Following a long (and costly) international break, Barcelona return to action to begin a crazy October as they travel to beautiful Palma de Mallorca to meet Real Mallorca for some Saturday night La Liga fun.

The next 30 days bring us a total of nine games, all of them very important as Barça look to keep pace with Real Madrid in the league and qualify for the Champions League knockout stages. They face Inter Milan twice over the next 10 days and it certainly feels like those two games will decide the Blaugrana’s European fate, and right after the second Inter match there is that little, unimportant thing called El Clásico.

(Oh, and they also face Bayern Munich in October. And Villarreal. And Athletic Bilbao. And Valencia away. Wait, who made this schedule?)

It is no exaggeration to say that October might just be the most important month of the entire season. Barça might find themselves quite a few points behind the leaders and in real danger of going to the Europa League for the second straight season if things don’t go well, and such a tough, busy calendar coupled with all the injuries make that doomsday scenario not all that unrealistic.

Xavi Hernández has mostly passed the big tests as Barça boss since taking over, but the next four weeks will truly test his coaching acumen. Rotating the squad while still fielding strong teams for every game and putting together winning gameplans against really good opponents time and time again is an enormous challenge for even the very best, most experienced managers in the game. Xavi hasn’t proven himself as one of the best yet, and is certainly not experienced.

We’ll learn a lot about the boss this month, but the players also must step up. The first six weeks of the season have been very good, with six wins in eight games and a near perfect start to the La Liga campaign. The new signings have fit well, the confidence is high and most of the injured players will return sooner rather than later. The team is in solid shape, and now it’s time to show what they’re made of.

Mallorca have made a good start to the season and were a very tough opponent for Real Madrid at the Bernabéu for the first 60 minutes of their encounter a couple of weeks ago (don’t let the final score fool you). They are well coached and have talented attacking players, and only Real Betis have been able to win in Mallorca so far this season.

This won’t be easy, and it’ll be just a taste of what’s to come. Barça must set the tone for the month ahead, and keep their confidence high with a strong performance and a good win.

Let’s dance.

POSSIBLE LINEUPS

Barcelona (4-3-3): Ter Stegen; Roberto, Christensen, Eric, Balde; Gavi, Busquets, Pedri; Raphinha, Lewandowski, Dembélé

Mallorca (3-5-2): Rajkovic; Valjent, Raillo, Nastasic; Maffeo, Sánchez, Battaglia, Rodríguez, Costa; Lee, Muriqi

PREDICTION

Mallorca will play a back five, press high, and counter-attack with pace. It’s pretty much the formula to make things very tough for Barça, but I still believe they’ll find a way to get all three points: 2-1 to the good guys.

Athletic boss responds to Inigo to Barca rumors

Elche CF v Athletic Club - LaLiga Santander
Photo by Aitor Alcalde Colomer/Getty Images

The defender has been linked with a Camp Nou move

Athletic president Jon Uriarte has played down talk of defender Inigo Martinez moving to Barcelona in the summer.

The rumor mill has been convinced the Catalans will go for the 31-year-old despite signing Andreas Christensen and Jules Kounde recently.

There was also talk about a bid last summer but Uriarte says Barcelona have not been in touch to discuss the center-back.

“I haven’t spoken to anyone from Barça,” he said. “We are creating an environment where footballers can feel comfortable.

“He is going to play normally this season because he is a very important player. We would like him to be able to develop his sports career at Athletic. These issues, in any case, we deal with at home.

“I have no problem talking to the players in any renewal. If there is a footballer that we try to retain and he leaves, it will be a disappointment, not a failure because it also depends whether that person wants to stay or not, the salary capacity to compete and personal conditions.”

Martinez’s contract expires next summer which means he will be able to walk away on a free transfer if he does not extend with the Basque side this season.

Xavi talks injuries, Casado, Ansu and right-backs

FC Barcelona v Elche CF - LaLiga Santander

Check out the latest from the Barcelona boss

Barcelona boss Xavi spoke to reporters on Friday to preview his team’s La Liga clash against Real Mallorca.

The Catalans are back in action after the international break but will be without several key players due to injury.

Xavi spoke about his injured players, his options at right-back and how Ansu Fati has been dealing with his Spain snub.

Here are the best bits:

Xavi on right-back options

We have various options. We’ll see how Sergi is. We have also some central defenders that can play in those position or left-backs. We will see what options we have and base our decisions on that.

Xavi on Dembele

Dembele is fine, he can play without problems

Xavi on injures

It frustrates me, yes, but you have to think positively. There are many reasons, the calendar, different training, fatigue, the trips. We are not the only club with injured players. We hope they recover as soon as possible. I’ve already told them they will all be important and now even more so with these four players who are missing.

Xavi on Kounde

With Koundé, as with everyone, it’s about him coming back well, without a deadline.

Xavi on Casado

He’s prepared. Balde is 18 as well and he’s playing. He’s from the youth squad, from La Masia, he’s prepared, he’s ready to play. I’m talking with Rafa Marquez, he’s doing a great job, I’ve seen a lot of them train this week. They are ready to play regardless of their age.

Xavi on Inter

We still have time to recuperate some players. Hopefully they can recover in these next matches. We have a fantastic medical staff and we want the players to recover 100%. It’s unfortunate, we try cover each detail but sometimes things get away from us.

Xavi on Araujo

Araujo’s injury is the one that saddens me the most, because of what he contributed to the team and the time he will be out. It’s a shame. The other players too. That’s football, there are injuries, we have to accept it.

Xavi on Busquets

I said last season, he said it already. He said he will decide at the end of the season. It depends how this season goes, the World Cup. He will put things into perspective. He’s very important for my system.

