all have quality: Clément Lenglet and Thomas Vermaelen are good enough to play for Barcelona, or at least one would think. Perhaps there are reasons to prefer a right-footed defender on the right, but it’s not some sort of unbreakable rule.

On the other hand, there’s the argument that any player making this many crucial mistakes should be benched just due to performance. That is, if only to show that no one’s job is entirely safe and everyone must work hard.

Piqué has been one of Barcelona’s best players for a long time. He captained them today. But even he can go off form. How should this situation be handled?

Alcacer the hero again with Dortmund double

The striker came off the bench to seal a comeback win

Paco Alcacer was the match-winner again for Borussia Dortmund, as he made only his second appearance for the Bundesliga side on Saturday.

Dortmund were 2-0 down away to Bayer Leverkusen when Alcacer entered the fray just after the hour mark, as he replaced Maximilian Philipp.

The striker helped change the game in Dortmund’s favour with goals from Jacob Bruun Larsen and Marco Reus making it 2-2.

Alcacer then won the game with two late goals to send Dortmund above Bayern Munich and top of the table in Germany.

Paco now has three goals in two substitute appearances for Dortmund and certainly seems to be enjoying himself in Germany.

FC Barcelona 1-1 Athletic Club: Point saved at Camp Nou | FC Barcelona
The Catalans would have loved to celebrate what is now their longest unbeaten stretch at home (40 games) since 1993 with a win, and did everything and more to warrant the three points. But lady luck turned her back on the blaugrana this Saturday afternoon and they had to settle for a frustrating draw.

HIGHLIGHTS: Barça v Athletic | FC Barcelona
The game between FC Barcelona and Athletic Club ended in a 1-1 at Camp Nou in week 7 of the league. A goal from De Marcos in the first half gave the visitors the lead at half time but an equaliser in the 84th minute from substitute Munir handed Ernesto Valverde’s team a point.

Ernesto Valverde: ‘We need to fight our way out of this bad run’ | FC Barcelona
Speaking after today’s 1-1 draw at home to Athletic Club, Barça coach Ernesto Valverde admitted that “we need to fight our way out of this bad run, lift our heads up and keep looking forwards. This has been a difficult week. We were hoping to get nine points and we’ve only got two.”

Lionel Messi: ‘It’s still early days’ | FC Barcelona
Lionel Messi used the Argentinian term empipado, which means something akin to ‘stuffed’, to describe the mood among the squad after failing to win for the third time in a row, but insists that they are keeping calm about things. “There’s no anxiety” he said after the 1-1 draw with Athletic Club. “There are a lot of things that we need to improve but this is just the start of a very long league season.”

Bad luck for Messi: Seven shots off the woodwork in nine games | Marca
Barcelona star Lionel Messi went through another game on Saturday against Athletic at the Camp Nou in which he was frustrated and denied by the woodwork. Incredibly, it is the seventh time this season that is has happened to him.

Don’t mess with Messi! Valverde playing with fire by resting Barcelona ace | Goal
They are faltering – collectively and individually – and the only aspect keeping them on the requisite level is Messi. In that regard, it was a strange decision from Valverde to leave him out. Barca needed to bounce back after their midweek loss to Leganes; surely the most productive thing to do would be to play Messi, win convincingly and ensure confidence is high going into Wednesday. Instead, Valverde has invited more criticism and more pressure.

Marc-André ter Stegen: 150 official games for Barça | FC Barcelona
Marc-André ter Stegen is celebrating. Playing in the match against Athletic Club which ended in a 1-1 draw at Camp Nou meant that the German goalkeeper had reached his 150th game for Barça. The goalkeeper made his debut on September 17, 2014 against Apoel, and his performances since have endeared him to all Barça fans.

Alba on dropped points, improvements and benching Messi | Sport
“That’s three games without winning,” Alba told reporters. “It’s clear that we have to make changes to try and get three points. We have to look at a lot of things. But the team tried, we just lacked a little luck. We got into the box a lot and the ball didn’t want to go in.

Injured Sergi Roberto to miss at least one game | FC Barcelona
Sergi Roberto has pulled the rectus femoris muscle in his right thigh during Saturday’s game with Athletic Club and post-match examinations have determined that he will be unable to play in the Champions League game with Tottenham Hotspur later this week.

