Barcelona show fighting spirit ahead of Porto challenge

New-found toughness could pay off big in the Champions League

It’s hard to know what to think about this Barcelona team in the early goings of the season.

Xavi’s men continue to search for a tactical identity from game to game. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

It hasn’t been smooth sailing for the manager, who’s been dealt a tough hand with last minute surprises in the transfer window, and injuries to key players.

With three games in the past week, it’s been a mixed bag, but we’ve learned a lot about the team.

The three goals in ten minutes, come-from-behind victory against Celta Vigo, wasn’t just exciting, but an encouraging sign that Barca was developing a never-say-die toughness that hasn’t been seen in years.

FC Barcelona v Celta Vigo - LaLiga EA Sports Photo by Eric Alonso/Getty Images

Days later, they took on Mallorca, and once again found themselves trailing for large portions of the game. To their credit, they were able to salvage a tie. But they also allowed themselves to fall behind their opponent twice.

To be fair, Barcelona didn’t perform well in either one of these games, although there were promising signs from a few players.

Against Sevilla, they came out of the gates swinging, and were aggressive throughout, with Xavi using Raphinha as a second striker to play behind Robert Lewandowski.

At their best this season, Barcelona are trying to shake off the lethargic side to side, hyper-rigid possession-based football, that fans and pundits alike have criticized for years. Whether this is out of necessity, due to the Pedri and Frenkie de Jong injuries, or whether it’s an intentional tactical shift, is hard to say.

We’ve gone from playing with four midfielders, to playing with four forwards. That’s quite the change. It was nice to see the initiative to get more numbers attacking the final third, as opposed to dominating parts of the field that don’t threaten the score line.

FC Barcelona v Sevilla FC - LaLiga EA Sports Photo by Joan Valls/Urbanandsport /NurPhoto via Getty Images

I appreciate Xavi’s attempt to rotate players early on, and his guts in trying certain players in positions that may be unfamiliar to them. Raphinha going off injured was a buzzkill, because he looked more lively and unpredictable in this role, compared to what we’ve seen from him on the wing.

I hope we continue to see experimentation going forward, and regular rotation, especially with the forwards.

The back four look sharp, and I’m even willing to give Inigo Martinez a mulligan given the fact that he was thrown into the Mallorca game with little time to build report with his team-mates. Hopefully there’s a lesson learned that defensive continuity matters, and when making changes, it’s probably better to make one at a time.

Credit must be given to Gavi and Ilkay Gundogan as well, who have done well in the absence of their midfield comrades.

FC Barcelona v Sevilla FC - LaLiga EA Sports Photo by Eric Alonso/Getty Images

With Pedri sidelined, Gavi is looking like the player who made his breakthrough in his debut season, when he stole the show while the Canarian was out for an extended time. Gavi does well when the spotlight is on him, and he doesn’t have to worry about combining perfectly with the talent around him.

But there are many important games ahead. And at this point, there are more questions than answers.

Porto will provide a big test on Wednesday. If Barcelona get the three points, they are well on their way in the group, and will have some pressure lifted going forward, that could help across all competitions.

Based on what I’ve seen so far, I’m encouraged by what this Barcelona team is showing. The football hasn’t been fantastic, but they have a lot of fight in them. More than I’ve seen in the last five years at least.

FC Barcelona v Sevilla FC - LaLiga EA Sports Photo by Eric Alonso/Getty Images

The team doesn’t seem bothered by the fact that they aren’t always playing the game beautifully. The focus seems to be on working hard, and fighting until the end for the result, and for their place in the lineup.

And that’s a very healthy foundation to build upon, especially as players come back from injury, and the team continues to search for its best form.

Gavi has always been the spiritual leader of the team, but now he’s become a role model for his team-mates as well. You don’t have to be perfect, but you always have to give it your all. Enough of the overthinking, and worries about making mistakes. Just show that you want it more than anyone else.

Fermin Lopez is cut from the same cloth. There’s no hesitation from that guy, just a desire to make his mark in whatever way he can. Maybe he’s earned his way into the starting eleven, if not for the Champions League, given the pressure of the occasion, then maybe the following game against Granada.

FC Barcelona v Sevilla FC - LaLiga EA Sports Photo by Manuel Queimadelos/Quality Sport Images/Getty Images

Lamine Yamal, like it or not for those of us who think he should be managed more cautiously, will have a big role to play. The only way around that is if Ferran Torres steps up and gives him a challenge again.

Let’s hope the Barca players continue competing hard against one another for minutes on the field, and that it translates to a strong fight together on the field against whoever they’re up against.

October will be a big month, and by the end of it, we’ll know what this team is really all about.

Will they be ruthless in their Europa league level Champions League group?

By the end of it, will they come out on top against Real Madrid, and take an early lead in the race for another La Liga title?

FC Barcelona v Sevilla FC - LaLiga Photo by Jose Hernandez/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images

I’m optimistic, because even though I’m not seeing a team play the best football they can play, I am seeing confidence and positivity from players who refuse to back down.

For that to continue, they’ll need results on the pitch.

Given the circumstances, it won’t be easy, and the players, formation, and tactics may change from game to game.

It’ll be intriguing to see how the team lines up next, and if they can build towards something greater and more consistent.

Whether they take off, or are brought down to earth, will depend largely on Xavi’s tactical solutions, but also his ability to continue motivating the players.

Hopefully the former catches up with the latter quickly.