Xavi on the schedule

It’s a very important time. 12 games, and it’s going to be very demanding, esecially in the Champions League. The league as well. We need to compete. These 8 league games are very important. Not definitive but very important.

Xavi on Balde

All the game are very demanding. They are all worth three points. It depends on the game, the circumstances, the moment. I’ve told you many times we will rotate because of the schedule. All the players are important and they need to be prepared.

Xavi on replacing Kounde with a midfielder

There are various options. Sergi I see more as a midfielder but he can play at right-back. Frenkie or Gavi can adapt to various positions. I have many options but I prefer a more defensive profile in that position.

Xavi on Casado

He is versatile with a lot of soul and he competes very well. Midfielder, full-back, even center back. He’s very positive for the team. He’s good for a coach because he’s another alternative. He’s a player I like very much.

Xavi on Ansu

He’s been great these two weeks. We didn’t train every day but when we did he was great. Great attitude, other players might have been down, but his response was different. He took this as a fuel for motivation.

Lewandowski advises Barca to target Jakub Kiwior - report

SSC Napoli v Spezia Calcio - Serie A
Photo by Franco Romano/NurPhoto via Getty Images

The striker has been impressed

Robert Lewandowski has apparently become an Italian football scout, according to reporting from Tuttosport. The Polish striker has reportedly advised Barcelona to keep an eye on and target Spezia defender Jakub Kiwior.

The defender plays with Lewy on the Polish national team and has made a pretty solid impression. At only 22 years old, Kiwior has plenty of time to continue improving, and Lewy thinks that should happen at Barca according to reports.

During the international break, Robert had some kind words for his national team pal.

“The guy has great potential,” he said.

“During the warm-up of the game with The Netherlands, I thought: ‘Who is this guy?’ Then, during the match, I saw that he is extraordinary.”

We’ll have to see if Barca take his advice and keep an eye on the lad in the coming months.

Juventus keen on signing Jordi Alba in January - report

Cadiz Cf V Fc Barcelona - Liga Santander
Photo By Joaquin Corchero/Europa Press via Getty Images

The left-back has been benched by Xavi this season

After becoming pretty friendly with the bench at Barcelona this year, Jordi Alba is reportedly on the wishlist for Juventus in the winter window.

The Spanish left-back has fallen down the pecking order of full-backs when all are healthy at Barca, and a move to Serie A may be in the cards in a few months.

Alba was linked with a move to Inter on deadline day but ended up staying at Barca, although it’s not clear how much he’s enjoying life as a substitute.

His future may depend on how healthy the Barca defense is come January after the World Cup ravages players' health.

Barca are already losing defenders left, right and center during international duty, and things may be tricky again as the schedule intensifies.

Juventus are in desperate need of really any influx of talent. They’re floundering domestically and Alba still has something left in the tank. Now it just comes down to details.

Premier League vs La Liga All-Star game planned - report

FBL-ESP-LIGA-BARCELONA-VALLADOLID
Photo by JOSEP LAGO/AFP via Getty Images

The idea is being talked about

Plans are reportedly being put in place which would see a Premier League All Star XI take on a La Liga All Star team.

The Times are reporting that “plans for All-Star games are set to be revived” with a Premier League team potentially set to take on sides from La Liga, the Bundesliga, and maybe more countries too.

The idea has been in the news recently as new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly mentioned it and promptly came in for plenty of criticism.

However, it seems the idea is still being discussed and could happen, with games being “staged around the world as a means of growing global audiences.”

Club executives are apparently thinking about the idea which is “likely to be pursued among new ways to keep growing audiences and enhancing overseas TV rights.”

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was dismissive of an All Star game because of the congested nature of the fixture list. However, The Times reckon the games would take place “in the summer months, or a winter break.”

The report reckons the Premier League clubs may push for the idea soon but it remains to be seen “what response it will receive from foreign leagues.”

Man City will listen to offers over €90m for Bernardo - report

Manchester City Training
Photo by Matt McNulty - Manchester City/Manchester City FC via Getty Images

The Portuguese star is seen as still unsettled over his future

Manchester City are set for contract renewal talks with Bernardo Silva, whose future is considered unsettled. And they will listen to offers starting at 80 million pounds, which is about 90 million euros for the midfielder, according to the latest report from England.

FC Barcelona have long been linked with Silva, who has grown into a star at City. No formal bids were tabled, but the interest was always there. Despite this, City and their manager, ex-Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola, want Silva to stay with them.

Despite this, City are said to be willing to listen to good offers for him. Silva still has a contract for two-and-a-half years and is a key player for Guardiola, who signed him from AS Monaco.

Discussions are said to take place over the next few months which will dictate both Silva’s future and the Citizens’ long-term planning in the transfer market.

Where would Lionel Messi play in Xavi’s Barcelona?

Barcelona v Real Sociedad - La Liga
Photo by Quality Sport Images/Getty Images

The rumors suggest it could happen

It’s far from assured, but the rumblings have started and the rumors keep increasing. A return to FC Barcelona for Lionel Messi after a two-year absence.

It’s certainly possible once the Argentine star finishes his two-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain. Relationships will have to be mended, a salary and other terms will have to be negotiated, but it’s all possible.

The question would then become: where does he play?

At the moment, for PSG, he plays in a #10 position, somewhere between an attacking midfielder and a second striker. He doesn’t drift into the box much, instead, he hangs back from three-fourths of the way into the edge of the box. It’s a role Italians would call the trequartista.

Such a position does not exist in Xavi’s Barcelona, which has tended to play either 4-3-3 or 3-4-3. In either case, the forward line is comprised of a center forward and two wingers. The midfield has two different configurations, but neither has a #10.

