Munir El Haddadi: Barcelona's next Sergi Roberto

With Barcelona in desperate need of a backup left-back for Jordi Alba, the club may need to find an unconventional solution - much like they found in Sergi Roberto at right-back.

Let's start with a simple fact: FC Barcelona's backup left fullback is bad. Regardless of who you deem to be the first backup, it's a bad choice. At the start of the season, it was Adriano who Luis Enrique called upon to fill in when Jordi Alba was recovering from a neck injury. After a few matches of seeing the effects of age first hand, Enrique quickly opted for Jeremy Mathieu to play as the first reserve left-back - despite having told the coach he no longer feels comfortable on the left flank. As Mathieu started taking more of the rotation minutes on the left flank, it became increasingly obvious that he was no longer comfortable in his former position - and the numbers speak for themselves.

With Adriano and Mathieu at left-back this season, Barcelona are outscoring opponents 11-8. With Alba at left-back, the team is outscoring opponents 29-7. While one should reasonably expect a drop in performance when the starter goes out, it's not reasonable to expect a 67% drop in production against teams like Levante and Deportivo La Coruna. Something has to change.

Fortunately, it appears something will change. Recent reports suggest that Barcelona will target Fiorentina left-back Marcos Alonso in the summer - when his contract runs out. Unfortunately, that leaves the club with five more months of a Mathieu/Adriano combination on the left flank. With an abysmal goal differential and the club having dropped the same number of points in about half the matches with those two covering the area, something has to change now - with an ability to be adjusted later.

One plan is simple: try to buy Marcos Alonso now. Instead of merely waiting six months to get him for free, offer Fiorentina a low price to get him now. At that point, Barcelona get their man when they need him and Fiorentina get money rather than nothing. There's a bit of a kink in that plan, though. Alonso currently starts for the Italian club, and they're doing quite well - sitting just a point off of first place in Serie A. It's possible they'd value a few million euros over the competition, but with some reports suggesting that the top two teams in Serie A win over €8.000.000 they may take their chances at getting the prize money over the transfer money.

With reports coming out that the club is strapped for cash and trying to avoid paying millions of euros in January, it seems unlikely that they would be willing to shell out nearly ten million euros for a player who would be free in July, that will spend roughly two thirds of the matches on the bench. So perhaps it's time to find a new solution - and I think I've found one.

The best solution is almost definitely going to have to come from within the club. Someone that knows the system, that won't add anything else to the already maxed out wage bill, and (best of all) someone that's free. That someone is going to have to be very attack minded to fill in for Jordi Alba. That someone will have to be able to pass well, be able to fill in space, and be willing to constantly be moving after the ball when possession is lost.

That someone is Munir El Haddadi.

The young Spanish forward has struggled in his time with Barcelona, with just three assists and zero goals in his last 20 appearances in La Liga and the Champions League. Through his struggles, he's become somewhat of a joke among the fans, ridiculed for his inability to score, and his tendencies to stay wide and out of play - but its those skills that have him primed to be a valuable player from a deeper position.

Munir provides width consistently throughout the front line, and is very good at occupying space to keep defenders at home. He links up with the team well, too. He's not one that provides flashy assists and through balls, but Munir consistently recycles possession back into the midfield or to one of the more creative forwards. Best of all, Munir tracks back incredibly well. This season, Munir has the second highest tackles+interceptions per 90 among forwards in La Liga at nearly 3 per match. To put his work in perspective, Jordi Alba currently averages 3.15 balls won per 90. That's not to say that Munir is already as good as Alba as a fullback, or even close to him. Instead, it merely suggests that Munir possesses the skills and mind set necessary to succeed as a fullback in Barcelona's system.

It's also worth noting that both of the current starting fullbacks for FC Barcelona were naturally wingers that didn't possess the ability in the final third to stick in the area, and got pushed back to act as wing-backs when injury necessitated. The player Barcelona just bought to replace Dani Alves has a similar story. Barcelona has a history of taking wingers that possess all the talents to play in a wide area but none of the skills required to be a winger in Barca's system and turning them into something special - and it's time we find out if Munir can do the same.