Barça B 2-1 UE Olot: First win in the Miniestadi | FC Barcelona
Barça B have six points from their last two games after seeing off UE Olot at the Miniestadi thanks to two goals in the opening ten minutes. It was an intense, quality showing from the reserves, with Chumi getting them off to the perfect start and a hard-working Abel Ruiz very much putting them in the driving seat with a quick second.

The goalkeeper tells fans to remain positive

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen sent a message to supporters after Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao at the Camp Nou.

The German goalkeeper made his 150th appearance for the club during the game but didn’t seem to be too happy with his own performance.

Barcelona are back in action on Wednesday night when they face Tottenham in the Champions League. Spurs were beaten 2-1 at Inter Milan on the opening match day.

Messi says Barcelona have to improve defensively

The captain says they have the players to be a ‘great team’

Lionel Messi offered his thoughts after Saturday’s disappointing draw with Athletic Bilbao at the Camp Nou.

Ernesto Valverde’s side dropped points for the third game in a row and have now gone five La Liga games without keeping a clean sheet.

The captain knows they have a problem defensively and called on his side to tighten up at the back.

“We’re aware we have to be stronger in defence. We’re coming from a season when it was difficult to score against us and now it’s taking very little for [the opposition] to score. We have to improve and get stronger in defence, that’s the most important thing.”

”We have the squad and the players to be a great team, to be a strong team and to not depend on anyone.his is Barca. We have enough players to not depend on one. These results have been a shame, but we have to stay calm because it’s a long season.

“The results are a shame but the season’s just getting stared. We have to keep on going, looking forward, thinking about Wednesday, when we have another tough game in a difficult Champions League group. We have to improve in a lot of things, but we can stay calm because thing are just beginning.”

Barcelona’s woodwork curse shows no sign of ending

If only the goal were just a tiny bit bigger...

Barcelona were the kings of hitting the woodwork last season, and it’s turning into a similar story in this campaign.

Ernesto Valverde’s side have already hit the woodwork eight times in seven matches (six of which have come from Lionel Messi efforts).

Philippe Coutinho and Messi were the latest culprits, as they both hit the woodwork in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Athletic.

The Brazilian looked destined to equalise from an Ousmane Dembele cross but hit the bar, while Messi hit the post after some good work from Jordi Alba.

Barcelona confirm Sergi Roberto out of Spurs clash

The versatile star will miss the game at Wembley

Barcelona have confirmed that Sergi Roberto will miss Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Tottenham at Wembley Stadium due to injury.

The 26-year-old was forced off early in the second half of Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao with a problem which will rule him out for at least one match.

His injury makes it almost certain that Nelson Semedo will play at right-back against Spurs, as Barcelona aim to put a poor run of form behind them.

Spurs warmed up for Wednesday’s game with a 2-0 victory at Huddersfield Town thanks to two goals from captain Harry Kane.

Tottenham’s Dele Alli to Miss Barcelona Clash

The midfielder has a hamstring problem

Tottenham Hotspur’s Dele Alli will not play Wednesday against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League, according to the BBC. The midfielder has a recurring hamstring problem and his return date is unclear. Jan Vertonghen and Moussa Dembélé were taken off at halftime in Spur’s win on Huddersfield yesterday, though it remains to be seen if they have muscular injures.

Harry Winks and Victor Wanyama came on at halftime during that match and both could be starters against the blaugrana.

Tottenham are looking to get back into winning ways in Europe after an opening group stage loss against Inter Milan. Barcelona, for their part, only salvaged a 1-1 draw against Athletic Club Bilbao today, but they did win their first group stage match against PSV Eindhoven at the Camp Nou.

Ernesto Valverde Must Correct Mistakes as Difficult Period Begins

Barcelona’s recent poor form is a huge concern given the upcoming calendar

FC Barcelona once struggled. It’s become too common this season for Ernesto Valverde’s men to be pushing late on either with a slim lead or in need of a goal to salvage a result. Munir El Haddadi was a bit of an unorthodox substitution, but he did get Barcelona’s goal to at least rescue a point against Athletic Bilbao in a match that ended 1-1 today.

Still, questions will be asked about Valverde’s rotation policy, and more to the point, his system. The last few performances have been below par, and the blaugrana have gone three straight without winning. Valverde clearly had one eye on the upcoming run of difficult matches, but in the meantime, he’s put himself, potentially, in a hole in the league.

Ideally, he is getting his new players adjusted to the team, meanwhile he is trying to find the best system that accommodates his players. He might argue that these are just growing pains. But that time period to tinker is running on short supply.