Should Xavi change his system? Perhaps, but maybe PSG’s system is not the best for Messi anyway. They have Neymar and Kylian Mbappé, Barça don’t. Barcelona’s main concern will be fitting Robert Lewandowski into the attack, and other key pieces such as Pedri into midfield.

At the moment, Messi’s clearest spot in Xavi’s system would be in the attack, as a right-winger. He can’t fit into the midfield (remember, there is no #10) and there would be no reason to displace Lewandowski from the striker position (you’d do whatever possible to have both at the same time on the pitch and Lewy needs to play as a #9.)

The issue is that Messi is far from an orthodox right-winger. In fact, he’s almost not one at all. You want him on the ball in central areas often to play his magical passes, and you want him getting chances to shoot from the edge of the box as well.

Argentina’s system perhaps suits Messi better, so if one were to look for inspiration one could look there.

Messi plays as a nominal right-winger there, but he’s given essentially a free role to cut inside and operate in the middle as he pleases. In order to make this work, Argentina’s left-winger (Ángel Di María) has to work hard to help the three-man midfield cover gaps. This is worth it if the team works hard and combines well with Messi. And of course, Messi needs to be on song for it to work - usually not an issue for Argentina.

This is also the traditional system Barcelona used to accommodate Messi as far back as the Luis Enrique era.

It’s not really Xavi’s system, though, which has had Ousmane Dembélé and Raphinha playing more traditional winger roles. But it stands to reason why - they are not Messi, nor do they play like him.

All reports say Xavi wants Messi in his team, which suggests he already has an idea of how it will all play out. It will be interesting to see how that plays out... if indeed it ever does. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. A reunion is certainly possible, and some may even say probable, but it is far, far, far from assured.

Barcelona see Ruben Neves as Sergio Busquets’s replacement - report

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Manchester City - Premier League
Photo by Jack Thomas - WWFC/Wolves via Getty Images

Martín Zubimendi is another highly rumored option

FC Barcelona are targeting Ruben Neves as the replacement for veteran Sergio Busquets, after the latter is seen as likely to leave next summer.

According to the latest from the gossip pages, Neves would come at a fair price from Wolverhampton Wanderers FC while Martín Zubimendi’s price could become an obstacle to his signing.

Zubimendi has been rumored as Busquets’s replacement, but Barça fear Real Sociedad will be inflexible with his price. That is the reason the media has now moved onto Neves, who is ending his contract in 2024. The hope is that Wolves will have to sell him for much less than the 50 million euro or so they demanded for him this past summer, as they will not want to enter into the final season of his contract.

Zubimendi’s contract ends in 2025 but it is understood La Real will attempt to extend his deal until 2027, and take his release clause from 60 million to 90 million.

In addition, Nico González will return from his loan to Valencia CF, hopefully stronger than ever. The other option for the position would be Frenkie de Jong. Xavi has used the Dutchman in that position this season, although whether it’s his best role is certainly questionable.

Xavi calls up Marc Casado to training amid injury crisis

Olot v FC Barcelona - Pre-Season Friendly

The 19-year-old was with the first team on Thursday

Xavi called up 19-year-old Marc Casado to Barcelona training on Thursday as he looks for options at right-back after injuries to Jules Kounde, Ronald Araujo, and Hector Bellerin.

Casado was given the nod and could now be in the matchday squad for Saturday’s trip to Real Mallorca in La Liga.

The 19-year-old did feature for Barcelona in pre-season but then dropped back down to Barca Atletic where he’s featured in all five of the team’s games this season.

Casado usually plays in midfield but does have experience as a full-back and has been tipped to play in the position by Carles Martinez the coach who brought him to Barcelona.

“I was surprised when I saw him as a winger, but he is a very intelligent player who understands the game. It is true that he is used to playing as a midfielder but he is dynamic and fast,” he said.

“I think Marc could adapt. He can play as a more internalized winger or close out three playing like Koundé was doing.”

There will no doubt be questions about the right-back position and Marc Casado for Xavi in tomorrow’s pre-match press conference as the Barcelona coach looks forward to Saturday’s game.

Barca’s doors will always be open to Messi - Marquez

‘This has been his home for a long time’

Barcelona Atletic coach Rafa Marquez says the club’s doors “will always be open” to Lionel Messi amid growing speculation about a return for the GOAT.

Vice-president Eduard Romeu has said this week it would be “financially viable” for Messi to come home once his contract with PSG expires at the end of the season.

Marquez has been asked about his former team-mate and would not be at all surprised to see Messi back at the club.

“Talking about Barcelona and Leo Messi is practically the same,” he said.

“This has been his home for a long time. He has made history with the club and I think the doors will always be open.

“Personally, I don’t see Leo wearing colors other than those of Barça or the Argentine team.”

The Barca Atletic coach also spoke about Xavi and how the two are working together this season.

“We know each other very well, we have a very good friendship and now we are back working for the same club,” he explained.

“We talk once or twice a week. The communication we have is very important because we have to try to be at the service of the first team, they are the most important in the chain.”

Marquez’s team have made an unbeaten start to the season and return to action at the weekend against Real Sociedad B.

Who will Xavi use at right-back for Barcelona?

FC Barcelona v Elche CF - LaLiga Santander

The manager is short of options

Barcelona are back in action after the international break on Saturday against Real Mallorca and face a hectic month of fixtures in La Liga and the Champions League.

The Catalans are also going to have to cope without some key players after being hit by injuries during the interntional break, particularly in defence.

Ronald Araujo, Jules Kounde and Hector Bellerin are all out leaving Xavi pretty short of options when it comes to the right-back slot.