‘If Barca won it’s because we were better’ - Pep on Negreira

Newcastle United v Manchester City - Carabao Cup Third Round
Photo by Richard Sellers/Sportsphoto/Allstar via Getty Images

But justice will decide....

Pep Guardiola has shared his thoughts on the Negreira refereeing scandal that continues to dominate headlines once again.

It has emerged this week that Barca are now under formal investigation for bribery, with Sevilla chiefs boycotting Friday’s match in protest at the situation.

Guardiola has been asked about the situation and says he’ll wait to see what happens but is convinced that if Barca won games it was purely because they were the better team.

“Wait and see…let the justice, the process (run). So far what I heard…I didn’t see or read, because I’m out of that, but I didn’t see Barcelona really, really, really, really pay a referee to take a benefit. I didn’t see that, I didn’t read it,” he said.

“That’s why I want to wait before I have an opinion, because Barcelona is going to defend what they have to do, and we will see.

“What I’m pretty sure is when Barcelona won, it was because they were better than the opponents. That I’m pretty convinced about right now – in our day.

“We won because we were far better than our rivals. And when they were not, they don’t win, they lose. But justice will decide what really happened.”

Barcelona are yet to respond publicly to the latest developments but did respond angrily to Sevilla’s statement - confirming they have severed ties with the club while it continues its current stance.

Barcelona offer update on Raphinha injury after Sevilla win

FC Barcelona v Sevilla FC - LaLiga EA Sports
Photo by Joan Valls/Urbanandsport /NurPhoto via Getty Images

The Brazilian is out

Barcelona have offered an update on Raphinha after the Brazilian was forced off injured against Sevilla on Friday night in La Liga.

Raphinha had to be replaced by Fermin Lopez in the first half and it’s now been confirmed he is set for a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

Early reports are suggesting that Raphinha will miss around a month of action for Xavi’s side.

The forward will not feature against Porto or Granada before the international break and will also not link up with the Brazil team for their World Cup qualifiers.

Raphinha is also expected to miss the game against Athletic Club when domestic football resumes, and it remains to be seen if he’ll be fit for El Clasico on October 28.

The news is a blow for Barcelona and means Raphinha joins midfield duo Pedri and Frenkie de Jong on the injured list.

WATCH: Ansu Fati scores his first goal for Brighton

Aston Villa v Brighton & Hove Albion - Premier League

The first of many?

Ansu Fati scored his first goal for Brighton on Saturday following his summer move on loan from Barcelona.

The youngster came on at half-time of Brighton’s Premier League clash with Aston Villa, with his team already 3-0 down after the first 45 minutes.

Two goals from Ollie Watkins and a Pervis Estupinan strike had put the hosts in charge of the match at Villa Park.

Fati wasted no time in reducing the deficit, scoring from close range with just 50 minutes on the clock to open his account for his new club.

It’s a great moment for Fati who has moved to Brighton in a bid to get his career back on track after falling out of favor at Barcelona.

The Spain international had made four appearances for Robert De Zerbi’s side, before today’s match, and will be hoping today’s goal is the first of many.

Three talking points from Barcelona 1-0 Sevilla

Another win for Xavi’s side

Sergio Ramos to the rescue for Barca

Barcelona went on the attack before the match with a statement severing ties with Sevilla, and Xavi did the same with his XI – starting Robert Lewandowski, Joao Felix, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal.

Barcelona went on to create plenty of opportunities to win the game but just could not get the ball into the back of the net. Joao Felix smashed a great chance against the bar, Gavi twice went close, while Robert Lewandowski had one off the line.

It looked like being one of those nights until the goal eventually came - but not from a Barcelona man – from Sergio Ramos of all players.

Ferran Torres, who seems far more effective as a sub than a starter, crossed for Lamine Yamal who headed it back across goal to Fermin Lopez. Yet instead of reaching the Barca youngster it hit Ramos and rolled across the line for the only goal of the game.

Barcelona fans obviously loved it, signing the former Real Madrid skipper’s name and delighting in the fact he had handed a very sweet win to Xavi’s side that sends them, temporarily at least, top of the table again.

Fermin Lopez stakes his claim

It’s been a good week for Fermin Lopez. He scored the equaliser against Mallorca, went back to university in midweek to continue his studies and then starred for Barca again on Friday.

Xavi sent on Lopez in the first half after losing Raphinha to a hamstring injury and the Barcelona midfielder grabbed the chance to impress with both hands in a super showing.

The 20-year-old showed off some silky touches, created chances, displayed huge heart and desire (almost Gavi-esque at times) and looked every inch a Barcelona player in an effervescent display.

Xavi was full of praise for Lopez after the match, tipping the youngster to become a “top player” and telling him he has a big future at the club as long as he continues to believe in himself.

Lopez certainly seemed full of belief, no doubt fuelled from his Mallorca goal, and we’re likely to see far more of him in the coming weeks too with Raphinha now joining Frenkie de Jong and Pedri on the injured list.

The loss of the trio is a blow to Barcelona but the emergence of Fermin is already a real plus, and it will be interesting to see how much of an impact he can make on the team this season.

Kounde and Gavi are Barca’s backbone

Barcelona also had Jules Kounde and Gavi to thank for the victory. The duo have been arguably Barca’s best two players of the early weeks of the season and a big reason why they are still unbeaten.

Xavi’s side were undone by defensive mistakes against Real Mallorca, leaving Xavi pretty angry afterwards, but there was no repeat against Sevilla as the hosts kept a clean sheet.