Tottenham Hotspur, Valencia, Sevilla, Inter Milan, Real Madrid - those are the next 5 opponents. Then there’s some respite theoretically, with Rayo Vallecano next, but then comes another match against Inter. And once again, you get a theoretical break with Real Betis, but then comes Atlético Madrid, PSV Eindhoven, and Villarreal, before the Catalan derby against Espanyol, and then another match against Spurs.

The fans are not on Valverde’s side fully yet. The exit in the UEFA Champions League last season against AS Roma is a huge blow to an otherwise sterling first season, to the point that it’s fair to say the coach is not fully trusted. Perhaps his reaction this season is to focus fully on the Champions League, and thus, he is willing to have his team conserve energy on days like these. But such a strategy is risky too, because if he does not deliver on that front, what’s left?

Valverde explains why he benched Messi and Busquets

The duo started the game on the bench

Ernesto Valverde explained why he decided to bench both Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets for Saturday’s home clash with Athletic Bilbao.

The pair came on in the second half as Barcelona chased an equaliser after going behind to Óscar De Marcos’ goal just before half-time.

Yet it was another substitute, Munir, who saved Barcelona from a second defeat in a row, as he popped up with an equaliser with six minutes of normal time remaining.

Speaking after the game Valverde explained his team selection.

“When I make the decision, I think about what’s best for my team and for my club,” he said.

”I always do that before playing games, I can’t do it afterwards or rewind.

”Fans can decide what they think is convenient, but I need to think about the best for my team.

”It’s my absolute responsibility, we have four games in ten days and I thought that Leo and Busquets had to rest knowing that we have a very difficult match on Wednesday.

“I knew it was a risky decision, but if it had gone well, you wouldn’t be asking me about it.”

Barça 1-1 Athletic: Poor Result, Amazing Game

Forget the bad result for a bit. This was some awesome football.

Barcelona have now failed to win in three consecutive games following a 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao at Camp Nou. A truly fantastic match that saw both teams play really good football from start to finish ended with Munir scoring a late equalizer for Barça, who should be disappointed with the result but definitely not with the performance.

FIRST HALF

Barça started the game very brightly, with neat one-twos and passing triangles in midfield, and with Lionel Messi on the bench it was Luis Suárez who took charge of the attack and nearly scored a sensational free kick in the opening 10 minutes, but his shot went just wide of the post.

Athletic survived the early pressure and began to show their ability to counter whenever they got the ball back in wide areas. Iñaki Williams was a thorn on the side of the Barça center-backs all half, and he had two clear-cut chances to put his team ahead but couldn’t produce a quality finish.

After a bit of a dry spell, Barça’s creativity returned and they created some really good chances through Philippe Coutinho and Suárez, who was active and moving all over the final third to create for himself and others. Unai Simón had to make two fantastic saves to stop the former Liverpool teammates, and it seemed like we were destined for a goalless first half.

But in the 41st minute, after a corner wasn’t properly dealt with by the Blaugrana defense, Markel Susaeta put in a perfect cross to find Óscar De Marcos, who scored a really nice volley and put his side ahead.

At halftime, a high-level, high-quality game of football was entertaining and exciting, but Barça fans were worried about a third consecutive game without a victory. They had Messi on the bench, though...

SECOND HALF

Messi didn’t start the second half right away, but he and Sergio Busquets were warming up from the first whistle and looked ready to come on at any point. Busquets was the first as he had to replace an injured Sergi Roberto, and Messi came on for Vidal with 35 minutes to go as Valverde went all in to try and make a comeback.

Barça certainly put the pressure on and had a golden opportunity to equalize when Coutinho hit the bar and Suárez hit the rebound onto his own face with an open net, but for the most part Athletic were incredibly solid defensively and still found ways to counter attack thanks to Williams’ pace.

Valverde made one final attacking change as Munir replaced Dembélé, and the young striker made an immediate impact when he was at the right place at the right time to tap in a cross from Messi and give Barça hope for three points in the final five minutes of the match.

Barça thought they had won it when Piqué made a run into the box and found Suárez for an easy finish, but the Uruguayan couldn’t keep himself onside and the goal was disallowed. The push for a winner continued as we reached injury time, and there was a giant chance when Messi found Rakitic inside the box, but the Croatian fired his shot over the bar.

There was no more time to find a winner, and Barça had to settle for a point. It’s now three games without a win, and we have Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley next. Tough times right now.