Leo Messi: 'It's been a spectacular year' | FC Barcelona
Leo Messi, who scored one of the goals and also played his 500th match in an FC Barcelona shirt, highlighted the difficulties against Betis: "It was a strange game, complicated. We found it tough to pick up the pace of the game, which is always hard after a few days of vacation. But we did the most important thing, which was to win tonight," Messi said.

Five titles, 180 goals - is there any stopping Barcelona in 2016? - Goal.com
Time will tell, of course. After all, Real Madrid finished 2014 with four trophies, a hatful of goals and a club record 22 victories in a row last December, only to fade after Christmas and miss out on all the major prizes at the end of last season. So Barca will be wary of counting its chickens just yet.

Why? Finances. Rules laid down in Barca's statutes mean that the club's net debt cannot be any higher than 2.5 times their EBITDA (net income plus interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) in 2015-16. With the ratio currently in the region of 2.41, that leaves little room to manoeuvre when it comes to transfer fees and salaries.

La Liga: FC Barcelona 4-0 Real Betis: Match Review

A recap of Barcelona's thumping 4-0 win against Real Betis at the Camp Nou.

Barcelona ended the year 2015 on a high with an emphatic 4-0 win against Real Betis. The first goal of the game might have been an own goal by Heiko Westermann, but Barcelona completely dominated their opponents and had it not been for the frame of the goal it could’ve ended much worse for Betis. Lionel Messi doubled Barcelona’s lead in the first half before Luis Suarez added a pair in the second half to set the final score.

With a grueling January schedule just around the corner, Luis Enrique started early with rotations, with only the attacking trident left untouched. In defense Thomas Vermaelen made a rare start in the heart of the defense, alongside of Javier Mascherano, while Jeremy Mathieu and Dani Alves opened the match as full-backs. In midfield Sergio Busquets and Ivan Rakitić were joined by Sergi Roberto.

The match started with a few minute delay as Barcelona presented all five trophies won in 2015 to the Camp Nou crowd, including the Club World Cup trophy won just 10 days ago. The celebrations were also well received from the visiting Real Betis who showed excellent sportsmanship by doing a guard of honor for arguably the best team of 2015.

Neither team looked sharp from the opening minutes. While Barcelona controlled the ball and looked the more dangerous team, the Catalans couldn't really set foot in Antonio Adan's penalty area for a good part of the first half. Betis made Barcelona's task even tougher by playing a very physical game, full of tough tackles.

Betis suffered a blow to their ranks in the 16th minute as their most used defender, Bruno González, was forced to come off after a tough clash with his own goalkeeper just minutes earlier. He was replaced by rarely used Germán Pezzella.

The first dangerous shot from Barcelona came in the 22nd minute when Messi whipped a 28-yard free kick a couple feet wide of Adan's goal. Betis quickly countered with an even better chance, after a terrible Alves turnover, but Dani Ceballos wasted too much time and gave Alves enough time to recover and clear the ball out of danger. From open play Barcelona didn't create anything noteworthy until the 25th minute when Luis Suarez beautifully found a wide open Neymar with a high cross, but the Brazilian's header was too weak and right into the hands of Adan.

The very next minute the referee Iñaki Vicandi Garrido pointed to the penalty spot after a brutal clash between Adan and Messi, even though Adan clearly got to the ball first, but Garrido might have reacted to how Messi's body whipped from the heavy contact. Messi had to be escorted off the pitch for a few moments after lying very still for a couple of minutes inside the Betis penalty area. Neymar took responsibility for the kick, but he slipped in the crucial moment and let his attempt sail into the crossbar. The ball bounced back into play where Rakitić and Westermann charged to the rebound. The German won the race, but his touch, under pressure from Rakitić, was poor and the ball ended up in his own net.