Kounde started at center-back alongside Andreas Christensen and was crucial to the win, making vital interceptions and blocks. In nine games this season he is still yet to be dribbled past by any player.

The Frenchman’s response to returning to central defense this season has been incredibly impressive. It’s also worth noting he’s yet to pick up a single booking so far, impressive stuff for a central half.

It’s a different story entirely for Gavi, who has four already, but the tenacious teenager impressed yet again. He continues to be Barca’s heart and soul but is rapidly becoming far much more than than too.

Gavi added to his ever-expanding repertoire against Sevilla with some vital blocks and killer passes. He also ran the most out of any player (11.6km) in another simply relentless display.

Barcelona have two diamonds in Gundogan and Lamine

FC Barcelona v Sevilla FC - LaLiga EA Sports

Ran the show against Sevilla...

Shorn of the talents of Frenkie de Jong, Barca’s midfield took on an unusual look against Sevilla with Raphinha providing some zip to the front three as well as getting forward as often as play would allow.

Until his untimely hamstring injury the Brazilian was quite lively without necessarily looking dangerous.

On balance, Xavi will probably deduce that even if the team selection was forced upon him in some way, it was an experiment that arguably was neither excellent nor awful.

I’d suggest that he’s unlikely to try it again in the near future.

In any event, another midfielder deserves the plaudits for an understated but absolutely brilliant display.

FC Barcelona v Sevilla - LaLiga EA Sports Photo by David S.Bustamante/Soccrates/Getty Images

Ilkay Gundogan rarely makes the headlines but nor is he an unsung hero.

He’s a proper footballer’s footballer, in the same manner Paul Scholes was for Manchester United. Game recognises game.

In the first 45 in particular, his transitional play was smooth, quick and accurate and his positional play and understanding was head and shoulders above his team-mates.

The German makes up for the lack of dynamism to his play, with his innate football brain.

It’s a quality that only a few possess, and in Barca’s case, it’s for the benefit of the many.

Whilst he may go about his work quietly, you can be sure that his absence would be noticeable.

It’s worth remembering too he was Pep Guardiola’s treble-winning captain for a reason.

FC Barcelona v Sevilla FC - LaLiga Photo by Jose Hernandez/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images

A player at the opposite end of his career but who is also continuing to do great things is Lamine Yamal.

Ask yourself… what were you doing at 16 years of age?!

Raphinha’s injury will almost certainly hand the fearless teenager more first-team minutes, and the issue for Xavi is managing his time on the pitch to ensure he doesn’t suffer the same fate as Ansu Fati.

Fortunately, culers have quickly understood that Lamine isn’t going to affect the play every week, particularly when he’s paired against international class defenders.

For a player that will be honing his craft for many years yet, it’s vital that he retains the support from those in the stands.

The effervescence of youth will see him try things that aren’t always going to come off but those mistakes must be embraced as part of the learning process.

On Friday night, especially during the second half, his confidence was there for all to see.

In their own distinctive way, both Gundogan and Lamine will be vital to Barca’s successes in 2023/24.

Gavi reveals what Xavi tells him during Barca matches

FC Barcelona v Sevilla - LaLiga EA Sports

The midfielder spoke out after the win over Sevilla

Barcelona midfielder Gavi fronted up after the win over Sevilla on Friday to discuss the victory at Montjuic.

The teenager put in another impressive showing, although it was noted how Xavi is constantly talking to him during matches.

Gavi was asked what his manager is telling him and offered up the following response.

“He says tactical things to me, he gives observations, he tell me how he thinks I’m doing, and my team-mates. I’m really grateful actually for the trust he gives to me.”

Barcelona’s No. 6 also spoke about the win and how he felt it was fully deserved.

“It’s an important win for us. I think we deserved it from start to finish. I’m really happy about the result,” he said.

“It was similar against Mallorca. We didn’t take our chances, today we had various chances, we should have scored in the first half but we didn’t. In the end we’ve won and so I’m happy.

“We left Mallorca really disappointed with the result, we made chances snd didn’t take them, so we were disappointed.”

Barcelona now turn their attentions back to the Champions League and a trip to Porto on Tuesday.

Barça 1-0 Sevilla: Recap

FC Barcelona v Sevilla - LaLiga EA Sports

A hard-fought and massive win

Barcelona remain unbeaten to start the season and will be top of the La Liga table for at least one night thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 win over Sevilla at the Montjuïc Olympic Stadium on Friday evening. Barça played very well for all 90 minutes and created several huge chances, but they struggled to finish them and needed a Sergio Ramos own goal to get all three points and earn a crucial victory at home.

FIRST HALF

The first half was played at a very high level between two good teams who respected each other’s strengths and were extremely competitive and didn’t give the other an inch. The referee did a good job of allowing some physicality without calling unnecessary fouls, and the game had a nice flow to it as the two sides exchanged punches for 45 minutes.

Barça had more of the ball as they tend to do, and after a shaky start with a few poor passes and touches they began finding their groove and creating good openings with good passing variety and excellent movement. The best chance came when João Cancelo went on a brilliant run through three defenders and put it on a plate for João Félix, but his shot hit the crossbar and stayed out in a very unlucky moment for the Portuguese forward.

Jules Kounde came close to scoring against his former club with a header that went just wide off a corner from Ilkay Gündogan, and substitute Fermín López, who replaced Raphinha after the Brazilian left with a hamstring injury, missed a big chance to score for the second time in four days when Lamine Yamal found him with a gorgeous pass inside the penalty area but the young midfielder couldn’t generate enough power with his shot.