Barcelona: Ter Stegen; Semedo, Piqué, Lenglet, Alba; Vidal (Messi), Roberto (Busquets), Rakitic; Dembélé (Munir), Suárez, Coutinho

Goal: Munir (84’)

Athletic: Simón; De Marcos, Yeray, Martínez (Nolaskoain), Balenziaga; Dani García, Beñat (San José); Susaeta, Raúl García, Yuri; Williams (Aduriz)

Three things Barca need to do against Athletic

Valverde reportedly considering returning to 4-4-2

Is a change in formation on the cards?

Ernesto Valverde has plenty to think about after a couple of poor results with Barcelona and some tough-looking fixtures ahead against Athletic Bilbao, Tottenham and Valencia.

The boss has apparently been considering returning to a 4-4-2 in a bid to improve his team’s stuttering form, well that’s what Marca reckon anyway.

Valverde used the formation last season as Barcelona won the Double. However, it wasn’t completely popular with supporters who wanted to see Barca playing 4-3-3.

The team have reverted to that formation this season but, so far at least, it’s not really quite worked out, and Barcelona don’t look all that comfortable.

After drawing with Girona and losing to Leganes the pressure is on this weekend to return to winning ways against Athletic.

The report reckons Valverde is considering playing 4-4-2 to help out Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele and try to get the best out of the Frenchman.

It remains to be seen if that will happen, or if Valverde will persist with the same tactics he’s employed this season. One thing is for sure though, Barcelona need to improve after an embarrassing loss to Leganes last time out.

What formation do you want to see Barcelona play on Saturday? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Valverde talks Umtiti, Gerard Pique, rotation & Athletic

The boss has been answering questions

Ernesto Valverde faced the press on Friday ahead of Saturday’s visit from Athletic Bilbao and played down reports of a serious knee injury for Samuel Umtiti.

The Barcelona boss said he was hopeful the World Cup winner would return to action soon and did not rule out resting Gerard Pique at the weekend.

Here are the best bits...

Valverde on Umtiti

He’s got a knee problem and he couldn’t have played on Wednesday [against Spurs due to suspension].

Let’s see how things develop, but hopefully it won’t be too long before he’s back with us. It’s a blow for us.

Valverde on Pique

He seems very focused on his football. Pique’s been playing all the time, so it’s a possibility that he rests and that Lenglet and Vermaelen play together. We will see.

Valverde on rotation

We will see if we make some adjustments. That doesn’t mean that we will change the whole approach, when we look at the team we know we are a side with quality players and I don’t think the system is so important.

We need to deal with the game tomorrow knowing that it will have characteristics which are different to those we have faced up to now.

Valverde on Athletic

We’ll need to deal with the early pressure from them and then develop our game. We know how much will Athletic have, they put constant pressure on you for 90 minutes.

Berizzo doesn’t change his approach whether it’s home or away. They don’t submit to the opposition, they like to come at you.

How should Barcelona line up against Athletic Bilbao?

Umtiti to miss Athletic Bilbao clash with knee problem

The defender is set for a spell out

Samuel Umtiti was forced to miss training on Friday due to a knee problem according to Barcelona. The centre-half has appeared in seven games in all competitions for Barcelona this year and has been a consistent piece in their lineup.

Umtiti’s recent outings haven’t been as great. He picked up a red card in his last Champions League match and sat on the bench in Barcelona’s midweek match against Leganes.

The knee injury seems to have little to do with recent play and something that has built up over time. It remains to be seen how serious the problem is but certainly something to keep a close eye on.

AS are reporting that the injury could keep him out for some time. However, in his pre-match press conference Ernesto Valverde played down suggestions it was a serious injury and hoped he would be available soon.

Barcelona unveil plans to update club crest

The club want to make a few changes

Barcelona unveiled a new and updated club crest on Thursday which is due to feature on the club’s kit from the start of next season.

There are a few subtle changes, most notably the removal of the ‘FCB’ and less blaugrana stripes. Here’s a little look at what has changed.

The club have explained the reason behind the update on their official website.

“FC Barcelona is changing its crest in order to adapt to modern times. Since the design was last updated in 2002, the context, society and technology have changed enormously, and the symbols identified with the club need to evolve too.

“This evolution stays faithful to the historical elements of the crest: the city, Barcelona; the country, Catalonia; the club, the ‘blaugrana’ colours; and the ball. But the new design now has greater reproduction capacity, especially in the increasingly more important world of digital media.”