So, who will the Barca manager choose?

FC Barcelona v Elche CF - LaLiga Santander Photo by Eric Alonso/Getty Images

On the plus side, the Barca boss does have plenty of options. Sergi Roberto is arguably the most obvious choice but there are question marks over his fitness.

Roberto has been out with an Achilles problem and it’s still not clear if he is quite ready to return. You suspect he won’t be risked right now given Barca’s injury problems.

Xavi could therefore deploy a center-back on the right with Gerard Pique, Andreas Christensen or Eric Garcia all available. Left-backs Marcos Alonso and Alejandro Balde are also both fit and could switch flanks, something Sergino Dest did for Barca last season.

FC Bayern München v FC Barcelona: Group C - UEFA Champions League Photo by DAX Images/Orange Pictures/BSR Agency/Getty Images

The Barcelona boss could also tweak his formation and go with three central defenders instead or he could also look to Barca Atletic and call up a youngster from Rafa Marquez’s side.

Alvaro Nunez has been first choice in the early weeks of the season, but Xavi did take a look at Marc Casado in pre-season. Alvaro Sanz’s name is also being thrown about as the midfielder has played at full-back before.

Who do you think should feature at right-back for Barcelona? Let us know your thoughts and teams in the comments below!

PSG chief suggests UEFA investigate Barca’s summer dealings

Paris Saint-Germain - Press Conference
Photo by Aurelien Meunier - PSG/PSG via Getty Images

So this happened....

Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona aren’t really the best of friends. Both do their finances in interesting and different ways, and that seems to bother the French club’s president Nasser Al-Khelaif. The manner in which Barcelona conducted themselves this summer wasn’t in line with the squeaky clean business of PSG apparently.

In an interview with Politico, the PSG pres was asked if the Barcelona dealings that allowed them to sign a few big names over the summer was fair.

“Is this fair? No, it’s not fair. ... Is it legal? I’m not sure,” he said.

“If they allow them, others will do the same. UEFA of course have their own [financial] regulations. For sure they’re going to look at everything.”

Al-Khelaif | Source

PSG calling Barca out for sketch finances is hilarious and hyprocritical, so I’ll take more of it, please.

Messi returning to Barca is ‘financially viable’ - Romeu

Jamaica v Argentina

The GOAT will be a free agent in the summer

Barcelona’s economic vice-president Eduard Romeu has been talking about the possibility of Lionel Messi returning to the Camp Nou in the summer of 2023.

There have been rumors already that Messi will leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season when his contract at the club expires.

It’s not clear what Messi’s plans are, and it’s thought he won’t make a decision until after the World Cup, but Romeu says that Barca could afford to bring the GOAT back.

“It would be possible financially because if he returned it would be as a free agent,” he said.

“But it’s a decision which has to be made by the coaching staff and the player. It doesn’t correspond to me [to make those decisions], but it would be viable.

“We have completely changed the structure. From having players with high level of salary and an already large squad at the average age level, we have gone on to have players with projection and market levels, which will surely be important.

“Without boasting, we have saved Barca, but the club is not economically healthy yet. There’s still a need for austerity and there is a lot of work to do.

“[I predict] Barca will be healthy within five years [of our mandate]. In the 24-25 season, we will be at the level we should be.”

Source | Catalunya Radio

Xavi was asked about a possible Messi return during the club’s pre-season tour of the United States and said it was impossible right but now that he would like to have the Argentine back in the future.

President Joan Laporta has also spoken about how he hopes “the Messi chapter isn’t over” and that the GOAT deserves a “more beautiful ending” at Barcelona.

Luis Enrique: I need to see Ansu playing for Barcelona

FC Barcelona v Elche CF - LaLiga Santander

Will the teenager go to the World Cup?

Spain boss Luis Enrique spoke briefly about Barcelona striker Ansu Fati after seeing his team beat Portugal 1-0 to qualify for next summer’s Nations League Final Four.

Ansu was left out of Spain’s latest squad with Lucho explaining he didn’t think the teenager was quite ready to be called up.

The Barcelona’s striker omission suggests he has his work cut out making the Spain squad for the World Cup, and Lucho admits he has some tough decisions to make.

“It can be a list of 26 or 24. I have not decided. I need to see Ansu Fati play for Barça,” he said.

“Laporte is already recovered and training with his team and Oyarzabal I prefer not to say anything. Let’s see how he recovers.

“But it is true that it will be a difficult list and that not everyone I would like will be able to enter.”

Ansu has played eight times for Barcelona so far this season but only once as a starter and has stiff competition for a place in the attack following the arrivals of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha.

Hector Bellerin set to miss 3-4 weeks with calf injury

Another defender out

Hector Bellerin is the latest player to be ruled out by Barcelona after suffering a calf injury.

The right-back underwent tests on the problem this morning and has joined Jules Kounde and Ronald Araujo in the sidelines.

Here’s Barcelona’s official statement:

“Tests carried out on Wednesday have confirmed that the first team player Héctor Bellerín has an injury to the soleus muscle in his left calf. He is unavailable for selection and his recovery will dictate his return.

“Bellerín, who has made two appearances this season, felt some discomfort in his calf in Tuesday’s training session.”

Relevo are reporting that Bellerin will miss “3-4 weeks” which means he will miss both Champions League games against Inter and El Clasico.

Bellerin’s injury leaves Xavi short of options at right-back, although Sergi Roberto is thought to be ready to return for the Catalans after Achilles trouble.

Barca target Zubimendi tipped to renew with Real Sociedad

Real Sociedad v RCD Espanyol - LaLiga Santander
Photo by Juan Manuel Serrano Arce/Getty Images

The midfielder will sign on until 2027

Martin Zubimendi has regularly been linked with Barcelona recently, with the Catalans thought to be considering bringing him in to replace Sergio Busquets.