The best chances belonged to Barça but Sevilla had some dangerous moments of their own and both Ivan Rakitic and Dodi Lukébakio forced Marc-André ter Stegen into making a couple of solid saves to stop the away team from scoring, and the visitors showed they were very much alive and ready to pounce if given the chance.

At halftime a fun, competitive first half had no goals but plenty of action, and more entertainment was expected for the final period. Would Barça keep up the good work and find the winning goals or could Sevilla stay in it long enough to pull off the upset?

SECOND HALF

Barça came out strong from the halftime break and amped up the intensity with their pressing and work on the ball, forcing Sevilla to defend a lot deeper and resort to stronger challenges that led to fouls and yellow cards for the visitors as they tried to slow down the Blaugrana’s momentum.

The first 15 minutes had a lot of dangerous attacks and a few half-chances for the Catalans without a real opportunity to unlock the Sevilla defense, but the quality of the offense made it feel like the opening goal was just a matter of time as the home team increased the pressure and Sevilla’s defending became more and more last-ditch.

The hosts almost found themselves behind when Rakitic nearly scored a beautiful header that hit the side netting, but with 15 minutes to go Barça finally found a breakthrough: a beautiful cross from Ferran Torres found Lamine Yamal all alone on the right wing inside the box, and his header hit the leg of Sergio Ramos and went into the net for an own goal to give Barça the lead.

Sevilla had nothing to lose and made attacking substitutions looking to push for an equalizer, and they nearly found it when Jesús Navas made a run in behind the defense and tried to square it for Mariano Díaz but Kounde denied him with a sensational sliding tackle.

Barça were forced to defend their narrow lead and tried to keep the ball to run the clock out, and for most of the dying minutes they did the job almost flawlessly. They also created some more chances to score a second and kill off the game but couldn’t finish them, and had to do some desperate defending in the final seconds to secure all three points.

The final whistle came to guarantee the victory for the home team, and Barça really had to work to earn the win against a Sevilla side that played very well and brought the fight to the Catalan capital. A clean sheet is huge news considering the recent defensive struggles, and the attacking quality is also encouraging despite the poor finishing.

And let’s be honest, a 1-0 win courtesy of a Sergio Ramos own goal feels just as good — if not better — than a 5-0 destruction. This was a good night.

Raphinha forced off injured for Barcelona against Sevilla

FC Barcelona v Sevilla FC - LaLiga EA Sports

Another injury blow for the Catalans

Barcelona lost Raphinha to injury in the first half of Friday’s La Liga clash against Sevilla.

The Brazilian started the match but was forced off after 35 minutes after appearing to pick up a hamstring problem.

Raphinha seemed to sustain the injury as he stretched to shoot at goal and quickly pulled up as he hit the turf.

The forward was promptly replaced by Fermin Lopez and took his place on the bench where his disappointment was obvious.

Raphinha now joins Pedri and Frenkie de Jong on Barca’s injured list.

It’s not clear how long Raphinha will be out for, but it seems likely he’ll miss Barca’s final two games before the next international break.

The Catalans giants take on Porto next week in the Champions League and then head to Granada before domestic competition pauses yet again.

Barcelona’s first fixture after the international break is against Athletic on October 22.

Barca blast Sevilla for ‘unjustified and inappropriate attack’

FC Barcelona Unveil New Signing Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo

A spat before kick-off

Barcelona have hit out at Sevilla ahead of tonight’s La Liga clash between the two sides after the Andalusians confirmed club officials would boycott the match at Montjuic.

Sevilla issued a statement expressing their “complete outrage” at Barcelona over the Negreira refereeing scandal.

The club added they “have suspended the normal protocol corresponding to the LaLiga match” and “will have no representation in the Montjuic stadium’s VIP box.”

Sevilla’s move has clearly upset Barcelona who have responded with a very strongly-worded statement of their own.

“Barcelona wants to publicly show its rejection of an unjustifed and inappropriate attack by Sevilla, a club that today refused to sit at the table at the instituional lunch between directors prior to tonight’s match between both teams at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, where their representatives also refused to attend the honororay box.

“In addition to this contempt, the Andalusian club has sent a statement to the public in which it shows “indignation and rejection of the practices carried out by former leaders of Barcelona accused of the ‘Negreira case’ and announces its absence in the box at the match today. Barcelona understands that this is an attack against the Catalan institution and an unacceptable offense.

“The so-called ‘Negreira Case’ cannot serve as an excuse for such actions since the judicial procedure is in a very premature investigation phase and the positioning of Sevilla FC clearly prejudges the fact that, in no case, and in none of its preliminaries and hypothetical classifications are accredited.

“Furthermore, the judicial decision notified yesterday does not modify in any way the factual and legal situation of Barcelona in the procedure. It is legally very debatable. It does not become a substantiated evidentiary activity and will be duly reviewed by the club.

“Furthermore, the president of FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta, already intervened months ago in an extraordinary La Liga assembly, expressly called for this case, where he gave all kinds of explanations and clarifications on the matter.

“Sevilla’s action is also completely incongruous given that, on the one hand, it mentions the presumption of innocence and on the other it denies its exercise to Barcelona in the judicial procedure that is currently being processed.

“Given this inadmissible and unjustified position of Sevilla, Barcelona considers all relations with the Sevilla institution broken, as long as it does not rectify its current position.”

Kick off is at 9pm local time.