Source | FC Barcelona

The new crest has already been approved by the Board of Directors but also needs the green light from the club’s membership which should happen in October.

Almost impossible for Barca to sign Pogba - report

The midfielder is unhappy at Manchester United

This week at Manchester United Paul Pogba and manager Jose Mourinho had yet another dispute that was caught by cameras. This time it was Sky Sports catching the two arguing at the start of a training session.

Every time there is conflict with Mourinho and Pogba, which happens a decent amount, the transfer rumors are brought back up. From the first time things got interesting between the two at United the rumors of Juventus, PSG, Barcelona, and even Real Madrid being interested in the Frenchmen arose.

However, this time around there’s a bit of realism mixed in with Mundo Deportivo doubting Barcelona’s chances of signing the World Cup winner. The report reckons his agent Mino Raiola’s fee and Pogba’s huge wages are enough to rule out Barcelona. In fact they seem to think only PSG and Juventus could afford the midfielder.

The likelihood of Barcelona bringing that much money to the table is unlikely, but there’s always a chance when you’re talking about one of the richest clubs in the world.

Leganes goalkeeper says Barcelona are bad losers

The champions failed to congratulate their opponents at Butarque

Leganes goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar came out and criticized Barcelona players for being bad losers after their 2-1 loss on Wednesday.

“We are a humble side. but I like it when people who are used to winning lose, salute the other team and say congratulations, something Barcelona did not do to any of our players,” he said.

”None of the Barcelona players came after the game to speak to us, and I think that is an ugly gesture. I don’t think anyone noticed, but I wanted to say this.”

“When I got to my locker and I picked up my mobile, it was so heated up -- just like the Barca players were! I had lots of WhatsApp messages.

“I probably will not see the replays of the saves I made because the most important thing was the work that the team did. One knows perfectly well when one does a good job and when he does badly.”

Three things we learned from Leganes 2-1 Barcelona

Poor decisions led to Barca’s loss against Leganes

The champions were beaten at Butarque

Wednesday’s loss to Leganes came as a wake-up call that was necessary for several players. This was some of the worst football Barcelona has played in a long time and a lot of the blame has gone on Ernesto Valverde, and rightfully so.

The problems with this game are symptoms of a systemic issue. Several fans questioned why Barcelona sold Lucas Digne when they had no able back-up and the answer was an upcoming talent waiting to be handed his opportunity to impress--Miranda.

Yet, when push came to shove, Valverde used Thomas Vermaelen instead, who hasn’t played on the left-side of the defense in years. The decision to not sign a back-up for Gerard Pique was also heavily debated and that choice has come back to haunt the club as the Catalan’s poor form continues.

While many fans have had an issue with Malcom replacing Ousmane Dembele, it isn’t because the Frenchman cannot play on the left-side. If anything, he should continue playing there as his ability to use both feet allows him to play well on either flank.

Malcom, however, is at his best only when played on the right and that’s something the coach should have considered when making the substitution against Leganes.

Another poor decision that has gotten lost in the mix is Ernesto Valverde’s insistence on starting Sergi Roberto. Playing Roberto on the right side was never Luis Enrique’s choice.

The club had no right-back after Dani Alves left. In Valverde’s case, however, the coach had one of the most promising right-back prospects in Nelson Semedo and he benched him for nothing.

There are currently a number of things wrong with the squad’s planning and preparation for games and that’s something which cannot be fixed by simply replacing the coach.

Valverde’s team not only lacks the necessary profiles and back-ups, it also lacks a tactical approach to games. One may put the blame for the squad on the coach but the loss is on the coach and his players.

It will take a lot more than a coaching change to bring Barcelona back to its old ways and it seems like that’s not going to happen anytime soon.

Busquets says he’s worried by Barca’s defence

The champions are leaking goals

Sergio Busquets said he’s feeling worried after Barcelona’s shock defeat to Leganes on Wednesday night.

The Spanish champions dropped points for the second game in a row, and Busquets is concerned about the goals they are conceding.

“The worrying thing is conceding so many goals. We have to be more solid. These are the details which can take points from you and we have to improve.

”We’re a team. We win and we lose together. We have to look at what went wrong as a team. We play with 11 players and we all lost the game.”

”The other day was different. There are no excuses today, it was 11 against 11.”

Valverde at a loss to explain defeat to Leganes

But, the boss says he is responsible

Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde said it was “difficult to explain” his team’s 2-1 defeat to Leganes on Wednesday night.