That opened up Betis a little bit and in the 33rd minute Barcelona were able to outplay the makeshift defensive line to double their lead. Neymar and Messi played a lovely one-two in-between a handful of defenders to get the Brazilian into a great position to take the shot, but he opted for the unselfish move to find Messi who sprinted in front of the goal for an easy tap in.

Betis were handed another blow three minutes later as Westermann, Betis' second center-back, was also forced to leave the pitch injured. The German was replaced by a defender used even less than the aforementioned Pezzella, by Didier Digard. Losing their two most reliable defenders made Betis no favors and Barcelona quickly tried to take advantage again. In the 38th minute, Suarez was played through by Messi and after the Uruguayan easily skipped past the keeper, he couldn't send the ball into the wide open net.

The second half started with a bang as not even a full minute in Barcelona were up 3-0. After a poor Mathieu pass stopped Barcelona's attack, Busquets did well to intercept an errant Alfred N'Diaye pass and the world's arguably most underrated star quickly played Suarez though alone on goal. This time Suarez didn't make the same mistake as he did in the first half, calmly slotting the ball out of the goalkeeper's reach to increase Barcelona's lead. Suarez's goal made Barcelona the highest scoring team in a calendar year with 179 goal, surpassing Real Madrid's record of 178 in 2014.

After scoring the third the tempo of play dropped, but that didn't mean Betis' defense had much more time to breathe - something Messi made sure off with several stunning long passes. And when Messi wasn't making those passes, Rakitić was making them with strikingly similar accuracy. Sadly for Barcelona fans though, none of the chances created from those passes wanted to go into the back of the net. Two of Barcelona's best chances of the second half came in the 61st minute just seconds apart. Rakitić played Neymar through, but all the completely unmarked Brazilian could do was hit the post. The play continued as the ball bounced back into play and Barcelona would get another chance but Messi shot was excellently stopped by Adan.

In the 67th minute Lucho made his second substitution, replacing Mathieu with Adriano Correia, almost exactly ten minutes after the first change which saw Busquets get some much deserved rest as he was replaced by Bartra.

Barcelona would go on to be denied on a bevy of golden scoring chances between the 69th and the 75th minute. First, Messi sent a brilliant free kick on target only to see the ball get tipped into the crossbar and out of play by a great save by Adan. Then Alves was left in the box with plenty of space to take a lovely chip shot, but he too was denied by the crossbar. Barça would have another chance off the rebound, but Suarez was unable to control the ball and the chance went begging.  Suarez would have a good look on goal the very next minute, but this time he was denied by yet another strong save by Adan. Lastly, Messi would give it another go from a free kick, this one in a better position for a left-footed specialist, and again he curled a fantastic shot, but again he was denied by the bar.

But all those missed chances would in the end not deny Barcelona another goal in 2015 - and what a goal it was. Neymar started the sequence 35 yards from goal with a simple pass to Suarez who forwarded it to the left wing to Adriano. Adriano sent the ball back to Suarez, who by now reached the penalty area and extended the play to Neymar in the middle. Wasting no time, Neymar sent a spinning back-heel back to Suarez who finished the play with a calm shot to the back of the net for what turned out to be Barcelona's last goal of 2015.

The Catalans will have no time to enjoy this win and their successes in 2015 as their next game will be played on 2 January - the first of three in less than two weeks against city rival Espanyol.

This Sergio Busquets assist shows how underrated he truly is

Luis Suarez has scored Barcelona's third goal against Real Betis in their La Liga clash. More impressive than the simple finish was the lovely throughball by Sergio Busquets to set it up.

Sergio is known for his stellar defensive work, but it's his passing that doesn't get enough credit.

Lionel Messi got destroyed by the Real Betis goalkeeper, recovered and scored a goal

Lionel Messi is a brave individual. A player of his small stature has to be to succeed at the highest level. This time it may have cost him. On his 500th appearance for the club, he attempted to challenge for a cross in the box and got cleaned out by the Real Betis goalkeeper.