One of key reason s for this is Eric Garcia finding his best level again. Barça are already rubbing their hands together with the revaluation of a player who had to leave due to the great competition in the centre-back position, but he is an asset that will be taken into account in the future.

Barcelona paying close attention to Juan Miranda's future - SPORT
Juan Miranda has established himself as one of the most promising left-backs on the European market. He ended up leaving Barça due to a lack of opportunities and at Betis he has established himself as a top level player. And now, the Blaugrana are very attentive to his future. Miranda's contract expires in June and Betis are trying to renew him so that he does not leave on a free. If they succeed, Barça would retain fifty percent of the ownership of a player who is starting to have a very high valuation.

‘We need Lewandowski’ - Barca star will wanted in Saudi Arabia

FC Barcelona v Celta Vigo - LaLiga EA Sports

The forward has said he’s not interested

Robert Lewandowski may have said publicly he’s not interested in a move to Saudi Arabia but his words appear to be falling on deaf ears.

Speculation on Thursday claims the striker is still wanted in the Middle East and that he remains one of the “most coveted” players for Saudi sides.

Abha Club player Saad Bguir has made it clear he would love to play alongside the Poland international.

“We need top players like Lewandowski,” he said. “That’s the kind of signing we should make if possible.”

Sport reckon that Abha wanted Lewandowski in the summer and are still pretty keen. The team are managed by former Poland coach Czeslaw Michniewicz who reportedly has a strong relationship with Lewandowski.

Yet Lewandowski couldn’t have made it clearer that he’s not thinking about a move. The former Bayern man has said recently he hasn’t even considered leaving Barcelona to head to Saudi Arabia and that it’s simply not something he’s thinking about.

The results were better than expected

Barcelona have announced profits of €304 million for the 2022/23 financial year, figures that were better than expected, according to the club.

The Catalan giants’ economic problems have been well-documented in recent years but the club has now issued an update on their financial health.

“The FC Barcelona Board of Directors can report that the 2022/23 financial year has closed with a net profit of 304 million euros after taxes, a result higher than that approved in last season’s budget. During the 2022/23 season, FC Barcelona achieved, on a consolidated level, operating income of 1.259 billion euros with operating expenses of 1.165 billion euros.

“These results have been achieved in a season that will go down in history for the record operational figures in the commercial and venue operation sections. The club has made improvements in all lines of business, recording figures higher than expected in each of them.”

Barcelona’s commerical revenue has increased by 43% from last year to €351m. The club have also earned €200m in sponsorship, while bringing in €100m from sales achieved from Barca Stores. The club entered into sponsorship deals with Sportify, Bimbo and Whitebit and new agreements with ScotiaBand and Stanley.

There’s also what is described as a “significant increase” in turnover from the Camp Nou with €121m in income raised. The men’s first team sold over a million tickets over the year, but the women’s team also helped out by bringing in record gate takings for women’s football.

Barca are also reporting a drop in the club’s debt for a second straight year from €680m to €552m and are predicting revenue of €859m for next year with a profit of €11m under the club’s ‘Feasibility Plan.’

Xavi talks Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Barcelona’s defense

Real Mallorca v FC Barcelona - LaLiga EA Sports

Catch up with the latest from the Barcelona boss

Barcelona coach Xavi has been chatting with reporters ahead of the team’s next test against Sevilla on Friday in La Liga.

It’s a quick turnaround for the champions who will be keen to get back to winning ways after dropping points at Real Mallorca.

Xavi spoke about the game, discussed Lamine Yamal’s progress, and his team’s defending ahead of the match.

Here are the best bits:

Xavi on Sevilla

The game with Sevilla will be very difficult, tough, physical. We face the Europa League champions. But we’re at home. We need the fans and the atmosphere at Montjuic to get back on the winning track.

Xavi on Lamine Yamal

He is just 16, and there are moments in-games where it shows. Football is not only played when you have the ball, there’s also the work without it, you have to track back your full-back if you’re a winger and there’s a lot of physical effort involved. That’s when you can tell his age, and that’s why we need to protect him, manage the load and his minutes and the intense efforts he does. But when he plays there’s no question about it, his talent is incredible. I don’t see a bigger problem in the psychological aspect, if I’m honest. He is a really quiet kid, very calm. He’s dealing with everything very naturally.

Xavi on defense

Last year we were brilliant in defence and now not so much. We need to improve and get back last season’s vibes to win titles. We have to be more concentrated. It’s not just the goalkeeper. It is not true that it is difficult for us to play against five-man defenses. We created many chances, against Mallorca there were five or six very clear ones. We failed defensively. We have to improve defensively to win titles.

Xavi on Girona being top

We have Pablo Torre and Eric on loan there, and Eric scored yesterday. It doesn’t surprise me. They have been doing things very well for years, even after being relegated. It is a project with a very clear game model. It is not a coincidence. It is a long-term project with a lot of merit.

Xavi on the Negreira case

You already know my opinion. Take a look at the newspaper archive. I have never had the feeling that the referees benefited us, never. Next week there will be another piece of news about Negreira and the following week...

Xavi on Fermin Lopez

He played on Tuesday and after Frenkie’s injury we needed him, he can be useful to us. As well as the goal, he is dynamic and does things perfectly.

Xavi on Lamine Yamal again

He has ease in one-on-ones, you have to look for him. Like before with Dembele, or with Messi... you have to take advantage of them and empower these types of players. Lamine must be enabled when he is on the pitch.

Xavi on Raphinha

His was the ideal reaction that a footballer should have, especially after the mistake in Getafe. He knows it. He has trained very well, just like Ferran. They deserve to play because they make a difference.