However, the latest update suggests that the 23-year-old midfielder could be about to renew his contract with Real Sociedad.

El Diario Vasco reckon Zubimendi is “close” to a new deal after months of negotiations. The midfielder’s new contract will run until 2027 and will see his buyout clause increased.

Zubimendi’s current clause is just €60 million but it seems almost certain that will rise given the reported interest in the midfielder.

Barcelona have been linked with plenty of midfielders, but it’s Zubimendi and Ruben Neves whose names keep on cropping up.

However, it’s still not clear if Busquets will leave when his contract expires in the summer. The midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to MLS but has said while on Spain duty he has not made his mind up yet.

Darwin Nunez pays tribute to injured Ronald Araujo

Uruguay v Canada - International Friendly

Classy stuff from the striker

Ronald Araujo flew out to Finland on Tuesday where he will undergo surgery on a thigh injury that will likely keep him out of the 2022 World Cup.

Meanwhile, his Uruguay team-mates were in friendly action against Canada in Bratislava but the defender was very much in the squad’s thoughts.

Striker Darwin Nunez paid tribute to Araujo before game by holding up his shirt to fans before the game and then went on to help Uruguay win 2-0.

Nicolas de la Cruz opened the scoring after six minutes and Nunez finished Canada off with the second of the match after 33 minutes.

Coach Diego Alonso spoke about Araujo after the match and insisted his World Cup dreams are not over yet. “Ronald has clear medical options to reach the World Cup,” he said before insisting he “will wait until the end” for Araujo.

The defender will undergo surgery on Wednesday and Barca are likely to offer an indication of how long he will be out for at that time. It’s thought Araujo will be sidelined for around three months.

Nico backed to succeed Busquets by Garcia Pimienta

‘He is perfect’

There’s no doubt that Xavi and the folks at Barcelona are considerate of the future, as well as the day-to-day of the club. The present function of the club’s midfield features heavy usage of Sergio Busquets. However, in the future, that won’t be the case.

Once Busquets eventually leaves the club, there will be questions about who will replace him as the leader of Barcelona’s defensive core.

Former Barca player and youth team coach Francisco Garcia Pimienta commented on that very situation. The current Las Palmas coach believes that Nico will be the perfect functional replacement for Busquets when the time comes.

“I have a lot of faith in Nico, he is more than usable for Barca. He is the perfect player to carry out the function of Busquets in the first team.

“He went up to Barça B with me when he was in his last year and I saw that he understands the position in the pivot game.

“Last season Nico was already at Sergio Busquets’ side and, from my point of view, he meets all the requirements, he is the perfect player, ideal to play for Barça, although that does not mean that his game is only specifically for Barcelona.”

Pimienta | Cadena SER

There’s no doubt that plenty of pressure will be applied to Nico. He has the talent, now it's just gotta be the correct timing.

Rennes boss explains failed Samuel Umtiti transfer

Granada CF v FC Barcelona - La Liga Santander
Photo by Jose Breton/Pics Action/NurPhoto via Getty Images

Bruno Genesio ‘was convinced’ he could get the best out of the defender

Samuel Umtiti’s spell at Barcelona is over, at least for now. The French defender left the Camp Nou on a year-long loan to Lecce in Serie A. The deal took a bit longer than expected but eventually, everyone came to an agreement.

The timing was in part due to a failed transfer to Rennes. The French club was closely linked with Umtiti during the summer and was close to a deal. However, seemingly, at the last second, the deal fell through. Rennes boss Bruno Genesio chatted about the missed deal in an interview this week.

“Were there any doubts about his fitness? That’s a bit of it, yes. I was convinced I could bring him back to his best level because he is a boy I know very well, because I’ve talked a lot with him and because he is such a hard worker that there was no reason why he couldn’t find a good level.”

Génésio | Source

There’s still a chance for a permanent deal involving Umtiti and Rennes. Samuel is only gone on a loan and when that loan is up, hopefully after an injury-free season, there will be suitors for the talented Frenchman.

Another blow for Xavi’s side

Barcelona have been hit by yet another injury blow ahead of their next La Liga clash against Real Mallorca, with right-back Hector Bellerin joining the club’s injury list.

The club have confirmed that Bellerin felt some discomfort during Tuesday’s training session and will now undergo further tests.

Here’s the club’s official statement:

“Héctor Bellerín has reported difficulties with the soleus in his left leg during Tuesday morning’s training session.

“On Wednesday, the defender will undergo a series of tests to determine the full extent of the trouble.”

It’s not clear yet how serious the problem is but it’s probably safe to say he will also be sidelined for the weekend’s match at Son Moix.

Xavi will have some tough decisions to make regarding how his backline shapes up for the game, although he does still have Eric Garcia, Gerard Pique, Andreas Christensen, Marcos Alonso, Jordi Alba and Alejandro Balde available.

Ter Stegen explains upturn in form for Barcelona

The keeper has looked back to his best

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has been chatting about how his summer break has helped him return to his best form this season.

The goalkeeper has shone for Barcelona in the early weeks of the campaign and has only conceded once in La Liga.

Ter Stegen has also looked good back in the Germany team over the international break after missing his team’s Nations League fixtures over the summer.

The goalkeeper opted to take a break after the end of last season instead and says the rest from the game has done him the world of good.

“The summer has gone very well for me, because I could relax and free myself a little from everything, but above all mentally, because I did almost nothing while I was on vacation and from time to time it is necessary to recharge batteries,” he said. “And so I was able to start well and be in good condition.”