The ref gave a penalty to Barca on the play. Neymar hit the bar, but the ball somehow got poked into the net. It was ruled as an own goal.

Messi was eventually okay to continue was then able to find the net for Barca's second goal of the match just minutes later.

His 425th goal in 500 appearances for the Argentine legend. What an unbelievable career for a truly remarkable player.

La Liga: FC Barcelona vs Real Betis: Predict the Score

A chance to predict the score of tonight's La Liga clash between FC Barcelona and newly-promoted Real Betis at the Camp Nou

All things being equal, FC Barcelona will likely enter tonight's match with Real Betis in need of a win to retain top spot headed into 2016, as both Real and Atletico Madrid face equally winnable matches at home to Real Sociedad and away to Rayo Vallecano respectively. A win for Real Madrid at 4pm CET will see them usurp their two fierce rivals to claim temporary control at the top of the table, before Atletico Madrid would have a chance to go on top themselves with just a single point against local rivals, Rayo.

Ergo, Barcelona could start tonight's match in third place; not that one should expect them to remain their for long once this match gets going. While Real Betis travel exceptionally well and boast one of the better away records in the division, they are goal-shy to say the least and against a side that can be so offensively explosive, they surely don't stand much of a chance of extending that record.

The only things that may go in their favour are the festive hangover, which we have seen impact a few of the top teams in England over the past few days, and a bit of complacency, which could rear it's ugly head at any given time or place.

Equally, it's worth pointing out that Neymar alone has scored more goals than Real Betis this season in La Liga. Luis Suarez has scored an equal amount; basically, it's really tough to envisage anything other than a home win. But how do you see tonight's match going? A Blaugrana victory to close out 2015? Or a shock to wrap up the year? Let us know by leaving your prediction in the comments section below. Best of luck!

La Liga: FC Barcelona vs Real Betis: Full Match Coverage

Full coverage of the Blaugrana's final match of 2015 against Real Betis

FC Barcelona will be looking to close out a memorable year in record-breaking style tomorrow, when they play host to Real Betis at the Camp Nou. For most Culés, 215 has been a year of euphoric highs, from securing La Liga at the Vicente Calderon, to vanquishing Athletic Club in the Copa del Rey final at the Camp Nou, securing the treble with a win over Juventus at the Olympiastadion in Berlin and of course, destroying Real Madrid 0-4 at the Santiago Bernabeu. This year has been full of great moments, and hopefully the players have one left in them tomorrow to cap it all off.

In addition to putting the icing on the 2015 cake, the Blaugrana need a win tomorrow to end the year on top of La Liga and keep their title bid on track. Thanks to a few poor results while Barcelona were in Japan, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid remain behind Luis Enrique’s team who also have a game in hand, but even with that in mind, Enrique will be keen to remain on top.

Complacency simply isn’t an option, and neither can we blame the recent trip to Far East Asia; irrespective of all that, Barcelona will be expected to claim all three points tomorrow against mid-table opposition. Historically, Real Betis have been one of the biggest sides from the region of Andalusia, but in recent years, they’ve struggled to live up to that billing. A brief stint in the Segunda Division was their reward for a dreadful campaign in 2013/14, and there have been signs that this season could be similarly frustrating for them.

For starters, they’ve struggled to score goals. Real Betis possess one of the worst offensive records in the entire division, and if you take star striker, Ruben Castro, out of the equation, they’d surely be in the relegation zone. Castro has notched eight of the team’s 13 goals, while other "big names" like Joaquin, Rafael van der Vaart and Ricky van Wolfswinkel have scored just once between the three of them.

In other words, they don’t really have the necessary firepower to realistically challenge the Blaugrana in Catalunya. At least they shouldn’t anyway; the question is whether they can limit Barcelona to a goal or two, and then steal a draw with an opportunistic strike.