Brighton boss explains why he took Ansu off at half-time

Chelsea v Brighton & Hove Albion - Carabao Cup Third Round
Photo by Sebastian Frej/MB Media/Getty Images

The youngster only played the first 45 minutes

Robert De Zerbi has explained his decision to take off Ansu Fati at half-time of Brighton’s Carabao Cup clash against Chelsea on Wednesday.

Fati only lasted 45 minutes of the defeat, but De Zerbi says it was all part of the plan as he wants the youngster to be involved at the weekend.

“Before the game I spoke with him, because Ansu played 45 minutes on Sunday against Bournemouth,” he told reporters.

“Now, when I decide the first XI I stay in the office with my staff and the medical staff, because Ansu in the last period (with Barcelona) didn’t play so many games.

“If I play him for 90 minutes, 90 minutes, 90 minutes, it’s a big risk for him, for us.

“After the game I spoke with him and I told him he could play only 45 minutes to be in good condition for Saturday, because on Saturday we have another big game.”

Brighton are back in Premier League action at the weekend against Aston Villa.

Xavi determined to be careful with Lamine Yamal

FC Barcelona v Celta Vigo - LaLiga EA Sports

The coach has plans

Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez has made it clear he’s determined to protect Lamine Yamal after watching the 16-year-old break into the first team.

Lamine Yamal has already made history with club and country during his short career, and his early performances have shown exactly why there’s so much hype surrounding Barca’s latest wonderkid.

The teenager put in another impressive cameo against Real Mallorca on Tuesday, with Xavi urging caution after the final whistle.

“He is so young that we want to take care of him,” he told reporters.

“He has a lot of maturity. He can help us a lot, but we have to be careful. Happy with his contribution.

“He has come in very well. He understands very well with Rafa, with Fermín. I know that he can contribute to us and that he is differential. That is what we want. That he generates things for us, but we have to take care of him. He is too young to burn him out.”

Xavi is also taking other measures to protect Lamine Yamal, according to Relevo. The manager is especially keen to avoid inevitable comparisons with Lionel Messi.

The report adds the coaching staff are obviously well aware of the talent they have on their hands but also know there is no rush. They want to avoid “excess euphoria” and will manage his first-team minutes carefully.

Barcelona are concerned about physical setbacks players such as Pedri and Ansu Fati have suffered and want to avoid a repeat with Lamine Yamal.

A round-up of the latest Barcelona news and rumors

Recovery session at the Ciutat Esportiva - FC Barcelona
No times to waste for FC Barcelona at the Ciutat Esportiva following on from the 2-2 draw in Son Moix against Mallorca on Tuesday. Xavi Hernández's squad were in action at the Ciutat Esportiva on Wednesday for a recover session.

When and where to watch FC Barcelona v Sevilla - FC Barcelona
Global guide to kick-off times and broadcasters of the Friday fixture (early Saturday morning in some parts of the world)

Raphinha, lethal from long range - FC Barcelona
Raphinha scored the equaliser against Mallorca on Tuesday, and that now makes him the first player in the league to have scored twice from outside of the area. Players with one such goal so far include his former team-mate Memphis Depay, Toni Kroos of Real Madrid and Barça's very own Ferrán Torres. But two? Raphinha is on his own.

How Sergi Roberto is taking his new role at Barca - SPORT
Sergi Roberto is acting as a model captain in his first few months as the main man in charge of the Azulgrana dressing room. The former youth academy player has seen his prominence decline in recent matches, but this has not affected his attitude. His commitment is maximum to help the team stay in good harmony.

Joao Cancelo ready for a rest and plenty of players ready for the spot - SPORT
Joao Cancelo is on the verge of his first break as a Barça player. The full-back has barely had a rest since his first start and, with a view to Friday's clash against Sevilla, logic suggests that he will start on the bench in order to arrive fresh at Porto next week. Xavi's alternatives are diverse, some of them less natural but perhaps more useful to balance the players' load of minutes.

Alejandro Balde having trouble this season in Barca system - SPORT
Alejandro Balde's attacking edge has been somewhat diluted in recent weeks. The home-grown player is adjusting to a role that is necessary for the team, but which does not allow him to exploit his explosiveness as much. With the square midfield consolidated, Balde is in charge of stretching the team on the left flank.

How will Barça line up against Sevilla?

FC Barcelona v Celta Vigo - LaLiga EA Sports

The champions return home for a big league game

After a wild draw in midweek against Mallorca on the road, Barcelona are back home to continue a busy stretch of fixtures when they meet Sevilla at the Montjuïc Olympic Stadium on Friday night.

The two points dropped on Tuesday mean that Barça’s stay at the top of the La Liga table was short-lived, but they are still unbeaten to start the season and will look to return to winning ways and boost their confidence ahead of a huge Champions League match away to FC Porto next week.

Sevilla lost their first three games in the league but are unbeaten since the international break and always provide Barça with a tough test home or away, and the Catalans must be at their best to get all three points in this one. Here’s how we think Xavi Hernández will line up his troops for Friday’s battle.

Defense

FC Barcelona v Celta de Vigo - LaLiga EA Sports Photo by David S.Bustamante/Soccrates/Getty Images

Xavi has been making sensible rotations during the month of September and using his substitutions wisely to manipulate player minutes and always have a fresh squad on the pitch, but this is a big game that requires the Blaugrana’s best available team so don’t expect the coach to keep his big players out for this one.