Source | Mundo Deportivo

Ter Stegen will now head back to Barcelona after featuring twice for Germany against Hungary and England. The keeper took over from first choice stopper Manuel Neuer who was ruled out after testing positive for Covid-19.

The defender will likely miss the World Cup

Ronald Araujo has opened up on his decision to undergo surgery after Barcelona confirmed the defender will go under the knife this week.

The center-back’s decision to have an operation on his thigh problem means he’s almost certain to miss the World Cup which starts in November.

There had been rumors that he’d come under pressure from Uruguay to avoid surgery, and Araujo has now issued a statement on social media to set the record straight.

“I want to make clear the reasons why I made my decision, to avoid speculation. I love my country and I love my selection. After consultation with several professionals, we decided that the best thing is surgical intervention,” he wrote.

“Here it is not about choosing one or the other, it is about health and getting back to 100% as soon as possible. Personally, these are very difficult times and I take this opportunity to thank everyone for the support I am receiving. With faith and hard work I will do my best to return as quickly as possible. Hugs and blessings!”

Barcelona are expected to offer an update on when Araujo is due back after his surgery this week. Initial reports suggest the defender will miss upto three months.

The trio are back from international duty

Barcelona have had a tricky international break with injuries but were able to welcome back three key players on Monday for training.

Robert Lewandowski, Ousmane Dembele, and Andreas Christensen were all back from their national teams and took part in a session.

Xavi will be relieved to see all three players fit and available, particularly with Dembele having suffered from a calf issue while with France. Christensen will also be needed after Barca lost Ronald Araujo and Jules Kounde to injury.

The team are now looking ahead to their next match against Real Mallorca on the weekend but will also be without Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay for the match due to injury.

Xavi will be hoping that no more of his players pick up problems in the coming days.

Barca’s Spain contingent play Portugal on Tuesday in the Nations League. Raphinha is also in action with Brazil against Tunisia and Franck Kessie’s Ivory Coast take on Guinea in a friendly.

More problems for Xavi’s side

Barcelona have confirmed both Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay are out of action after sustaining injuries over the international break.

The two players both went off in the win over Poland and were then released by the Netherlands and allowed to return to Barca.

Both De Jong and Memphis have now undergone tests and Barca have confirmed details of the two injuries.

“Tests carried out today have confirmed hamstring injuries for both Frenkie de Jong and Memphis,” read a statement.

“Midfielder Frenkie de Jong has an elongation of the semitendinosus muscle in his left thigh. He is not available for selection and his recovery will dictate his return.

“Striker Memphis has an injury to the biceps femoris muscle in his left thigh. He is not available for selection and his recovery will dictate his return.”

Early reports suggest that De Jong’s injury is not too serious and he will only be out for a week or so. Memphis is expected to be sidelined for longer and may miss a month.

Barca’s squad depth will be tested as World Cup approaches

FC Barcelona - Elche CF - La Liga
Photo by Xavier Bonilla/NurPhoto via Getty Images

It could be a scary October if Xavi’s team can’t stay healthy

This season was always going to be one unlike any other because of the unprecedented scheduling of this World Cup in Qatar.

Managers and players have been lamenting for years the lack of recovery time between games, and the increased risk of injury that comes as a consequence.

The first international break is already raising the alarm bells for Barcelona with Ronald Araujo and Jules Kounde going down for an extended period, right before a string of games that could prove decisive for the Catalan’s ambition to win trophies now.

Just a year ago, Barcelona’s lack of depth turned an already difficult situation for Ronald Koeman into a crisis he couldn’t overcome when the injury bug struck, resulting in the team missing out on the Champions League knockout round.

Rayo Vallecano v FC Barcelona - La Liga Santander Photo by Denis Doyle/Getty Images

Xavi came in, and because of the reinforcements he was given in January, was able to salvage what was left of the season, keeping the situation from devolving further.

Going into the summer, he made an effort to reinforce each position with quality backups, and we’re now seeing why that approach was so critical.

Barcelona can’t afford to make excuses. They need to stay on track, and keep winning games, regardless of the obstacles that are thrown at them.

The starting eleven was just starting to come into focus. Now those best-laid plans are being shaken up. Every player on this roster needs to stay focused and ready to contribute when their name is called on, because inevitably they will all have an important part to play at some point, and they’ll need to be able to pick up where their fallen comrade left off.

FC Barcelona v Elche CF - LaLiga Santander Photo by Alex Caparros/Getty Images

Right now, it’s the defensive backs that are in trouble. Araujo and Jules Kounde not only are the best at the position, but they have brought a very specific profile. Substituting them in for Eric Garcia and Gerard Pique changes the tactical dynamic completely. Xavi needs to have the team prepared to make adjustments as new players’ strengths and weaknesses are introduced to the lineup.

It has been refreshing to see this team become so much more solid in the back. With Pique, and maybe even the reintroduction of Jordi Alba at some point, it may seem like Barca is taking a step back. Hopefully, that’s not the case, and the old guard can learn something from the young guns who replaced them.

Maybe their veteran experience could be an asset as the season progresses. Ultimately, it will come down to minimizing costly mistakes, and playing with tempo that leverages the array of attacking talent up front, taking pressure off the back four and their lack of defensive prowess.

But what happens if Robert Lewandowski or Ousmane Dembele go down? No one wants to think about it, but there needs to be a plan.

FC Barcelona v Viktoria Plzen: Group C - UEFA Champions League Photo by Alex Caparros/Getty Images

What about Pedri? We already know what happened last season as a result of him being overused and unable to help a team that was becoming dependent on his ability to organize the midfield.

That’s why rotation will continue to be critical.