The visitors deservedly picked up their first three points of the season against Barcelona despite going behind to a fine goal from Philippe Coutinho.

Leganes scored twice in 68 seconds in the second half, through Nabil El Zhar and Oscar Rodriguez, to hand Valverde his first La Liga defeat of the season.

“This is football and it can happen, sometimes it’s difficult to explain things that happen in a game,” he said.

”We controlled the game but they knew how to hurt us within a minute, and to be frank one goal wasn’t enough.

“Sure, in the end the coach is responsible.”

Leganés 2-1 Barcelona: Review

Recap of the action from Barcelona’s shocking loss to Leganes.

Barcelona one-upped their showing against Girona with a remarkable loss against Leganes. After leading for the majority of the first half, Nabil El Zhar and Oscar Rodriguez scored two goals in one minute in the secord to secure a shocking win.

Ernesto Valverdo rotated the lineup once again, this time Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez receiving some deserved rest. They were replaced by Thomas Vermaelen and Munir El Haddadi, both making their first La Liga appearance of the season.

Barcelona were looking to quickly get on the scoresheet, but a very defensively set-up Leganes side was able to deal with all attacks. The closest the Catalans came in the early going was in the 7th minute when Ousmane Dembele fired just wide of the near post from the left side. Barcelona’s attacks continued, but regardless of the Catalans’ early supremacy on the pitch, the goal they scored in the 12th minute came almost out of nowhere. Lionel Messi quickly burst through the midfield and found Coutinho 20-yards out. The Brazilian’s first touch was far from ideal, but the half-volley that followed was perfectly placed out of reach of Iván Cuéllar.

Five minutes later, Messi fired on goal from almost the exact same spot as Coutinho did, but the Argentine was aiming for the top corner. Unlike Coutinho, Messi wasn’t able to celebrate the goal as he was denied by the crossbar. Moments later the Barcelona captain had another chance, but this time his shot was right at Cuéllar.

For the first time in the game Leganes threatened in the 25th minute when after a long free kick and a poor clearance a redirected shot almost caught Marc-Andre ter Stegen flatfooted. The German was, however, able to make the save, but the hosts started to show some life in attack.

On the other side of the pitch, Barcelona showed very little as Leganes did exceptionally well in disrupting play. There was very little in terms of creativity to be seen from the Catalans who after the aforementioned two Messi 20-yard shot couldn’t get anywhere near Cuéllar. Leganes, meanwhile, created their best looking chance of the game in the 39th minute, but Youssef En-Nesyri’s header was right at ter Stegen.

The hosts were doing a very good job the entire first half not allowing an inch of free space through the middle, only leaving some space on the wings, but Barcelona showed no intent of attacking down the wings. Before the referee would end the largely uneventful first half, Leganes would get one last chance to tie the game, but ter Stegen stopped Oscar’s curling try with a panther like save.

The beginning of the second half didn’t bring about any substitutions. The Catalans quickly created two scoring chances, but the first was erased by a Munir offside, while Dembele had the ball stripped away at the last moment. Barcelona would have to pay for those missed opportunities in the 52nd minute as El Zhar escaped Thomas Vermaelen to get on the receiving end of a cross to tie the game at one. Just a minute later the hosts were in the lead. Gerard Pique made a boneheaded play to give the ball away inside the penalty area to Oscar who promptly beat ter Stegen.

With the hosts now holding an unlikely lead, manager Mauricio Pellegrino brought every single Leganes player inside 30-yards of Cuéllar, leaving no space for Barcelona to operate. With one hour of football in the books Ernesto Valverde brought on Luis Suarez in place of Munir. But the mediocrity continued even though Barcelona was playing with about as close to their best lineup as they could get, with only Alba missing – yet against the last placed team in La Liga the Catalans couldn’t create pretty much anything. Leganes, actually, remarkably often made Barcelona look foolish as the hosts managed to pin Barcelona deep even though they were clearly focused on defending.

With time running out, Valverde made his remaining two substitutions in the 71st minute, bringing on Alba in place of Vermaelen and Malcom in place of Dembele, but Barcelona’s struggles in attack continued because Leganes made it impossible to pass through the middle. And Leganes just continued to add to the congestion in midfield with a substitution in the 75th minute when Gerard Gumbau joined play.