With perhaps one exception: João Cancelo has played non-stop since the international break and is widely expected to start this one on the bench ahead of the trip to Porto, and if that’s the case we could see the return of last season’s dominant BACK quartet.

Jules Kounde is a full-time center-back now but might return to right-back for one night only, with Andreas Christensen partnering Ronald Araujo through the middle. Alejandro Balde will complete the backline on the left, looking to return to his best version after a couple of inconsistent performances lately.

Midfield

FC Barcelona v Celta Vigo - LaLiga EA Sports Photo by Alex Caparros/Getty Images

Without Pedri and Frenkie de Jong, Xavi has no choice but to stick with the midfield trio of Ilkay Gündogan, Oriol Romeu and Gavi. Starting Gündogan again is risky but the extended rest between Friday and Wednesday’s short trip to Portugal should give the German enough time to recover, and he can be substituted early depending on how early Barça wrap up a potential victory.

Fermín López scored his first Barça goal and will continue to play serious minutes until Pedri and Frenkie return, and the 20-year-old is clearly ahead of Sergi Roberto in Xavi’s pecking order in midfield. Fermín could be the surprise name in the lineup if Xavi decides to rest Gündogan, so don’t be shocked if the young man follows up on his strong substitute cameo with a start on Friday.

Attack

FC Barcelona v Celta Vigo - LaLiga EA Sports Photo by Alex Caparros/Getty Images

Robert Lewandowski was rested for an hour on Tuesday which was both surprising and smart, and the Pole will surely feature from the start against both Sevilla and Porto after being rotated against Mallorca.

As for Lewy’s partners, Raphinha deserves a second consecutive start on the right after a strong performance on Tuesday. The Brazilian has responded well to the increase competition in attack, and will always be a big part of Xavi’s plans if he consistently performs.

On the left, João Félix should retain his place after an early substitution against Mallorca that suggests Xavi plans to use him again from the beginning in this one. Ferran Torres is also in contention, but it’s more likely we’ll see the Shark come off the bench against Sevilla.

Possible XI (4-3-3): Ter Stegen; Kounde, Araujo, Christensen, Balde; Gündogan, Romeu, Gavi; Raphinha, Lewandowski, Félix

The Catalans want their young star to stay

FC Barcelona are planning to renew Lamine Yamal, and soon. According to the latest reports, the club wants to put pen to paper as early as next week.

It’s understood that his renewal deal has already been agreed to by all parties, weeks ago. It’s now a matter of the physical act of signing the contract.

The new contract extends the young star’s deal to 2026, and sets his release clause at an absurd one billion euro.

Yamal is only 16 but has already made his first-team debuts for both Barcelona and the Spanish national team.

Xavi tipped to rest Cancelo for Barca vs Sevilla

The Catalans are back in action on Friday night

Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez is being tipped to rest Joao Cancelo for Friday night’s La Liga clash against Sevilla.

Xavi has already said he’s planning a couple of rotations for every match currently, and it looks like the new arrival could be due a rest.

Diario Sport reckon that Xavi wants to give Cancelo a breather so that he’s fresh for next week’s Champions League clash against Porto.

Cancelo has made four appearances for Barca since arriving on loan from Manchester City, playing four matches in just 11 days.

Xavi does have several options when it comes to replacing Cancelo. The most obvious choice is probably captain Sergi Roberto who can feature at right-back.

Jules Kounde is also a possibility, if he does not return to the starting XI in central defense, while Xavi has also used Alejandro Balde at right-back on several occasions for Barca.

Eric Garcia sends Girona top of the table in La Liga

Great moment for the defender

Eric Garcia scored his first goal for Girona on Wednesday to send Michel’s side top of the table in Spain after seven matches.

Michel’s men have made an impressive start to the new campaign and have secured top spot ahead of Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Girona had to come from behind to secure the win against Villarreal. Dani Parejo put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot, before Arteam Dovbyk levelled seven minutes later.

Garcia then popped up with a great header to make it 2-1 to the visitors just after the hour mark.

It’s a great moment for Eric who has spoken of how he found it hard to leave Barcelona in the summer but was determined to move to play regular football.

Girona now lead the table by a point from Real Madrid after Los Blancos saw off Las Palmas. Barcelona are a further point behind following Tuesday’s draw at Real Mallorca.

Fermin ‘hurt’ by Barca draw & says scoring ‘least important thing’

Photo by Alvaro Medranda/NurPhoto via Getty Images

The youngster opened his account at Mallorca

Fermín Lopez played a pivotal role in Barcelona’s 2-2 draw against Mallorca at Son Moix. The midfielder made a significant impact coming off the bench, notching his first official goal for Barça, which secured a crucial point for the team.

However, his departure from the match was tinged with mixed emotions as the result didn’t come to fruition.

“I’m happy to have scored my first goal with this shirt, with the club I dreamed of as a child, but it’s the least important thing,” he said.

“We’re going home hurt by the dropped points, but we’re going to correct our mistakes and go on to play Sevilla.

“It’s hard to imagine a year ago that I’d be where I am now. It was a year of learning and it has helped me to fulfill my dream. Now my goal is to continue helping the team.”

For Fermín Lopez, the realization of playing for Barcelona was nothing short of a dream come true. Next, come the results.

Five talking points from Real Mallorca 2-2 Barcelona

RCD Mallorca v FC Barcelona - LaLiga EA Sports

Xavi’s side drop points away from home

Xavi rotates but Barcelona struggle

Xavi was as good as his word against Mallorca, opting to rest Jules Kounde and Robert Lewandowski as he rotated his squad and made five changes.