Barcelona can’t depend on anyone. From game to game, Xavi needs to be able to trust that he can call the name of any player, and that they will have the hunger to perform.

The club has invested heavily to build a deep team that could withstand the challenges of this World Cup season, and beyond.

Ready or not, throw caution to the wind, because a player like Ansu Fati will be needed.

FC Barcelona v Elche CF - LaLiga Santander Photo by Alex Caparros/Getty Images

Ferran Torres, in form or not, and regardless of whether he’s your cup of tea, will need to step up and be the player that Xavi and Luis Enrique believe he can become.

With proven goal scorer Memphis Depay out, Ferran may need to deputize as Lewandowski’s center forward backup.

Pablo Torre, don’t get too discouraged or settled in at Barca Atletic. You may just be needed after all to give relief to a Barcelona midfield that is also moonlighting as the starting trio for the Spanish national team.

FC Barcelona v Viktoria Plzen: Group C - UEFA Champions League Photo by Jose Breton/Pics Action/NurPhoto via Getty Images

And who knows, maybe Xavi will decide to use Frenkie de Jong as a central defender if the recovery of Araujo and Kounde drags on, and their replacements don’t show they have what it takes.

So many possibilities are on the table. Xavi needs to become a weatherman and start forecasting the future, because once the storm hits, his men need to be brave and sail through it head on.

This is a fascinating season to be a manager with each decision made loaded with consequences.

Coming out of this international break, it’s back to business, even if new and unproven faces are the ones doing the work on the field.

There will be opportunities aplenty in October.

Who will be the most motivated to take advantage of them?

Barcelona confirm Ronald Araujo will undergo surgery

The defender is likely to miss the World Cup

Barcelona have confirmed Ronald Araujo will undergo surgery on a thigh injury picked up while playing for Uruguay over the international break.

The defender has opted to go under the knife and is now set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Here’s the club’s official statement:

“Ronald Araujo will undergo surgery on Wednesday for the adductor longus tendon avulsion he has in his right thigh. The operation will be carried out by Dr. Lasse Lempainen, under the supervision of the Club’s medical staff, in Turku, Finland.”

It’s a brave decision too as it’s thought he will miss the World Cup but the hope is he will be able to play the second half of Barca’s season. An official announcement on Araujo is expected shortly.

The news is a massive blow as Araujo is one of the first names on Xavi’s teamsheet and there’s no doubt he will be missed.

Yet Xavi does have other options he can use at center-back and will now have to rethink his backline, particularly with Jules Kounde also sidelined at present.

Get well soon, Ronald Araujo!

Time and date for Real Madrid vs Barca confirmed

Not long to wait now!

The date and time for the first Clasico of the 2022-23 season has been confirmed with Barcelona scheduled to take on Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday, October 16 at 4:15pm CET.

Both sides are set for a hectic October with Barca due to play Real Mallorca and Celta in La Liga and Inter twice in the Champions League before heading to the Spanish capital.

Real Madrid are set to play Getafe and Osasuna in the Spanish top flight and also play a European double-header against Shakhtar Donetsk.

The clash between the two old rivals will be eagerly anticipated as always and is likely to have a bearing on this season’s title race.

Real Madrid have been perfect so far and haven’t dropped a single point, while Barca’s only dropped points in La Liga came on the opening day with a 0-0 draw at Rayo.

Los Blancos have had the upper hand in this fixture recently but Barca will fancy their chances of taking three points will need no reminding they beat Carlo Ancelotti’s side in pre-season.

Barca’s top transfer priority is a new right-back - report

FC Barcelona v Elche CF - LaLiga Santander

The club could spend big again next summer

Barcelona are already thinking about signings for next summer and have reportedly made a new right-back their top priority.

The Catalans have a few options this season with center-backs Jules Kounde and Ronald Araujo having featured out wide and Hector Bellerin and Sergi Roberto also options.

Gerard Romero has been talking to Carpetas Blaugranas and reckons that “the most important objective” the club has right now is to sign a right-back.

Bellerin will be allowed to leave, possibly for Real Betis, when his contract expires and Roberto could follow him out of the door as a free agent.

The departure of both players would leave Barca without any specialized right-backs which means the club could sign “one or two right backs and make a big outlay.”

There’s no word yet on who Barcelona might be targeting but you can bet the rumor mill will churn out plenty of names in the coming weeks and months.

You can also let us know which right-back you would love to see Barca sign in the comments below!

International watch: Dembele not risked as France lose to Denmark

France v Austria: UEFA Nations League - League Path Group 1
Photo by Sebastian Frej/MB Media/Getty Images

The Barcelona forward stayed on the bench

Barcelona have endured a difficult international break so far with key players picking up injuries but were offered some respite on Sunday.

Ousmane Dembele, who Franch coach Didier Deschamps has admitted has been suffering some calf discomfort, was not risked during Les Bleus’ clash with Denmark.

Reports ahead of the game suggested that Dembele had made it clear he wasn’t going to take any risks as his “absolute priority” is to help Barca this season.

Deschamps left Dembele on the bench for the match and did not call for the forward during the game which his team ended up losing 2-0.

Indeed it was a good night for Denmark and Andreas Christensen. The Barca center-back had a fine game and played all 90 minutes.

Xavi will no doubt be breathing a sigh of relief and will now be able to welcome Dembele and Christensen back to training ahead of Barca’s clash with Real Mallorca at the weekend.

Dembele trained separately from his team-mates ahead of the Denmark clash but will hopefully be available for Saturday’s match.

Christensen will also be needed as Barca will definitely be without Ronald Araujo and Jules Kounde for the game.

Memphis Depay and Frenkie de Jong are also doubts after being released from the Netherlands squad due to injury.