Oh yeah, did I mention that this Barcelona side is just two goals away from equalling the world record for goals in a single calendar year? Or that they can win their 51st match of 2015 tomorrow?

Yeah… it’s going to be tough for Pepe Mel to stay positive ahead of this one.

BARCELONA

Well, we know that Alejandro Grimaldo won’t be in the squad tomorrow, but that isn’t a surprise anyway. Grimaldo has just signed for SL Benfica because of a lack of first team action, so that rules him out of tomorrow’s match. This is also the final match in which we won’t see Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal in contention, as they can officially be registered ahead of Barcelona’s next match this upcoming weekend. Aside from that, there’s really nothing to report.

So, the question is whether Luis Enrique will start the rotation ahead of a gruelling January schedule in which the Blaugrana will contest a minimum of seven matches, and probably more pending their progression in the Copa del Rey. My money is on "yes", with more rotation to follow when Arda and Vidal get the green light to play.

Claudio Bravo will continue in goal, obviously; ahead of him though, I anticipate that we’ll see some change. I think that Jeremy Mathieu or Adriano Correia may start ahead of Jordi Alba, if only because Real Betis lack any real pace down the flanks. And also to troll the Barcelona fans mad about Grimaldo’s departure. Mainly the last one.

In the heart of defense, expect to see Gerard Pique, fresh off his holidays in Japan and in Paris over the holiday period, and possibly Marc Bartra or Thomas Vermaelen alongside him in the backline. Dani Alves will complete the back four, having found some form from somewhere in recent appearances.

Sergio Busquets will start at pivote, while I suspect we will see Sergi Roberto and Andres Iniesta ahead of him in the two interior slots. Nothing against Ivan Rakitic, just that this is a good opportunity to give him some rest; he looked a little tired in the pictures from training today. Oh, and we’ll probably need him more against RCD Espanyol at the weekend.

In attack, you know what to expect; Lionel Messi making his 500th career appearance, with Neymar and Luis Suarez in support. I can’t wait, and I’m sure everyone else is feeling the same way.

REAL BETIS

Goal-shy Betis has scored just once in their past three La Liga matches; and it was Ruben Castro’s long-time strike partner, Jorge Molina who grabbed that equaliser against Celta Vigo. However, that was over 180 minutes of action ago; since then Betis have drawn blanks against both Las Palmas, and fierce rivals, Sevilla FC. Molina will miss the match tomorrow, although that’s about it from an injury perspective.

La Liga: FC Barcelona vs Real Betis: Match Preview

A preview of the Blaugrana's final match of 2015 against Real Betis

Official: Alex Grimaldo Signs For SL Benfica

*Cue criticism of the board in 3..2...1...*

It's all change at FC Barcelona B; following the announcement of a couple of new signings yesterday, the club announced a high-profile departure this morning, as club captain and Catalan full-back, Alejandro Grimaldo has officially put pen to paper on a four-year deal at SL Benfica. The Lisbon giants have paid €1.5 million to secure his services, while the Blaugrana will retain a share of the profits from any future sale. At present, the exact percentage has not been disclosed.

For years, Grimaldo has been tipped to make a breakthrough for the senior squad and establish himself as a starting full-back for his boyhood club, but due to a combination of injury and the signing of Jordi Alba, Grimaldo's path to the first team has been blocked, hence this decision to try his luck overseas. Naturally, most Barcelona fans are somewhat unhappy about the decision, using this as yet another opportunity to criticise the incumbent board. That being said, it's difficult to see how they could have handled this any differently.

Jordi Alba is clearly our starting left-back, and a player of Grimaldo's talent and age needs regular game time to progress and improve. He was never going to get that here, and it makes perfect sense for him to move to Portugal, where he can start to move forward with his career at one of Portugal's best sides, not to mention a perennial UEFA Champions League participant.

The door is always open for a return, and don't be surprised if a few years down the line, we see Alejandro back where he belongs -- in a Blaugrana jersey.