The Barcelona boss has been reluctant to take Lewandowski out of his team since signing him from Bayern Munich but admitted before the game it was time for a change.

“Lewandowski is on the bench because he has a lot of minutes,” he said. “I think it’s good that some people are resting, we have a good squad.”

Barca may have a good squad but they didn’t look the same without key players such as Lewandowski, Kounde and the injured Frenkie de Jong.

Indeed Xavi ended up calling for Lewandowski just 10 minutes into the second half with his team trailing and in need of goals.

Yet even Lewandowski couldn’t salvage a point for Barcelona. Indeed it was left to Raphinha and Fermin Lopez (with a little help from Lamine Yamal) to save Barca from defeat.

Defensive worries return for Barca

There’s no doubt that defensive errors cost Barcelona against Mallorca, with Xavi bemoaning his side’s “glaring” mistakes after the match.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen was back to his best last season so it was a big surprise to see him gift Mallorca the opener.

A poor pass intended for Oriol Romeu handed the hosts possession in the eighth minute, and Mallorca made the most of it to open the scoring.

The Germany international wasn’t great for the second either. Ter Stegen was too slow to come off his line and was easily beaten in the end.

Barcelona’s goalkeeper wasn’t really helped by Ronald Araujo or Inigo Martinez, who both looked rusty due to a lack of game time, as Barcelona’s defensive vulnerabilites returned.

The visitors also missed De Jong, and dropped points without the Dutchman again, while Romeu looked sluggish defensively and is yet to complete 90 minutes this season.

“Last year we were incredibly solid at the back, but right now this department is costing us points. This is the reality. It’s our weakest point. It’s as clear as that,” said Xavi afterwards as he highlighted his concerns.

The Barcelona boss is right to worry too. Last season’s title win was based on rock solid foundations, but this time around they’ve conceded eight goals in seven La Liga games - the same as in their first 23 games of the last league campaign.

Raphinha’s numbers continue to add up

In attack, Raphinha had another productive night for Barcelona on a night where Ferran Torres was also handed a start but couldn’t continue his recent hot form.

Instead it was the former Leeds United man who scored and assisted. That’s the sixth time this year he’s managed the feat - more than anyone else in Europe’s top five leagues.

Raphinha’s goal was a stunner that really lifted Barca. He latched onto a loose ball and powered a low effort around the goalkeeper and into the far corner. He’s also now into double figures for the year and is top of the pile in La Liga for goals scored from outside the box.

Yet it could have been so much better for Raphinha. The Brazilian had another clear chance to score after his first goal. He was sent through on goal but fired a wild effort miles off target.

Lamine Yamal makes an impact

Raphinha is being pushed all the way for a starting spot by Lamine Yamal who made an impact again after coming off the bench for Barcelona. Indeed he thought he’d won a penalty almost immediately only to see it chalked off by VAR.

The 16-year-old may not have won the penalty but he will surely have won plenty more admirers in his brief cameo. Xavi was urging him to look for the one on one and you could see why, with the teenager just a joy to watch when it comes to taking on players.

He also played a key role in the equaliser. A cute ball in to Raphinha eventually ended up in the back of the net via Fermin Lopez as Barca grabbed a point.

Xavi pledged to take it “step by step” with Lamine after the game, as he’s still just 16, but this was another example of why we’re all so keen to see the youngster playing first-team football.

Redemption for Fermin Lopez

Fermin Lopez hasn’t had the best time at Barcelona recently but was able to put all that behind him with a great goal against Mallorca, his first competitive strike for the senior side.

The youngster asked to play for Barca Atletic during the last international break, only to get himself sent off and hit with a one-match ban.

Yet Xavi kept faith with the midfielder and threw him into the fray in the second half. Fermin made sure the faith was well and truly repaid by making it 2-2.

It was a lovely goal from Barcelona too. Lamine Yamal started things off, Raphinha assisted with a cut back, and Lewandowski then pulled out a dummy to allow Lopez to slot home.

The youngster is having to be patient at Barcelona this season but he’s bound to get more opportunities if he can grasp them like he did against Mallorca.

Deco gives update on Barca’s plans for Felix and Cancelo

FC Barcelona v Royal Antwerp - UEFA Champions League
Photo by David S. Bustamante/Soccrates/Getty Images

Will the club try to sign both players permanently?

Barcelona sporting director Deco spoke about new signings Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo before the team’s clash with Real Mallorca.

There’s plenty of talk already that Barcelona will try to keep the two loanees, but Deco says it’s far too early to think about whether both players will sign permanently.

“The decision is a matter for the coach as well. He is the one in charge. Not only them, but Gündogan, Romeu, Iñigo... all those who have arrived this year are doing well,” he said.

“It is too early to see if they will stay the year that is coming. A loan was the only thing we could do. Now we have to think about the present. Little by little we will see. We are happy with both of them.”

Deco also made it clear he had never had any doubts about Felix despite some eyebrows being raised by Barca’s decision to bring in the forward from Atletico.

“I have known him since he started in Portugal. He has always been different, with a different quality. I am happy that he is with us,” he added.

“There was a lot of talk about his price and little about his game. The important thing is that he is happy. He contributes at a level game and locker room.”

Barcelona will have plenty of work to do if they are to sign both players permanently due to their ongoing financial concerns. Early reports have already claimed it will take a “titanic” effort from Deco to keep hold of the duo.