WATCH: Lewandowski comes up with classy assist

Wales v Poland: UEFA Nations League - League Path Group 4

More great stuff from the Barcelona striker

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski was in Nations League action on Sunday night for Poland against Wales and caught the eye with a lovely assist.

The 34-year-old set up the opening goal for team-mate Karol Swiderski after 57 minutes of the game with a brilliant flick.

The goal was enough for Poland to win the game in Cardiff. The result means Wales are relegated from the top tier while it’s a good result for Poland after their 2-0 defeat to the Netherlands last time out.

Barcelona will also be thrilled to hear that Lewandowski made it through the game without picking up an injury and can now head back to his club side and get ready for the return of La Liga.

The Catalans head to Real Mallorca on Saturday in the Spanish top flight and will be hoping to continue the fine form Xavi’s side showed before the international break.

Kounde hoping to be fit in time for El Clasico - reports

FC Barcelona v Elche CF - LaLiga Santander

The Frenchman is out with a hamstring injury

Barcelona defender Jules Kounde is reportedly hopeful he will be fit in time for El Clasico on September 16 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Frenchman has been ruled out with a hamstring injury sustained while on international duty and has since returned to Barcelona.

Diario AS are reporting that Barca are hopeful Kounde will only miss three weeks, provided his recovery goes according to plan.

Kounde would therefore be ready in time for the trip to Madrid, although it’s not clear if he would be available to start the match or be just fit enough for the bench.

Mundo Deportivo have a similar line and reckon Kounde is hoping to come back earlier than expected and is determined to take on Los Blancos.

The defender has reportedly already spoken to Xavi about his situation and told the coach he will do everything he can to be fit in time for the game.

If Kounde did return in time then it means he would only miss La Liga games against Real Mallorca and Celta and the Champions League double header against Inter.

The Frenchman’s return would be a boost, particularly with Ronald Araujo set to miss out, although Barca certainly won’t want to rush his return and risk a relapse.

Barcelona left-back Jordi Alba has admitted he’s grateful that Spain boss Luis Enrique still trusts him after featuring against Switzerland in the Nations League.

The 33-year-old is no longer a guaranteed starter for Barcelona but did feature for his national team and scored in the 2-1 defeat on Saturday.

Alba, who has not always seen eye to eye with Lucho, thanked his boss after the game for continuing to trust him.

“I am grateful that the manager continues to trust in me and it’s on me to return that trust on the pitch,” he said.

“Today we had a good opportunity and now we must win against Portugal. We will go with a lot of hunger to win and to get ourselves into the Final Four.

“Today’s defeat was a shame, above all for the people who support us. We were very thick in the first half and they went ahead on a set play. We managed the equaliser which is the most difficult part but they scored right after in another unfortunate set play.”

Spain now head to Portugal after suffering a first home defeat in four years. Lucho’s side need a win in their final group match to make it to next summer’s Nations League finals.

Kounde sends message to Barca fans after injury blow

The defender is feeling positive

Barcelona defender Jules Kounde has sent out an upbeat message after being ruled out of action with a hamstring injury.

The Catalan giants confirmed on Saturday that Kounde has been sidelined after picking up a problem playing for France against Austria in the Nations League.

Kounde has now taken to social media to share his thoughts on how he’s feeling right now.

“The game is gonna test you, never fold. Stay ten toes down. It’s not on you, it’s in you,” he wrote on Instagram. “I’m working to return back as soon as possible, see you soon.”

Barcelona have not given any indication of how long Kounde might be out of action for but reports are claiming he will miss around four weeks.

If the reports are accurate it means Kounde will miss La Liga games against Real Mallorca, Celta, Real Madrid, Villarreal and Athletic.

The Frenchman will also have to sit out the two Champions League clashes against Inter but could potentially be back in time for the visit of Bayern.

Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo set to make decision on surgery - report

FC Barcelona v Elche CF - LaLiga Santander

The defender has a thigh injury

Ronald Araujo is expected to make a decision on whether to undergo surgery on his thigh injury over the weekend

The center-back suffered the injury while on international duty with Uruguay and is set for some time on the sidelines, although it’s not clear yet how much time he will miss.

Early reports have suggested Araujo will be out for at least six weeks and could even need surgery on his injury which would rule him out of the World Cup.

Yet Mundo Deportivo reckon a decision had not yet been made. The player is due to meet club medics on Sunday to decide a treatment plan.

Araujo’s injury can be treated conservatively or with surgery. However, the club want to wait 48 hours for the inflammation to subside before making a definite plan.

The defender is expected to return more quickly if he opts for conservative treatment but there’s no guarantee that’s the best option.

Barcelona will still have to make do without the defender for some time which will be a real blow, particularly given the congested fixture schedule caused by the World Cup.

Xavi does have Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen and Gerard Pique available, while Jules Kounde is expected back in about a month after also picking up an injury this week.

The forward is a doubt

France boss Didier Deschamps has confirmed that Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele has a bit of niggle and could miss the team’s Nations League game against Denmark on Sunday.

Dembele has been recalled to the France squad and featured as a substitute in Les Bleus’ 2-0 win over Austria last week. The were reports after the game that Dembele was feeling discomfort when he came off.

Deschamps has now confirmed that Dembele isn’t completely 100% and it’s not been decided yet if he will feature against the Danes.

“He has calf discomfort. He will train separately, we’ll see how he feels today,” he said.

Barcelona will be hoping desperately that Dembele is not about to join what is a growing injury list at the Camp Nou.

The international break has not been kind to Barca, with Jules Kounde, Memphis Depay, Ronald Araujo, and Frenkie de Jong all having picked up injuries so far.