Barcelona were attacking, but Leganes seemingly with ease defended everything. It wasn’t until the 80th minute when Barcelona actually threatened to score, but Cuéllar made two brilliant saves to keep his team in the lead, the first on Coutinho, the second on Ivan Rakitić. And the fact that Barcelona couldn’t create a single real opportunity in the time remaining should be testament enough how bad the Blaugrana were on this day.

Barcelona lost five point in three days, two against Girona at home and three against the last placed team in La Liga. There is simply no excuse for today’s embarrassment.

Leganés 2-1 Barça: Embarrassing

This was REALLY bad.

Barcelona suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of the worst team in La Liga as Leganés came from behind to win 2-1 at the Estadio Butarque. The Blaugrana went ahead and looked ready to win, but after conceding two goals in two minutes they were horrible and deservedly lost their unbeaten record and quite possibly the first place in the table. It’s all bad.

FIRST HALF

Barça started the game with real purpose and intent, moving the ball with pace and precision trying to find spaces inside a tight Leganés defense who had 9 men behind the ball and just one striker trying to create something on the counter. It took only 12 minutes for Barça to break down the defense when Philippe Coutinho scored an absurd volley from the edge of the box, and it looked like the Blaugrana would score time after time here.

They didn’t, however, and not because they dropped their intensity. Lionel Messi hit the bar and had a good shot saved by the keeper right after the goal, and Barça continued to send bodies forward searching for a second. The problem was poor Munir El-Haddadi, who started in place of Luis Suárez and ruined multiple attacks with bad touches, poor decisions and way too many offsides.

Leganés saw that Barça were having trouble creating real chances, so they went forward and had some decent opportunities. Their best came when Óscar Rodríguez found himself in space on the left side and tried a nice curling effort into the top corner, but Ter Stegen made an easy save.

At halftime, Barça were the better team and should have scored at least one more goal. The objective for the second half? Earning a more comfortable lead to have an easy period and win the game.

SECOND HALF

There two goals in just two minutes at the start of the second half, but they didn’t happen for Barcelona. Thanks to two defensive mistakes, the Blaugrana conceded to El Zhar and Óscar Rodríguez, and Leganés somehow had the lead. Barça had around 40 minutes to find two goals, and they needed to wake up fast.

It took them until the final 10 minutes to finally put together any meaningful attacks, and then goalkeeper Cuéllar made two world-class saves to stop Coutinho and Ivan Rakitic, and Barça entered into desperation mode in the final moments. Leganés were doing everything they could to keep their advantage, and they were successful as Barça couldn’t put three passes together and saw the final whistle come without showing any creativity or intent to get a goal.

This is an embarrassing result, and the second half was truly terrible. We lost to the worst team in the league, and we deserved to lose to the worst team in the league.

Messi makes his 700th Barca appearance

The skipper has racked up another landmark

Lionel Messi reached yet another landmark in a career packed full of them on Wednesday night, as he made his 700th appearance for Barcelona.

The Barcelona captain led out the team at Butarque to face Leganes almost 15 years since making his debut against Porto in a friendly in November 2003.

Only Andres Iniesta and Xavi have made more appearances for Barcelona than Messi. Iniesta stands on 758 games, while Xavi managed a whopping 869.

Messi does have more titles than any other player to have featured for Barcelona.

He’s picked up 33 trophies during his time at the Camp Nou and there may well be a few more by the time he’s finished.

Barcelona football is back! After a crazy, entertaining game against Girona at Camp Nou the Blaugrana are still unbeaten and still top the table in La Liga, and could start to open up a huge gap over Real Madrid who face Sevilla away from home and a local derby against Atlético Madrid. They could drop several points from those two games, and if Barça win their next two we could be looking at a potential title-winning points gap even at this early stage.

For that to happen, obviously, Barça need to win their games. They have a relatively straightforward first challenge away to Leganés, who have just one point from their first five games and conceded 10 goals so far. They just aren’t good at all right now, and Barça need to take advantage. Will they? Let’s find out.

POSSIBLE LINEUPS

Barcelona (4-3-3): Ter Stegen; S.Roberto, Piqué, Umtiti, Alba; Rakitic, Busquets, Coutinho; Messi, Suárez, Dembélé

Leganés (4-3-3): Cuéllar; Nyom, Bustinza, Siovas, García; Recio, Pérez, Gumbau; El Zhar, Carillo, Rolán

PREDICTION

Barça feel like they were robbed of three points against Girona, and they’ll no doubt be very hungry to win this one and the opposition might not put up much of a fight: 4-1 to the leaders.
